Edit- Mechtroid posted a nice little counter arguement I quite like- read it here- http://www.facepunch.com/showpost.php?p=23070078&postcount=111
Well, I didn't think I'd need to do this, but, whatever, people can't tell satire. This is a joke. If you can tell me why maps should be allowed to all, but not community weapons, I will eat my own arse. And I'll provide pictures too.

So, I found this really great idea from the steam forums, and I thought it was so good I'd let you guys see it for yourselves.
So here's how the idea runs- let's say Valve, in the engineer update, offers 5 new maps. However, you can only play them if you have the relevant map token in your backpack, else you're not allowed to play, rather than just letting everyone play with them all. Why? Well, I'll explain a bit further on, but first, the tokens.
So how do you get these tokens? Simple- like you do regular weapon drops. Of course, if that's too slow, there are crafting recipies for all 5 using combinations of 2 of the other tokens, so you don't have to wait forever until you get to play the map.
So why would Valve do this? I see several good points here-
1) You're not overloaded with new maps. Imagine logging on and having to pick between 5 maps- new players would quit the game, and old players, well, 5 maps, that's a lot of choice. This way, you're slowly introduced to each one.
2) You might not even like the maps. You may love PL_Rocky, but hate CP_Garage. Because Valve can't tell who would like what, it's fair for everyone, and besides, no-one really needs all the new maps, do they? Some might be imbalanced, so why would you ever want to play them?
3) It adds much needed excitement to the game. If you could just play with all the maps, you'd get bored. Imagine the thrill when you find a CTF_Doubledash token? If you were just given them, it'd be no fun.
It sounds a great system to me, and I know I for one would support it!

I challenge anyone who believes we shouldn't just be given all the weapons but still thinks this is a dumb idea. I'mma talkin' to you box lovers!
That's feels like grindtastic unlocking popular characters for a party game. I'd like to choose between all new maps right away, please.
Playing maps only if you have a token for it? No thank you.
um... yeah im not going to agree with this as that rule of "have the token to play the map" doesn't sound very good to me.
That's feels like grindtastic unlocking popular characters for a party game. I'd like to choose between all new maps right away, please.
That's the beauty- you can't grind, beacuse it's all randomly done- all you have to do is play the game and they'll drop!
I don't think this'd work. It would cause more unnecessary elitism and would probably be difficult to implement. Plus, there is already plenty of excitement in the game; not allowing people to play certain maps unless they had permission, basically, would not add to it.
This is ridiculous, people would be unable to play if a server switched to the map.
Or worse, kicked. That's just silly.
You should not be excluded from gameplay just for not having an item.

But the TF2 team do it for community weapons? Why shouldn't we for maps? I mean, they're both content.

There was this one time I could have mini-critted a bunch of enemies as a scout once, but I hadn't got a crit-a-cola.
Another time as pyro I had to watch as a sentry was sapped to death as I had no homewrecker.
Isn't that excluding me from gameplay?
This sounds like an awful idea. I don't want to wait a couple weeks to play the new maps from an update. I want to play them right away.
So, idle for maps? Genius!
Because you're not kicked from a server because you don't have a weapon. Weapons and maps are content, but one is used by everyone at once and one is used by individuals.

Weapons are a different thing, but being kicked just because I don't have a map token? That's just dumb.

Because you can still play the game without having an unlockable weapon. Not so if you can't load a map.
I'm going to give you a box now.

Weapons are content. You want to use a weapon, you use it, but nope, you don't have it.
Maps are content. You want to play a map, but nope, you can't use it because you haven't got a token.

But you're not DISALLOWED GAME TIME because you don't have a weapon, are you?

Play another map.
Use another weapon.
Simple as.
Play another map.

But all your friends are on this server.
Bad idea. Ok sure I may hate CP_garage. So? I just don't play it. If the server changes map to it? I quit. Go join a different server. But then I might think "Ehh...CP_garage isn't to bad... Lets play it again." But with the token system, I might have crafted it or thrown it away. So basically its useless.
But the TF2 team do it for community weapons? Why shouldn't we for maps? I mean, they're both content.
Even if you don't have a weapon, you can still play. If you don't have a map, you'd be excluded entirely. Basically there's two options if a server switches maps. The person is permaspectate for that map, which would be boring and unfun, or they are kicked, which is frustrating and frankly bad design.
You're using reductio ad absurdium to make a point here. That does not make you smart. Taking an idea and running with it to ridiculous lengths can be done with anything, it does not prove anything.
Play another map.

I think you're trolling.
This is the dumbest idea I've ever seen. Restraining people to play certain maps AT RANDOM. You'll have people getting kicked for not having a certain OFFICIAL map ? Wow nice.
This is a pretty terrible idea.
Oh wow you got this from the steam forums. No surprise there.
But all your friends are on this server.
But what if your friend is an engineer and needs his sentry unsapped, and you're a homewreckerless pyro?
Works that way too.
As a custom mapper, all I have to say is

You're still allowed to play with him though.
Are you basically trying to get map packs in the game. This is almost as as forcing people to buy them.

Oh god, 5 MAPS? THAT'S SO MANY FUCKING CHOICES! OH GOD WHICH ONE DO I PICK? HOLY SHIIIIITTTT MY BRAIN IS OVERLOADED I'M JUST GOING TO STOP PLAYING
