Hey, so I posted a joke Steam thread in the Stuff That Annoys You in TF2 thread. The general gist of the joke:
Being a real pro, you know that the only way this game should be played is how it was when it first came out. Every change Valve has made since then has done nothing but hurt the game.
Despite the laughs, people thought it would be interesting to just play stock-only. I know that idea has probably been floating around since the first weapon was added to TF2, but I don't see any running, and I think I could run it.
But before I do so, I want to know if people actually want a server like this. I feel like people are saying stock-only sounds awesome, but wouldn't actually play it. It would be more of a novelty you play once or twice and forget about.
Regardless, I want to know what you guys think of this.
I'd play stock or no stock, just to have a server without all the bullshit that big name server owners run.

Actually the more I think about this the better it sounds, would you have a classic map setup or would it be all the maps added in the game so far? Just curious as to how far "stock-only" applies.
I wasn't thinking of getting rid of cosmetics and I'm cool with whatever map set up - I was really only thinking stock weapons. But that can change too based on the responses I get here.

Alright, default map cycle + stock weapons only. Connect through Steam!
Uhh, I followed that link and it brought me to some random trade server. Empty one, too.
I wouldn't really count on it getting populated. All the servers I've seen run stock only have always been empty almost 24/7.

Yup, I'm just trying to figure out something to do with this server. I've tried a Custom Map server, didn't get anywhere with it. Tried a Stock server, and it got populated once, but died out as I expected. Tried a trade server, and people joined (hit 5 once), and then it seems it died out again.
My original plan was to host awesome custom maps or go all-stock but I have no idea how to attract players. And I don't want to revert to being annoying or stupid with advertising it so I'm not sure what to do with it.
Make a steam group
get a plugin that turns on all stock or custom maps only after x Players are on so you get quickplay
invite friends
give up and go back to crying about your failed dreams

Your best bet is to try and associate it with a community as an unofficial server. I've admined a few servers that do that and have gotten fair userbases. Maybe occasionally hold events on there, that aren't necessarily 24/7 events. Maybe custom map nights, stock unlocks only, and whatnot. But running it 24/7 gets old and isn't desirable because without an allocated time, not enough people will usually be on, and it's going to be stagnant. Designating times for such things generally seems to attract more of a base crowd. Tell friends in advance too, and do some impromptu invites when it comes around. Once you get around 10 or so people, the rest start coming in themselves.
I always felt like it would be really, really lame to try and play off of a community like Facepunch and be an accurate representation - mainly because I'd be doing it without permission. I'd love to do a Facepunch server, but I think that I morally shouldn't.
FP has members from EU, NA and other continents. There couldn't really be a Facepunch server that everyone could play on together without it being Lagfest14.

That's why I said a community, and not Facepunch specifically.

Also turns into a mic spamming shitfest in a real fucking hurry.
But that's *fun*
