Stay a while and listen, forum-goers, as I weave a tale of theory and possibilities! Upon this day I still consider what could have happened to effect the outcome of this WAR betwixt the doomed friendship of the demoman and the soldier. Then in a sudden burst of inspiration, I thought to myself..."maybe it ISN'T doomed!"
Consider this, my friends. The WAR Update was to destroy the friendship between these two battle hardened veterans of their time. And to the victor goes the spoils of war. In this case, the spoils were the fabled "Gunboat" boots.
But think. The update is over, right? Yet still the background is of the WAR update still. Why do you ask? Doesn't that mean that it'll change after ANOTHER update perhaps? My thoughts exactly. Thus...I believe in a Christmas time update. During this time, to make-up after what had happened during this horrid travesty of death and wanton destruction, the Soldier will valiantly "man up" and grab a pair of gunboats and give them to the demoman as a gift to rekindle their lost friendship. All during a christmas update!
This, alas, is just the speculations of a senile old fool, who believes too much in the good of mankind...
but for those of you who will listen, heed my words.
There shall be a christmas update, and there shall be amends to be made.
and there will be gifts perhaps?

tl;dr - christmas update to make up friendship and give demo gunboats, possible gift hat or something, more christmas shenanigans, and a partridge in a pair tree

The stuff with Drew Wolf made me think there may be an update before Christmas, though. I remember someone posted if you switch the 1st letter of his first and last names, it switches to Wrew Dolf, which could be pronounced Rudolph, and he had a [b]red[/b] M&M up his [b]nose.[/b]
I hope the demos don't get anything.

Glad to know people like you won't be here past the free weekend.
One can only hope the friendship is repaired, but I honestly would not mind not getting the boots. It would take out the pipe bomb launcher, and that would multiply the sticky spam. The Targe, at least, forces players to learn to not suck with the pipes or be kamikaze with the bottle/sword.
I just hope that if this happens, the Demo's weapon wouldn't also be Gunboats. They are secondary slot, so they'd replace stickies, stopping you from sticky-jumping, and rendering them useless. If the boots were a primary slot and replaced the nade launcher, then Eyelander/Targe Demos would have no real weapon.
My opinion is that the Demo weapon had something to do with the unused sticky bomb models in the GCF.
Actually, it would be nice if they released one weapon for each class. The video with the leaked beta weapons has Spy (flame retardant suit that has an icon in the GCF), Engie (PDQ), Heavy (gloves of urgent running), and medic (overhealer that is well balanced) weapons, and with the Gunboats, that's only three classes for which weapons would need to be made.
TL;DR - If anything, the demo weapon is another sticky bomb launcher because unused sticky bomb models were found in the GCF. Hopefully a Christmas update would bring one weapon to each class, and then six classes already have another weapon, so 3 are needed.
Christmas is a time for giving, so the trade system would be a good idea.
But, because it's about giving and not receiving, maybe it'll be a gift only system up until Christmas/after Christmas, so you can't trade but you can give people shit.
