Call for submissions has officially ended! Thank you so much to everyone who entered and best of luck with your entries! You guys will have this weekend to vote, and then we will announce the winner on or before Tuesday 6/24. Hey guys! Maxxy and I have decided to re-visit the Fem Sniper model and fix a few things. So while were at it, we figured we might as well add a new outfit for her in the alternate bodygroups. Since you guys as the community have been so passionately voicing your opinions about her clothes, guess what? YOU ARE GOING TO DESIGN HER ALTERNATE OUTFIT! Post your entries in this thread between 5/5 and 6/20 PST. Any entries posted before or after will be disqualified. And remember to follow the rules! Also, once the nominees are chosen, here is the criteria for which the designs will be judged by: Appeal- How well does the design fit in the TF2 universe? Does the design suit the character? Functionality- Can the design be modeled in 3D? Will it work with the character’s rig and animations? Creativity- Is the design unique? Feel free to post questions before-hand! For those of you doing paint-overs, here is a folder with model sheets and reference. I also included a photoshop file.
can we give her a less triangle head too
can we give her a less triangle head too
Me and Maxxy are updating the model, including geometry fixes. I'm pretty much re-doing her entire head, since I now know a lot more about face topology than I did a year ago. So yeah, her face is going to look a lot better (hopefully lol). Maxxy is also going to work out a lot of technical issues. You can follow the progress of the updated model here. I'll be posting WIP shots shortly.
How about the voice update ? Also: why w/o jacket model using the old ver of femSniper model ?
How about the voice update ?
Yeah, sorry for the delay on that. DX I have a couple of sets of lines to go through, then Izzy will have to redo a couple once I have the final list, and then we should be good. It should be released long before the contest even starts though.
Isn't waiting until June a bit long? Whatever, my idea is pretty unoriginal anyways.
Isn't waiting until June a bit long?
I figured a lot of people are in school, and with finals coming up I wanted to make sure they had plenty of time to work on their entries.
Cover your midriff, you unwedable lady of the night.
I know hit boxes are a big deal, but if she is going to be recognized as an actual "she" from far away in-game, she needs to have a female silhouette. I wish we had the time and resources to actually give her a unique skeleton, animations, and hit boxes, but the only way that will happen is if by some weird (and mean REALLY WEIRD) circumstance Valve wants an update with lady characters. Then someone might go to the trouble of doing all that, and if that did somehow happen, I would hope Valve would take charge of that project and not leave it to the community. But that is very unlikely to happen. So for now, this is just for fun.
Cover your midriff, you unwedable lady of the night.
Hehehe you know, she's the type that would rather bare her midriff than be married to some ass-hat.
-snip-
why do you honestly think anyone would want to make free concept art for you just because you made it a "contest?"
Hehehe you know, she's the type that would rather bare her midriff than be married to some ass-hat.
I, too, think her midriff should be covered. If her personality is anything like that of her sociopathic, piss-throwing, obscenities-mumbling male counterpart, she's probably not all that concerned about sex appeal. It bothers me that 'young, skinny and scantily dressed' is an almost omnipresent default for female character design.

I don't think sex appeal would be what she was going for. More like, "It's hot up in this sniper tower". But that is just how I look at it.

Think of Alyxs leather/hoodie layering. With the curves of the jumper, it gives just enough of this 'Sex Appeal' you guys talk about and still be practical.
just enough of this 'Sex Appeal' you guys talk about
Just enough for what? The Spy and the Scout are sluts, so I think feminized versions of those classes could show some skin and get away with it, but with the Sniper is not an homme fatale. He's a bloke who shoots people.
why do you honestly think anyone would want to make free concept art for you just because you made it a "contest?"
You can just you know not participate

But then I realize how much fun this project has been and that makes up for it. Like the model, this contest is purely for fun.
I, too, think her midriff should be covered.
Maxxy and I have decided to re-visit the Fem Sniper model and fix a few things.
Have you fixed the Soldered Sensei having missing textures yet?
Have you fixed the Soldered Sensei having missing textures yet?
As far as I know, no. That would be on Maxxy's end I think. If you have questions regarding the model itself, it would be best to ask in this thread. This thread is more for questions about the contest.

When people create designs in the emporium, it's not uncommon for other to voice criticisms on these designs. The creators may then accept the criticism as valid and redesign accordingly, or dismiss the criticism as invalid. I have an opinion about one aspect of the design, which is an opinion simple enough to be expressed as well in words as it would through a paintover. You may find the opinion valid or invalid, and your opinion probably doesn't change depending on which medium I use. I have no desire to compete with the many superior design talents on facepunch for a co-contributor credit. I'm sorry if I'm coming across as negative. The model is overall amazing, the contest is a creative idea and I hope to see some nice designs come out of it. I just find the 'well if you don't like it then do it better yourself' attitude a tad uncalled for.
Honestly, I dont see what the fuss is over her exposed midriff. I think it looks fantastic and her current overall design and outfit to me speaks of a 'Jungle / Safari Professional Hunter-turned-Mercenary'. She looks adequately feminine whilst still being practical with the utilities and pouches, pockets and whatnot that someone equipped for combat or hunting would require. Its hot, so she has her shirt bundled up and knotted in the front. Thats not uncommon and it is a nice visual touch. She doesnt have over-sized breasts. She isnt wearing "impractical" bikini plate mail or lingerie. She isnt scantily clad or a "top-model contestant" so I really dont see why people are bitching like its a feminism rally. Feminism is about equality between the genders, not about Females being "better" than Males and thus stamping males down for all the wrongs of the past. I really dont like it when people come in here white-knighting about something that is totally irrelevant and blowing things way out of proportion. Besides, this is a contest. For free. For fun. To expand, conceptualize and promote ideas pertaining to an alternative outlook or design for the female Sniper. If you dont like the way she looks currently, that is the whole point of the contest - Design something you DO like or support other people that create a design you agree with. There is a difference between constructive feedback on material that has been produced / conceptualized / an idea and outright disapproving of something simply because you dont like it without any logical reasoning to fall back on. As Wolf said, you can just not participate and ignore this contest in its entirety. Nobody is forcing you to be here to voice your opinion or do something.
Are we allowed to have multiple concepts/entries or are we confined to one?
Can somebody post some reference images i'm intrigued to draw one butnot too keen on downloading it to take the images, no offense
Also, if it wasn't for the exposed belly, we might not have had this.

This thread is not intended as a discussion about what's right and what's wrong about Makani's design for Fem Sniper. It's a contest to create an alternate outfit. As for my attitude, it's reasonable. If I'm going to listen to feedback from someone, I want to make sure they know what they're talking about. That's why I am willing to take the time to model someone else's design if it get's past the community votes. Sure, I may not like what the community picks, but if it's something that the community likes, then hey, maybe I'm wrong. That's also why there's going to be six other people judging the final nominees, some of who's opinions are sometimes opposite from mine. The whole point of this model was to have another female TF2 character for people to use in-game and in Source Filmmaker. So of course I want to make something that the community likes. That's why I wanted to involve you guys. So if you're up for it, take the challenge and go for it! Again, it can be a paint over or even a photoshop mash-up if art is not your thing. It just has to be clear enough for me to use as reference while modeling. [editline]20th April 2014[/editline]
Are we allowed to have multiple concepts/entries or are we confined to one?
Nope! Make as many as you want! This contest kind of functions like the Saxxy awards, so multiple entries are fine. [editline]20th April 2014[/editline]
Can somebody post some reference images i'm intrigued to draw one butnot too keen on downloading it to take the images, no offense
No problem. I'll post up a model sheet shortly. :)
Why can't we start entering now? Isn't June a long way to wait ?

It's clearly a for fun project to make a contribution to the community for free. He isn't leeching off of someone's hard work and profiting off of it, he's letting people help him and participate in a contest for fun. So I really don't get why you think this is so wrong???
