Hello, my name is Donkonio and i have a problem with my tf2. It didn't just happen recently its been an ongoing problem. Ive searched all over the internet trying to find the answer to my problem, and I've found others with the same problem but none of them have been fixed.
So i decided to take the problem into my own hands and figure this out. Ok it all starts off when i watched a stream. Certain streamers like xts rando, or ggglygy's streams are extremely smooth and it mind boggles me why i cant get gameplay like that. Twitch.tv streams are only at 60 fps and the streamers get 150-200fps and so do i.
It cant be my monitor because I'm watching their stream on my monitor and it looks amazing. To go into more detail with the problem, its when i turn, aim, and move it just looks choppy and jerky. Im wondering if something messed up with my tf2 files. It could also be my mouse because when i turn thats the problem it feels like I'm on a grid when i play and completely un fluent.
Sorry for the long explanation, thanks for reading.
turn off vertical sync, lower graphical settings, run virus scan with something like malwarebytes, dont run it with lots of other programs open
now welcome to facepunch but we generally dont post new threads for small questions, please use the general chat or any proper thread
Stop playing on a potato
In seriousness you're probably playing on a lower-end computer which can't handle games very well, seeing how TF2 isn't that much of a GPU intensive game. Either invest in a more expensive and powerful computer or play on lowest settings and use Chris' TF2 config for an experience I'm assuming most potatoes can handle. It'll look like shit but you'll probably get 60+ FPS.
Welcome to Facepunch but don't post a brand new thread for stuff like this.

Didn't realize he said he gets high FPS. Probably your monitor then, though I don't know much about those. Or reinstall TF2 from scratch or verify game files.
I'm guessing, based on what you described (and how you said watching streams looks far smoother than being in-game), that the streams you watch have enormous amounts of motion blur and as such look far smoother than actual TF2. A similar effect can be obtained by watching a 60fps webm of a game, it will look incredibly smooth, due to the motion blur.
I'd recommend getting a 120hz monitor.
To anyone saying for him to turn down his graphic options, he stated in the OP he gets 150-200 FPS.
Oops, I meant 120hz monitor.
snip, late
Thanks for all the help guys, I hope i can fix it.
Sorry for starting a new post im new and unaware of the rules.
If anyone else has input, that would be greatly appreciated.
Most people can get noticeably better FPS by switching to directx 8.1 (Put "-dxlevel 81" in your launch options). If it still runs poorly, You can try Chris's Maxframes config
if everything fails, sorry man but its probably new computer time

I don't think he needs better FPS if he's running at 150-200.
I have a good computer, i get good framerate it just doesnt feel smooth. People say that twitch just has alot of motion blur so i dont think you can actually get gameplay like that. Unless theres a way to increase motion blur with a mod or something.

If it doesn't feel smooth make sure your ping is good, vertical sync is off, and motion blur is off
But if i turn v-sync off i get screen tearing like mad and it feels even less smooth. :/ but i heard windowless bordered mode helps stop screen tearing
Ive heard of a website called blurbusters which has a list of 120hz+ monitors that have a program thats downloadable that helps make stuff feel mire smooth.
note: im useing a 60hz monitor
This just started happening to me. I'm getting way more than 60 fps (like, closer to my fps limit of ~150) and my game looks like it's doing less than 60. I don't have VSync on either.
Add this to your autoexec.cfg:
"fps_max 121"
If your framerate is above that 90% of the time, it should stop feeling jittery, because every frame that appears on your screen appears in an expected interval.
Also, I'm picking this number as it's the best workaround to have a fake vSync. Shouldn't stop vertical tearing as much as vSync does, but the input lag and performance hit that comes with vSync shouldn't be there. You are free to pick any other number than 121, but higher numbers might not bring the result you want and lower ones will cause tearing and laggy behaviour.
PS. Don't compare your game to streamers' games. Their streaming software crunches down the frames and makes it appear smooth.
PPS. If other streams do appear smooth at 60FPS, it's not your monitor.
Can you post what hardware you are using?
Also, is this only for TF2 / source games or do other games also stutter?
Then, you should first figure out if it's a lag or stuttering. Lags are caused by internet connection problems, stuttering by PC problems.

This rather sounds like it's your pc. Still, enable the net graph (in console: net_graph 3 for testing purposes) and post a screenshot quickly after a lag/stuttering. If it doesn't look even, it will probably something with your connection or the servers your play on. But also pc problems can cause the graph to differ (like a freeze which causes gaps in the graph).
Try to explain exactly how it feels and how often it appears (regurlarly or random). This could be anything.
My first idea could be you anti virus software. Which antivirus software are you using? Add this folder to the exceptions of the real time scanner: \Steam\appcache\stats\
Source games keep updating a certain file in there very frequent while playing and antivirs softwares like to test it after every change which causes a performance loss. (I'm not even sure if this is still up to date, but you can still try it.)
Also, do you use WLAN? Some time ago I read that Windows searches for new available WLANs like every second. If it's possible, use a cable and deactivate WLAN.
That's all I know so far, try to answer my questions, I'm sure this will help us more.
For me this similar problem was caused by a wireless mouse.
They're probably not asked often enough to warrant one, but I feel like a TF2 Technical Problems thread would be useful. If only so we don't have to redirect people as much.
