I'm a collector of them and I think they're nice ways to stand out in a crowd. Other day I was in a server and as I was playing I saw a few heavies on my team, one wearing the Toque, one wearing the Gibus, another with the Rag and finally a... wait, a hatless heavy?
Standing before me was a heavy without a hat. I actually stopped to look at him, it almost looked -wrong- that he didn't have a hat on. As I played I noticed he was doing fairly well but Medics wouldn't latch onto him and most of the time left him alone even when he called for help, later revealing that it's because he didn't have a hat on.
After I spent the rest of the round being a medic for him I took a break. A few hours later I joined another game, and soon started hopping server to server for kicks till I found another hatless heavy. Similar situation of several heavies with various hats. I was a medic. I don't know what it is but I just couldn't seem to bring myself to uber him, and instead chose to uber those with headgear thinking that they were more skilled despite only having a cosmetic item on.
After thinking about everything for awhile I just started to wonder if hats were really a great idea after all. I'll still collect and keep getting more but was just wanting to grab some opinions is all
Yes.
Also, if you're playing with medics who don't heal someone on account of them not having a hat, you're playing with morons and should probably find a better server to frequent
yes but only the regular drop hats everything else should fuck off
I think it has brought more bad than good, it's just promoting elitism.
Well if the hats worked like callsigns of MW2, it would have been very different.
Hats will also bring laughter when somebody finds/crafts a good/bad hat, but it would also mean less bashing on the gibuses, halos, earbuds, etc, so it's hard to decide. I'll say yes to hats just so I can use my awesome hat skins.
Wow, I would feel awful in your situation, glad you decided to help the guy out.
But really there's no reason for hats not to be in the game.
Hat prejudice is an important skill for any medic, however keep in mind that all class hats make you less valuable than hatless.
I like it when I see someone with literally no hat on. It makes me feel that there are still people out there willing to not wear that fucking gibus despite not having any other hat.

Or, you know, they like the way that the characters look without any cosmetic items.
That can fall under my description as well.

That's a big goddamn checkmark.
Well I like the Gibus on one class and one class only (Pyro), that's why I plan on replacing the OTHER classes' Gibus with skins.

Cosmetic items that change people's opinions on other's skill
Now I've seen it all
I've not been healed before as soldier because I use the default rocket over the direct hit. Apparently because I don't use it I haven't unlocked it and that makes me a noob.
I just wear my Mercenary (since 'buds just cause rage) and play the game, it's not like I see it much anyways. I've got the Gibus and the Halloween hat, that's enough for me. Guess what I'm wearing come October?

I hope to God that they will allow it to work.
By now I barely notice, to be honest with you. All the headgear merges into one.
I admit, if I'm killed by a player with a gibus (bronze medal for extra points) I always think scrub, or "HERP DERP" for pyros (++ for backburner usage). It's terrible thinking, but I'm obviously not so retarded I don't help a teammate wearing one. I just think they're a scrub.
I quite enjoy my Texas Slim's Dome Shine. :clint:
Hats are funny and look stylish. "hat elitist" idiots are no fault of Valve's. Although the Halo and Gibus do look like shit.
Wearing the gibus means you want a hat but do not have one.
to be honest, I think many of the hats make the classes look worse
and the only real purpose hats serve is to be a gimmick to get people to play more
Edit:
actually looking over the hats again, it's only the community hats I don't like
in fact I'll say the only community hat I do like is the Frenchman's Beret
Why did this need a discussion? They're cosmetic items that do not affect gameplay, ignore them, if there's a heavy who needs a medic, heal him, dumbass!
As hypocritical as it may seem, I think the game would had been better off without hats.
They're unnecessary and distract from the real purpose of the game.
A lot of people are more obsessed with getting new hats than they are with playing the game, and some people even think of them as status symbols and therefor they affect the gameplay in a negative manner for the people who does no posses any randomly dropped hats.
I personally don't think a lot about whether my teammates have hats or not though.
I don't bother looking much at my teammates hats aside from when me and people are slacking off... like during set-up time or like when me and someone else is messing around while waiting for enemies as we defend.
On enemies, I think of hats as markers.
When I see a hat on an enemy, I remember that enemy.
When my enemy makes themselves recognizable to me, they open up the ability for me to distinguish their playstyle from their teammates, and for me to be able to predict them easier in battle.
Hats give you something to work towards. If there were no hats, the craft system would become dusty until Valve added new weapons or community weapons. IMO the game would gradually get more stale without these hats. I anticipate the moment where I get a new item and becoming one step closer to crafting a hat.
I myself have the Tough Guys Toque and a medic always latches on to me because I'm the easiest one to spot amidst the combat.

I crafted myself a heavy hat not too long ago, now I see medics latching onto me. Sometimes even fight over me a little. Sorta annoying having two medics on you and that other heavy on 50 health is being ignored.
When they were introduced, I hated the concept of hats, especially since they were only random drops before the implementation of the craft system. I recently crafted my way to my first hat, the professional's panama, which I promptly crafted with my camera beard (from the time when they had normal drop rate) and got a fancy fedora. Now, I am perfectly content, even if I never get another hat. Even when I'm not playing spy, I feel like I'm now Part Of The Community. It makes me feel unique, and is a welcome bonus for my 240 hours of playtime over the last two years.
If I'm being overhealed by a medic and there's a scout or something that's on fire right next to me that he's not healing I always yell at my medic to "HEAL THE DAMN SCOUT JESUS".
v:v:v
It's so frustrating when I'm in that Scout's shoes and not even my Noble Amassment of Hats can get him to heal me.
I don't heal teammates based on fashion, I heal based on score. I look on the scoreboard to see who is doing well, and I happily uber them when they are near. Of course, burning teammates do come beforehand though..
EDIT:
I seem to save more lives as pyro and Sniper with my extinguishing skills, rather than medic...
I have the Firefighter Helmet.
I just heal whoever isn't being retarded
