My friend gave me a guest pass to TF2 because I'm not getting it until tomorrow and I'm wondering how does the Drop System work? Does it put an item at random on the map or what?
At random intervels you get some pecent chance to roll some 9951517236 sided die and if you roll a 1 2 or 3 you get a hat and other numbers are weapons and nothing

As far as I understand it, when you die, there is a random percent chance you will find a weapon (or hat if you're lucky). You get this chance a certain number of times each week, and once you hit that number of weapons/hats found, you can find nothing else until the drop cap is reset sometime in the middle of the week. If you play semi-often, you have a higher chance of getting a drop than if you play five-hour-long sessions.

Does it put it on the ground or what is what I'm asking.
An item is added directly into your backpack at random intervals during gameplay. There's some more details I don't feel the need to go into, but it's not what you stated in the OP.

When you die, on occasion a screen will pop up with an image of the weapon and it'll ask if you want to keep or discard it. I'd advise keeping it. That's how you know you've found one.

OK Thanks. If a mod would lock this now.

Keep all items you find. Trust me, crafting will be amazingly helpful to you, especially considering it's simplicity.

You die, and you get hats and weapons, so easy. :smug:

What he said.
The game used to roll a dice and if successful you'd get an item and you'd have to wait until the next random roll to see if you got a new item. Unfortunately, people were getting streaks of no items for weeks on end, and others were getting 1-2 hats a week. Now they roll the dice for how long it takes for your next item drop, so you're always guaranteed an item at least once every few hours. They also integrated a system where the amount of drops you got per week was limited, so that idlers wouldn't have an advantage over regular players.
All you need to know is, you'll get a few items at semi-regular intervals and the drop-limit resets every Thursday.
-snip-
and what if you on purpose die alot?
Then you have a screwed over KDR. All dying does is collect the item. Dying more just makes it so you collect it sooner after the roll.
I hate the new drop system, its too restrictive. I only got 5 items last week and hit my limit!
Magic, probably.
If you want more items, stop playing so frequently. I went on vacation for a week, and came back to find about 15 items throughout the next week.
Works by magic of the gods, aka valve.
