Hello everybody! I've been a long time fan of TF2 and, having played for six years, I'm nowhere near being bored of the game. Something that I've personally had a lot of fun with in TF2 has been playing competitively. Whether I'm playing 6s or Highlander I really enjoy the challenge of bettering myself and pushing my self to be the best I can be. I just want to get the perspective of people on facepunch about the competitive scene. I know a lot of people dislike it and even more feel nothing towards it, but I'd like to open up a discussion here about how ya'll feel about it. Listed below are some questions to spark discussion. Have you even heard of competitive? Do you prefer 6's or Highlander? Why? Have you ever played TF2Centers? If you dislike competitive TF2, why? If you are interested in learning more about it or trying it out you can visit: comp.tf or teamfortress.tv. Both are awesome sites. You could also add me on steam if you have questions: steamcommunity.com/id/brontfosh Any responses are really appreciated. I feel very passionately about the competitive game and I always love to hear peoples' differing perspectives.
I'm fine with competitive as an activity, almost everyone i've met that has played competitively however is generally a lime and pink painting gold weapon equipping trashbinding low life waste of human resources that spends their entire life dedicating to killing you when you accidentially dominate them

Also, thanks for posting!

I'm trying to get into competitive scene but first I need to overcome my fear of being trashed talked in TF2center and I need to train my English so I can speak more normally and comfortable. If I got into competitive I would go more towards 6v6 and Highlander since those are my two favorite formats.

I mean, Ultiduo and 4vs4 is second league :p (even though I find them more enjoyable).

It's a great way to learn more about the competitive formats while not having to be incredibly serious.
The format(s) are fun and a different way to play the game that work well, I've never really felt like getting into it beyond playing some TF2Center and pick-up style games here and there though. Playing roamer is a big bag of fun :v: The stereotype of all comp players being trashtalking and elitist shitlords is annoying and wrong as well. I mostly enjoy watching it to be honest. It's a pretty fun spectator "esport" imo.
I've always enjoyed competitive TF2, most of the people I've met have been good people and the time I spent in it has some of the best TF2 moments I've ever had. It's not really for everyone, but it's really worth checking out if you're interested. Really fun to play. [editline]9th July 2014[/editline] Just try and break away from the stereotype that all competitive players are cancerous gits because, from my presonal experience, it's far from true. Most of the guys you find in pubs who are assholes about competitive are circlejerkers part of their own disgusting team of fellow outcasts that nobody wants on their team because they're so insufferable. A majority of the players are nice and the community is welcoming, don't let a game of TF2center or lobby fool you from that because they hardly represent the community.
those exist anywhere. not exclusive to comp. if you associate them with comp then it's your own fault.
Not every shitter plays comp. However, every comper i've met is a shitter.
Not every shitter plays comp. Most of the people I've met playing competitive have been pretty nice and aren't super insufferable or anything and the top-tier players are all really chill. The ones you're mentioning are probably the massive loudmouthed idiots who brag they're sniper on some low level steel team. Also, you've most likely played with quiet, non-idiotic competitive players. It's like basing your opinion on every brony on that one guy who draws rainbow dash muscle vore and ERPs over the mic.
I've always enjoyed competitive TF2, most of the people I've met have been good people
I'd definitely agree with that. The vast majority of competitive players are people who love the game and want it to grow. Most real comp players are willing to help out people who are new and teach them about the game.
In my time of competitive play (which is over 3 years now) you get to make very good friends in the process I've found. Honestly most of the people you are with and fight against are usually mature about it. I've played 4v4, 6v6 and Highlander and this seems to be the case in all of them. Of course over time of plays, you get the people who deserve to be in a trash can, but most of the time I shrug it off and ignore.
I like comp. I've played a few sixes pugs, a lot of HL lobbies and I'll be playing in the Highlander Open. I've had some of my best TF2 moments in comp, but also some of my worst. One time we were on BLU on upward, and not only did we take 16 minutes to finish but our scout was doing fuck all and spamming retarded binds and the people in mumble were either silent or assholes. But the good definitely outweighs the bad by a long shot.
I've been playing comp for about 2 years now and I can tell you that stuff like tf2lobby and tf2center does not represent at all what comp is about. Every team I've been on has been a lot of fun to play with, and the matches I've played have been a lot of fun (but very intense as well). As with most things, the vocal minority tends to stick in peoples' heads as what the entire community is about. Sure, I've met people like Punchy has described before, they do exist, but the majority of people I've played with are nice and respectable people (i don't like to throw names, but raysfire is the nicest person I've ever met).
