• The Pyro: Metaphor for Trolls and "Immature" gamers?
    31 replies, posted
Lets take a step back for a moment from this "Is the pyro a boy or girl?" thing that's been going on around since TF2 launched. Think of what the pyro is: An anonymous, faceless prick who's only form of communication is the occasional mumble, more often then not this mumbling contains what sounds like an obscure insults (Am I the only one who thinks the pyro mumbles "faggot" in one of his sound files?) Now think of the more obnoxious online game players, some kid behind a computer, who you don't know, occasionally communicating via chat box or voice chat, his(/her, rarely) personal opinion on your skill with crude insults. Do you really pay attention to these kinds of players? Or do you just tune out/mute them? Either way, you don't "hear" them. "But Grifflez, The pyro has a purse and walks in a very womanly manner in a "team loss" animation!" I think its common for some troll/Immature player to go around pretending to be a girl on the internet to garner attention. Of course this could all be me over thinking something trivial, I thought this was worth posting at least.
Of course not. Pyros are a metaphor for the silent gamer who doesn't spend his time complaining on the mic and sobbing on the forums.
I completely agree with you eatdembeanz. Simply rating you agree cannot show how much I agree with you, which is why I posted this. Think about it for a second. All the silent players you've probably played with, but never thanked for the heal, or the sentry.
I thought this was worth posting at least.
No
You're thinking too hard about it. The Pyro is supposed to be an insane, yet innocent character. Like a child burning ants with a magnifying glass.
OP is stoopid
You sound like the Sniper. How rude are you.
Stuff like this is the exact reason the General Chat thread was made. It'd be interesting to post about for like half a page, to see people's opinions, but it does not at all deserve its own thread.
When I was first reading this, I thought it was yet another person claiming Pyro was OP, but then I was like
Totally thread worthy
I used to main Pyro. I'm using my mic pretty often and I questions the skills of W+M1 Pyros. Am I an immature troll now? :saddowns:
No, you're trying to interpret the character to match your impressions, but with no solid basis. Stop reading into what isn't there- this applies to everyone trying to extrapolate some deep meaning from the characters, it isn't meant to be deep metaphorical commentary, it's meant to be unique game classes with distinct personalities. Or hey, maybe I'm wrong, maybe Valve did create them as deep philosophical statements. But at the end of the day, I'll be playing the game, and not trawling through sound files searching for something that may or may not exist, in a half-heard mumble.
Why so many boxes for the OP? Sure, the idea was a little out there, but at least he's trying to start a legitimate discussion.. It actually made me start to wonder if the Pyro, and maybe other classes are all metaphors for something.
Of course not. Pyros are a metaphor for the silent gamer who doesn't spend his time complaining on the mic and sobbing on the forums.
it makes sense. you'd have to be insane like the pyro to not complain about TF2's current direction.
Speaking of Pyro sound files, there's one that sounds like (s)he is saying "TALK TO THE HAND!"
Speaking of Pyro sound files, there's one that sounds like (s)he is saying "TALK TO THE HAND!"
Which would that be?
Which would that be?
As I remember, it's Help!, when standing on CP. And it's "Help me defend!"
Of course not. Pyros are a metaphor for the silent gamer who doesn't spend his time complaining on the mic and sobbing on the forums.
and also has fun playing the game
I think the Pyro's a metaphor not just for the silent game, but the unfamiliar gamer - and in two ways. On one hand, the Pyro is that mysterious pro who shows up in your server, completely turns the tables with his presence just long enough to wipe the floor with the other team, then leaves without a word. On the other hand, he's also the idiot who runs headlong into enemy fire, and with an obscured face you can never really tell if he's actually paying attention to any of this or if he's even above the age of twelve. Am I the only one here who kinda liked Grifflez' idea? I don't think it's what Valve intended, but it's an amusing theory - but if Pyro's a troll, don't forget the role his "flaming" plays there too.
I totally disagree with the OP And from what ive heard in my Gameplay, whenever i call every class Spy, it sounds like it says "The Pyro is a spy, "The heavy is a spy" etc. even tough it uses the same soundfile for each class
At about 27 Seconds he describes the OP
About 1:03 in that video is where it sounds like he's saying "TALK TO DA HAND!"
About 1:03 in that video is where it sounds like he's saying "TALK TO DA HAND!"
I see where you're coming from, but I think it's "Thanks for the help"
I see where you're coming from, but I think it's "Thanks for the help"
We Know? If you are tiring to pull a "deeper meaning" from this then you can imagine pyro saying some pretty funny things.
I think OP came to this decision after trying to facestab one too many pyros.
2007, and only two posts? What the fuck.
Why so many dumbs? Aren't people supposed to post their opinions anymore? I understand he maybe shouldn't have made a thread about it, but otherwise this seems a bit of a valid topic. You can critisize the idea, but don't critisize the guy himself for thinking something a bit different. I see where the guy is coming from, pyros usually cause rage if they go w+m1 Backburner or if they decide to cheap out with M2 spam using Degreaser and Axtinguisher. The very purpose of the Pyro is kind of shady, therefore you can make all kinds of theories about him. The other classes have very clear purposes though: Demoman, Soldier and Heavy are offensive, defensive while Engi, Spy, Sniper and Medic are supportive. Scout is just a distractive and flanking unit. But the Pyro? He can be defensive, supportive or offensive but not the best in any of those. He's the jack of all trades but master of none, making it one of the more versatile classes if played correctly and with a bit of luck. He can also support, offend or defend in various ways, be it flames or airblasting to fuck up the enemy's aim or go and puffsting a Heavy to behind fast enough so a Scout can come and meatshot him. Spies are an intricate class to play and arguably the more difficult ones. The fact that a Pyro can break a Spy's plans in a single swipe of a mouse is pretty fucking annoying, not to mention Homewrecker also removes sappers from engi buildings. It's as if the Pyro is mocking every single class trying to mimick them and partially succeeding. He's a troll that's good enough to piss people off "legit" (M2) or non-legit (M1) if she wants to. That's my opinion, anyway.
its possible to have a dumb opinion
If the pyro represents trolls, then Ravenholm represents /b/. "We don't go to 4chan."
