EDIT: Sheesh, people. I know this could be abused. I explained why not. Read down below, and quit saying spies would be at a disadvantage. They wouldn't be, and I explained why.
tl;dr at the bottom.
TF2 is a first person shooter. There's no question about that. Call me a MW2 fag, I won't give you the satisfaction of even reading your post (I don't play MW2 either, so there). Tell me I'm stupid, need to have hot coffee poured in my lap, and should be shot for suggesting something that will break the game mechanics. Do your worst, and I will merely shrug it off. Still, I feel I must speak my mind.
Team Fortress 2 should have a third person mode.
I'm not even saying it should be a completely separate gamemode as with MW2, but it feels, to me, like something that should be done. With increasingly prevalent character customization, I was thinking of the futility of hats, medals, ect. if we can't see them. My solution?
Add a friggin' third person mode.
You could say "Herp derp, this will break the game." Why? You can already go into third person with taunts, drinking bonk, ect. If the concern is about cheating and trying to see around corners, you might as well have taunts removed. But I don't see anyone suggesting that. Really, the idea is just a cosmetic change/addition, not unlike hats. It has little practicality (apart from maybe seeing a spy come up behind you ever so slightly sooner), and it would give us a chance to see the hats we spent ours idling for. Some of us may just want to play the game in third person. I don't see why not, either; you can do it while on Bonk!, with full control (minus shooting). Why not the entire time, if we want to?
tl;dr: Add a thirdperson setting and let us see our glorious hats.
What do you all think? Please don't kill me if this breaks a game mechanic that I forgot about.
Third person is a cheat since you could use it to look around corners with it.
Bad idea.

Congratulations.
You didn't even read my post did you? I already explained why this is not a cheat.
As much as I would like one, it just wouldn't work. The reason taunts are in third person is so you can see them happening, on top of that you can see your hat there too. It's not like your hat does anything spectacular while you're flying around the battlefield aside from sitting atop your head.

The point was that if you think your character looks good with it on, you should be able to see it on your head.
Some taunts could still be abused to look around corners. And let's face it...sometimes it's almost impossible to see exactly where a sentry (or sentries) is before you get killed (and it's not like it will actually help your team win any faster, because sentries aren't exactly that easy to hide once they've blown up everyone).
If we're going to worry about abuse (which can already potentially happen with taunts) with negligible benefits, let's fix the other issues in the game that are unfair.
I would like to see it from shoulder view, close by.
I'm a :ninja:
Over the shoulderview would be much better IMO.
I probably wouldnt play the gamemodes but it's a good idea.
If they ever did add an option to use thirdperson, I wouldn't use it. It's completely break my aim as a demo(And my aim is already pretty shit).
Third person is a cheat, you can partially see people behind you.
Backstabs are the reason this will never happen.
I'd like the losing animations to be thirdpersonshoulder because right now you can't see them because they're completely hidden by the big "OTHER TEAM SEIZES AREA" box
If they were to add third person, it would HAVE to be a server setting. Taunting disables movement and attacks, so using it to look around corners is incredibly risky. If thirdperson was an option, everybody would be forced to use it to keep up. It's a good idea, yes, but it's the sort of thing that only works as an everybody or nobody server setting.
Taunts aren't cheats because they render you immobile. Third Person Mode would be fun, but it's not something that should be made official as it would break a lot of maps.
I have a bad feeling about you considering you remind me of my spastic 12 year old cousin.
How would Spies backstab then?
Over the shoulderview would be much better IMO.

Well, I didn't say it was a gamemode...but over the shoulder sounds good too.
Third person is a cheat, you can partially see people behind you.
Depends on how far back the camera is. What I had in mind wouldn't be a direct port of the third-person camera's distance anyway.
People are paranoid enough as is. Spies will still get screwed over readily regardless of thirdperson.
Backstabs are the reason this will never happen.
Read above. If the camera is over the shoulder or close in enough, you won't see the spy until it's too late (as it usually is anyway).
How would Spies backstab then?
Read above.
If the camera isn't thirty feet behind you, you won't see a spy unless he comes from the side (and sidestabs are glitchy anyway and need to be fixed).
How would Spies backstab then?
They could be disguised :downs:

This: You can't actively use taunts to see around corner, but if you're permanently in third person, then you can use it to your advantage.
Spies
You are so fucking retarded, if you are going to taunt to see around a corner and someone pops out you can do NOTHING because you are taunting, but with third person you could see someone come around a corner and time your action perfectly and fight like normal..
This: You can't actively use taunts to see around corner, but if you're permanently in third person, then you can use it to your advantage.
How so? Bonk! already has third person on use.
Now you're going to tell me it's not a threat because you can't hurt anyone when it's active? You can scope out sentries more easily, not to mention more of a chance to avoid people trying to pin you in a corner.
You are so fucking retarded, if you are going to taunt to see around a corner and someone pops out you can do NOTHING because you are taunting, but with third person you could see someone come around a corner and time your action perfectly and fight like normal..
Reaction times. Get them.
In all seriousness, this isn't CSS. Not instantly reacting is less fatal (and if the other guy can kill you in two seconds flat, you would've died anyway, most likely).
The "abuse" argument doesn't really hold up. I can't see a reason to completely discount this. Tweak, maybe, but, as I said, Bonk! already grants these advantages, and nobody is moaning about seeing in third person.
Whenever you are at spawn, the camera moves to thirdperson mode. Here, you'll have free control of the camera. Move closer to your character's face and such.
When you leave the spawn area, camera reverts back to firstperson.
Simple enough.
Your "well you go in Third Person when taunting lol" argument is incredibly flawed.
Sure you can look around corners, but you are completely static and can't do shit, in this you have full control, reaction times or not your fast/slow reactions will not help you if you're stuck in a taunt numb nuts.
Oh, and you sound like an angry 12 year old band wagoner' in the OP with your "lol don't call me MW2 Fag suckah'" rant and the like.

Except that this completely defeats the point of a third person camera.
Not only can it be used by people with Bonk!, it's also active for the losers during humiliation. It can make it easier to hide if you know what you're doing.
Another thing. It would be easier to see around a wrangled sentry if you were in third person (though maybe the point was that you had to be exposed to have a clear view, in which case disregard this).
Your "well you go in Third Person when taunting lol" argument is incredibly flawed.
I cited Bonk! as well.

So, let's convince him to think like us by insulting him. That'll make him think we're right.
I've had plenty of occasions where this would've been useful (for instance, a sentry nest in the 2fort sewer with only engineers holding it down). Obviously, this is a more situational argument, but it is still possible to abuse third person this way. Again, nobody's complaining.
Oh, and you sound like an angry 12 year old band wagoner' in the OP with your "lol don't call me MW2 Fag suckah'" rant and the like.
What does this have to do with anything?
I didn't rant, and I'm not a "bandwagoner." A few months ago I played MW2 on the free weekend, and I'm well aware of the third person mode. Because people seem to readily compare anything and everything you say to MW2, I was anticipating someone accusing me of trying to rip off MW2's third person mode.
No. Terrible idea.
You want thirdperson mode so that you can look at your fucking hats. So just stop trying to argue that it wouldn't be gamebreaking because it will.
Also, the thirdpersonmode command can only be used when sv_cheats is turned on.
So obviously Valve has already made up their mind.
No. Terrible idea.
If it's so terrible, why not give some feedback?
I appreciate your opinion as long as you offer possible alternatives/tweaks. Don't just hit and run my thread.

I'm getting at the fact that people keep moaning about never seeing their hats/medals. This is a solution. If you don't like it, offer an alternative or a tweak. For instance, a helpful poster up there suggested an over-the-shoulder third person.
It could obviously be used as a cheat if it wasn't altered because you can see a spy from quite some distance behind you. If the third person mode (non-cheat) was tweaked to bring the camera in closer, there wouldn't be as much of an issue.

Ok then. Here's a possible alternative: first person.

Har har. Really useful. That's absolutely groundbreaking, and I never would've come to that astounding enlightenment if it wasn't for your superior intellect. Have my children!

Third person over-the-shoulder as a server setting would be pretty cool.
