Going to grab this post so I can probably update it with better information at a later point; From what Day9 said after the reveal (from someone's summary on Reddit)
There are three game boards that represent the lanes You control 5 heroes, just like DotA You can equip item cards on to the Heroes that you buy with gold There are creeps that spawn every turn You can play creature cards Some cards are cast on the lane and have persistent effects on that lane Each Hero has abilities like their DotA counterparts ("You can cast track on a Hero as Bounty Hunter and get extra Gold")
Hey look, Valve is finally responding to Overwatch!!
Card games are the new Kart games
DOTA fans at the International were sure excited about the game: https://mobile.twitter.com/nickisnixed/status/895091539025698816/video/1

Who is this even made for? Hearthstone's setting works because it uses characters from multiple games, this only ever really stands to gain a fraction of Dota 2's playerbase. If they were going to follow this tgc trend then why not make it based within the entire Valve universe?
the simultaneous "awwww" will forever haunt the ears of the valve devs that thought anyone would like this
Good, maybe realizing that even hardcore dota fans are starved for real valve content will make them make a fucking actual game. but of course self awareness and valve go together like water and oil crosspost from the SH thread on this, in relation to the video reveal:
The "I expected nothing and i was still disappointed" meme summed up in 11 seconds. 10 years since Episode 2. 6 since Portal 2. If this isn't a sign to Valve that people are disappointed that they only focus on microtransactions, i don't know what is.

Who is this even made for? Hearthstone's setting works because it uses characters from multiple IPs, this only ever really stands to gain a fraction of Dota 2's playerbase. What actually makes Hearthstone work is that the gameplay and tone are vastly different from wow. From what little we know, artifact sounds like dota but with cards, with mechanics of lanes, bots, 5 heroes etc., all things in dota already.

At an event dedicated to that very franchise. No one wants this game. No one.
This is a special kind of dreadful.

The only reason I can think of that they're going with the Dota 2 theme, if they're considering/have considered including Valve IPs and externals etc, is that unfortunately the Dota brand name is their strongest bet at the moment. Some examples: Dr. Kleiner Announcer Portal Bundle And the numerous promotional items traditionally started by TF2.
4 years of wait for this, folks.
Better luck next year I guess.
I'll have to see the gameplay before I pass my judgement by yelling "Who asked for this?" Clearly nobody actually asked for this, but not everything is done to feed the appetite of people who yell loud enough. From the Day9's description it seems at least somewhat interesting. Past all that, we still have the 3 teased VR games! How much do you bet people are gonna go "We want Valve to make games, but only games WE want" again?
worth the weight
Also, there's no acronym for this. Artifact. AT. ATFCT. I mean most people who play Hearthstone don't call it HS but this is sure fun to say
If League made use of LoL then Artifact can do the same with ART.
I hope the cards are going to be sellable on the market. Cause that's the thing missing from hearthstone. Making some money on the side for just playing it.
If League made use of LoL then Artifact can do the same with ART.
As in, "Now that we have to pay for card packs to unlock gameplay, Valve have got microtransactions down to an ART"
Also, there's no acronym for this. Artifact. AT. ATFCT. I mean most people who play Hearthstone don't call it HS but this is sure fun to say
D2A Maybe?
I didn't want dota when that was announced but ended up really liking it despite not liking LoL/moba games. Maybe I'll like this one too even though I dislike Hearthstone. But I guess we'll have to wait and see
i never thought i'd see the day where valve would announce a new game and people would actually be disappointed how low have they fallen
Disappointments never end. I'm seriously questioning Valve as a company right now.
Only now?

Ricochet 2 is looking great
What an awful time to be a fan of classic valve content.
Pretty excited to see how it plays
I bet this is one of these 3 big VR games they talked about. This one will probably be the only one running on Source 2 engine XD. I just hope Valve will announce something worthy really soon, because even I am already loosing my hope.... Even though I already lost it, as I´m one of those who don´t plan to move on to VR within the coming 2 years and as Valve´s games are now supposed to be VR exclusive, it´s nothing for me anyway...
