At E3, Nintendo will be announcing new hardware, the Nintendo 3DS.
Nintendo describes the portable as allowing games to be "enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses". According to Nintendo, the product will go on sale between April 2010 and March 2011.
The Nintendo 3DS will succeeded the Nintendo DS series and will have backward compatibility for Nintendo DS and DSi games.
In early January, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata gave an interview with Japan's second largest newspaper The Asahi Shimbun in which he apparently said the Nintendo DS successor will have "highly detailed graphics, and it will be necessary to have a sensor with the ability to read the movements of people playing".
Nintendo of America later told Kotaku that the Asahi Shimbun had "misinterpreted" Iwata's remarks. "Mr. Iwata did not make any comments regarding the functions of Nintendo's future hardware systems," Charlie Scibetta, Nintendo of America's senior director of corporate communications told Kotaku. "The answer to the reporter's question was misinterpreted."
The Asahi Shimbun stands by its reporting and issued a statement to Kotaku Japan that read: "The article quoted Nintendo President Satoru Iwata's comment accurately." The actual quote in the article is a fragment of a longer sentence.
At a Nintendo quarterly Q&A, the exec addressed the issue with the Asahi Shimbun, asserting that the reporter stated, "The graphics for the next DS will be highly detailed and it will contain a motion sensor, right?" Iwata claims he then replied, "Those things are naturally being required. But do you think it would sell with just that?" Iwata emphasized that this last part was left completely out.
It appears that the extra element Nintendo believed was necessary to really sell the DS successor is 3D.
Regarding 3D, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has previously stated that Nintendo would need to look into the "possible health effects" of playing video games in 3D for prolonged periods of time.
Now, a lot of this would seem like blasphemy without a source, but there is a direct link to a PDF straight from Nintendo's japan web page, which is below.
nintendo.co.jp
Filesmelt mirror, in case it disappears off Nintendo's site.
Now, I can't read Japanese, which I assume that is, but you can clearly see the term "3DS" in the PDF. If someone could get a rough translation of what it says, that would be great. This sounds to be really neat, and I really hope Nintendo can pull off 3D without glasses. Would be a giant step forward for 3D gaming. Apparently there is going to be quite a few other features, including a "3D joystick", Force Feedback, Rumble, and an Accelerometer.
I will attempt to keep the topic updated as time goes on, especially once E3 rolls around, I'm sure there will be a slew of information.
Got around the PDF security with some PDF cracker tool online, Google translate says this.
[UPDATE] Though Nintendo's official announcement of the 3DS was light on information, additional details on the upcoming handheld appear to have surfaced from Japanese business daily Nikkei. The newspaper's online edition reports that the 3DS will feature a thumb stick for controlling movement in a 3D plane as well as rumble functionality. The handheld will also reportedly feature greatly enhanced battery life, improved network connectivity, and a screen size that's smaller than four inches.

Ahaha.
Nintendo 3DSi XL ?
pretty much they add more shit onto the end of it.
Before you all pass judgement, at least wait to see the thing.
Better not just be the DS with 3D effects. I only buy new handhelds if they have significant hardware improvements.

Then what the fuck is this thread for?
It needs to have better graphics than the PSP, and the option to play without 3D or Motion Control shit, and it'll be decent.
From that description, it sounds shit.
(DS lite owner, happy with it.)
What a bunch of bullshit.
Oh god nintendo, not more gimmicks please.. :(
give me zelda

The only thing i want out of Nintendo is a DS with better graphics. At least PSP standards by now.
Oh and more mature games, but that's it.
I wonder if it'll have waggling like the wii.
Hopefully they'll port Ocarina of Time to it.
give me zelda
Give it to me too it's been too long since Twilight Princess. :(
Welcome to the future.
If they put Luigi's Mansion, Skies of Arcadia, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and Pikmin on it, I'll buy one.
This seems gay.
The 2 screens will be positioned horizontally and you'll have to do that thing where you cross your eyes in-between to achieve stunning 3D!

I'm gonna look SO COOL while playing that thing!
hope they make a flash card that works with the new ds
Great, more gimmicks.
[editline]03:08PM[/editline]
also 3ds is already a trademark of autodesk.
Nintendo better scrap this piece of shit and make a new 2D Metroid.
I got my fat DS in 2004 or 2005. Do Nintendo except me to buy all their (barely) upgraded versions of the same handheld I already own? I've wondered this since the DS lite
Enough gimmicks.
Why can't Nintendo just release a sturdy system and a new, gimmick-free Zelda?
