I keep reading up on people who are disgruntled about the promises left unfulfilled by Valve when it comes to HL2 Alpha and Beta content. I wholeheartedly agree with them -- some very cool shit was cut. Traptown's physics traps, for example, were creative and a lot more diverse in their implementation than they were in our currently beloved Ravenholm. There were synths and enemies galore that were pulled out of the game, and although I see the benefit in combining enemies together ala Fast Zombie, you can't say you didn't want to see evidence of more Xen life having been dropped down on Earth, more evidence of a devastating war lasting only 7 hours (you'd think we'd last longer than that, but if they can do it in seven fucking hours a lot of shit must've went down), and overall more evidence of a universal, dimension spanning empire as we were so hyped for.
Basically, I believe HL2 had just enough content to keep the game interesting, but seeing the cut content of Raising the Bar makes me sad. HL2 could've been a much darker, much more dystopic game; I would've very much enjoyed a darker atmosphere both figuratively and literally, as I really didn't feel that oppressed at the beginning of the game, and I never really found the game to be as depressing as I expected. I think that someone should got about remastering Half-Life 2 the same way that Black Mesa is remastering HL1. It would be amazing to see environments more physically alive (like the blinders on windows -- genius), and the AI reworked to live up to the expectations set to it (Other Source games have improved the regular soldier AI greatly -- why can't Vanilla HL2 get the same IQ?). Hell, I wouldn't mind just getting some of the cut set-pieces back. Air-Ex? Natural-Resource stealing? I know that their gameplay were still worked into HL2, and some of them are implied, but the concepts alone warrant attention and a stronger inclusion back into the canon.
This, in addition to the graphical updates of the engine, would be great. I'm not expecting Valve to do it, but Valve had the attitude to HL1 "let the community do it" so why not with HL2?

Gah, I thought I was posting in Valve Games.
fixed it for you
If anyone's gonna do it, it won't be VALVe. They have EP3 to worry about. Who knows, maybe the BM:S team will do it in about 10 years?
they should remaster your face
(User was banned for this post ("Trolling" - verynicelady))
They'd have to remaster Ep1 and Ep2 as well, it would be a massive amount of work taking like five years to do.
But imagine if they hadn't cut all that shit, it would've been like the best game EVERRRR
I like both the RTB HL2 and the current HL2. But I'd rather keep my current HL2 as it is. I'd like the RTB HL2 as a mod or something, like GabeN HL2.
Bingo Mod (formerly MI).
Problem is, (part of) Team GBN's working on it, so I expect a 2015-never release.
I think they should keep the current one, but make it much darker and oppressed. Feels too happy and sunny and OH LOOK A COMBINE SQUAD and happy and sunny.
I want my OB update. Achievements and the newer effects on Pc should have been released AAAGGESS ago on PC. They don't have to recreate a whole game.
Remakes are bad
Unless they make it like the beta
I'm sick of all this concept bullshit. Annoying fucks like you constantly wish for what seems like a 'perfect' game, without pulling your head out of your ass to realize it already is one.
You ever come to realize that they pulled all that shit for a reason? It's because it DIDN'T FIT THE PLOT. They had over 5 years to figure all this out, they knew what they were doing. Every game has a conceptual phase where they go over ideas to put into it. If you've ever looked back in history to other games (Take Starcraft, for example), you'd see that they normally redo the game multiple times to get the right solution.
They had no choice but to sacrifice something, dark atmosphere, or realism. And seeing how realism and physics lead to a fun and enjoyable game, they went with it.
Have you ever had any sense that the game was functional while playing an Alpha map? My guess is no. Even looking at the Missing Information, a lot of the maps around there are more based on looks than actual gameplay, forcing you into unmovable conditions as you sit there and shoot at things from a distance. Jesus fucking christ, you people are stupid.
And in what way is remastering HL2 going to be like Black Mesa is to HL1? They're recreating the looks and gameplay of it, not adding the numerous shitty monsters that were cut out because they eventually had NO FUCKING PURPOSE.
HL2 does indeed have just enough content. Any more of your bawwing and requests for pointless ideas would have ruined it. End of story.

The Combine weren't the first creatures to land on Earth. Antlions, headcrabs, and other various Xen creatures pushed them back into the cites as a final defense, then the combine arrived. Which is why the war lasted only 7 hours.
No, leave it as it is. Remastering hardly ever works.

This, the cut content may look good on paper, but is shit otherwise.

I wish I was back
Fair enough adding little things here and there (random things you notice on your travels, like background NPCs or scenery), but redoing the whole game is unnecessary.
Also, the stuff that was cut from the final game wouldn't be cool anymore if they stuck it in anyway. The beta stuff is great to look at and read about and would lose it's nostalgic feel if it was actually used. If you want the uncut stuff so badly, play the beta.
In short, it's a bad idea.
My idea of remaster: add achievements (they're already on STEAM) and OB engine, and improve AI.
Damn, Water|Marine took the words out of my mouth.
You only feel like you want that beta stuff back just because it sounded cool on paper and you don't actually have it. It's a great story to read about and a lot of talented writing went into the cut stuff, but when it translates to gameplay it doesn't translate well. Valve knew what they were doing and the current HL2 is a perfect balance of the ideas they came up with during its development cycle.
The only things I would ever want Valve to mess with regarding the original HL2 would basically be what the 360/PS3 Orange Box HL2 is - new engine, some graphics upgrades, and better AI (and Achievements, though I already did those on the 360 version). I recently did a full replay of all the PC Half-Life games and I gotta say HL2 really is starting to look dated compared to its later episodes.
It's still an amazing game, though, and in regards to major changes like storyline and gameplay I really wouldn't have it any other way than it is now.
HL2 was perfect. All that beta crap was cut for a reason. Valve know more about game design than you.
I disagree. HL2 was far from perfect.
HL2 Episode 2 on the other hand, now that's perfection.

And HL2 shouldn't have had it's dark atmosphere cut.
Shut up stupid.

Terribly sorry, you're right.
Maybe we can go consult Valve, seeing as they're the ones who had logical reasoning to make the game as it is.
Fuck logic. Impulsive brutishness all the way.
If you dont like the way HL2 is, your probably playing the wrong game.
Its simple, yet fun. And I think its the best game i've ever bought.
If they change the engine it will make legitimate speed running twice as hard. D:
If they just redid HL2 with darker lighting and rain most of the time, along with smoke and much darker grungy skyboxes, that would pretty much give you a feeling of oppression.

No no I agree, it's simple yet fun. Like I said they had the pacing perfect hands down. I also do realize the gameplay of certain setpieces were worked back in (Nova Prospekt was a puree of several levels, and the episodes are cutting back to levels such as the Borealis), but they cut out a lot of things for the sake of performance such as other physics props (if you shot a vending machine cans kept pouring out), and now that the hardware has gotten up to speed having HL2 put these things back in would be an interesting experience.
Do I want the Alpha or Beta, brush for brush and prop for prop? No. But there are some parts I believe can be afforded to be put back in to enhance the experience. I agree with Awesome Dino. I never feared the Combine. To see levels become darker, more oppressive, and more immersive isn't fucking with a masterpiece, it's touching it up.
Need OB update, that is all.
Same for ep1
Here's my thought. The War lasted seven hours, yet the rebels are kicking the combines but with only you and like 6 rebels and barney. So how did the earth lose with like 6 billion people all fighting the combine? Thats when earth was strongest...

Because they were also dealing with rampant and wild Xen fauna?
