I was told by someone that a game called Freespace 2 is free to download and play, can someone confirm this for me, and tell me where I can download it from, because I can't find a Freespace website.

The company that made freespace 2 (Volition) was bought out, but before they went they released the code for the game to the public, causing the creation of the Source Code Project (SCP). As the origanl official site nolonger exists for the game the SCP site has become the new official site.

It provides like to other sites that sells the game and I think despite a line in the licence agreement saying you could share copy's with friends the free downloads would probably count as warez, otherwise free links would be provided on this site.
Freespace 2 is not free and technically never was legally free.
It used to be available for free on the Source Code Project website because for a long time there was no reasonable way to buy it legally.
However, recently it has been made available through GOG.com and a few other websites, and because of that the free download is no longer necessary and has been taken down.
On a related note, if you do get Freespace 2 I suggest downloading and installing the latest version of the Freespace Open, as vanilla Freespace 2 has trouble running on modern systems.
