F1 2010 creator Codemasters has a novel idea it could use to combat the threat of second hand videogame sales – sell half a game in shops and the other half as downloadable content.
That, according to CEO Rod Cousens, would not only help tackle the earnings lost from used game sales but piracy, too.
"It's not inconceivable to say that we send out a Formula One game that's not complete - maybe it's got six tracks," he told Eurogamer sister site GamesIndustry.biz.
"Then they have to buy their next track, and you follow it around the world. When you turn up in Abu Dhabi you have to pay for the circuit, and whatever the changes are to the cars that are put through.
"That, I think, would deal with a lot of it, and also address the pre-owned."
If Codies follows through on its idea, it expects resistance from shops.
"What we have to figure out is how we're going to work together to make this happen," Cousens said.
"If retail takes a confrontational point of view and says that if we go online, they won't stock the box - and publishers then say that all they're going to do is put out DLC after launch that retail can't participate in... it's ridiculous.
"Actually, you need them to get to the stage where they stock the box. It's not inconceivable that you're going to ask them to give the box away at some point in time. But then, they participate to an extent in the subsequent DLC exploitation."
Ah, exploitation. How we've missed you.
Codemasters basically want to sell half finished games in order to fight second hand sales. You will have to download (buy) the other half of the game later.
What is this world becoming to? :colbert:

That's fucking ridiculous
Wouldn't they loose more money this way? What if they don't buy the other halves?
Fuck this.
Just an excuse for not reaching their deadlines.
They make great games, but really?
$60 each
This is just getting ridiculous. I used to love Codemasters.
This is a crappy idea.
they should stop wasting their time on things like this and release a sequel to GRID
activision will pick up on this
CALL OF DUTY PART 1: $29.99
CALL OF DUTY PART 2: $29.99
CALL OF DUTY PART 3: $29.99
CALL OF DUTY: EXTR3ME DLC: $14.99
CALL OF DUTY: ULTRA DLC: $14.99
CALL OF DUTY PART 5: $59.99
Activision should pick up on this, they'd make big bank, bro.
Oh god no.
I can't think of what to say. This is just wrong, I say.

Oh hey, I actually came up with something to say.
Codemasters are going to lose a lot of money if they do this.

That's what people said about Apple when they unveiled the iPad.
Stupidest idea I've ever heard.
Since when are second hand sales a threat? They've always been here and the industry has been fine.
From a business standpoint, this is actually a pretty nifty idea to drive profits directly back to the developer.
They are screwed.
Interesting idea, will completely fall flat if and when they try to do it.
And then the pirates will get the whole game for free
Again
Can someone remind me of a recent and decent game Codemasters has even made? Please? Thanks.

NOBODY said that. What the hell are you smoking?
People were wanting to toss money at Apple for an ipad before it was even officially announced.
Nope. Just checked the list.

Well, LOTRO. Never played it, but everyone who does seems to like it.
At first I thought "Making a customer download half the game later? Well that's kind of stupid"
Then I read that you have to pay for the "extra" content. I regret even giving them the $5 I spent on GRID, this is just the stupidest thing I've ever heard.
EA have been doing this already, the example that comes to mind is the code you got with Battlefield Bad Company 2 that gave you access to a few extra maps - on the day of release.

Yeah except that code was free not $15 (or whatever they're planning on charging)
If half the game is half the price, it'd be good since if the game sucks, you paid half the cost.

Cool, way to misinterpret the news story completely. It's designed to combat used game sales, not to charge more for a complete game. It's the same thing what EA is doing, just going a bit overkill with it.

GRiD, DiRT1, DiRT2
Starcraft II in Brazil.
You pay $15, but you can only play it for 6 months. Even singleplayer.
:colbert:
I wouldn't mind paying 15$ for a 6 month trial since most games don't last even a month.
Instead of paying $60 for 2-3 days of game.
