I'm surprised there hasn't been a big fat thread for the series yet. In this thread I'm trying to spoil as little as possible. That's why all you people who already played a MOTHER game will notice that I didn't go too much into detail.
Anyway. Mother is, for those of you who don't know, the RPG series that Ness and Lucas in SSBB come from. It's also maybe one of the strangest series ever. It's famous for being cute, funny and emotional and even downright disturbing sometimes. Only one of the three games was released outside of Japan, and that was MOTHER 2 (Known to the west as Earthbound) which made it to the USA. 1 and 3 didn't come out in any western place but both games DO have roms that have been translated to English (though I can't tell you where to find them, warez rules and stuffs).
Gameplay wise, MOTHER sticks closely to traditional RPGs with a lot less grinding, but the modern day setting and strange atmosphere make this series very unique. The games typically start out very cute and funny but gradually get darker and more serious as it goes on. The series is known to cause some strange emotions. Sometimes you'll be laughing your head off, sometimes it makes you nearly cry like a bitch.
Also, it was named after the John Lennon song "Mother".
MOTHER 1/Earthbound Zero:
The least popular game of the series, it wasn't really that good. It was an NES game that came out in 1989 in Japan only. I can't say much about it cause I didn't play it.
Plot:
Mother tells the story of Ninten, a 12-year-old boy with psionic powers who journeys around the world to collect eight melodies in order to save the planet from an evil race of mind-controlling aliens. (Ninten is named after Nintendo, just as Ness is named after the SNES) Along the way he is joined by three friends; a young boy tormented at his school for being a nerdy genius, a girl whose mother mysteriously went missing, and a gang leader whose parents were murdered. They meet many unusual characters and visit strange settings before ultimately confronting the leader of the aliens, Gyiyg.
Ninten's power, PSI, was utilized by an alien race that abducted George and Maria, his great-grandmother and great-grandfather. George stole the secrets to the power while living among the aliens, and upon his return to Earth attempted to research it further and spread the research. Of the four playable characters, Ninten, possessed it due to being the great-grandson of George, while Ana, the only female in your team, had developed her PSI powers on her own, and became famous in her hometown, Snowman, for having done so.
Though George and Maria were not mistreated while in captivity of the aliens (Due to Maria taking care of an alien named Gyiyg (Giygas in English), Gyiyg sought revenge on George for stealing the secrets of PSI, and subsequently launched an invasion of the planet Earth.
A strange little scene from MOTHER 1
MOTHER 2/Earthbound:
The most famous game of the series and the only one that made it to the west (where it didn't sell too well though). It came out in 1994 in Japan and 1995 in the US for the SNES.
Plot: (Bear in mind, saying even the smallest things about what happens past the beginning already can ruin quite a bit of the game)
The game starts off with Ness waking up in the middle of the night cause of a loud crash. He finds out a meteorite has crashed near his hometown of Onett. Inside it, there was an insectoid from the future who told him that he has to save the world from Giygas, who's trying to invade again. Ness realizes he has strange PSI powers, grabs his baseball bat and sets off on a strange as fuck and emotionally stirring adventure.
The main characters are:
Main party:
Ness, the main protagonist
Paula, a girl gifted in PSI
Jeff, a gifted geek
Poo, a kung-fu monk of some sort
Others:
Pokey Minch: Ness' nextdoor neighbour. He's fat, annoying and nobody likes him really.
Giygas: The antagonist. Can't say anything about him as it would be a massive spoiler. Appeared as the antagonist in MOTHER 1 where he was called Gyiyg.
Apple Kid: A shy, yet brilliant inventor. He creates various helpful stuff, like an eraser that erases pencils.
Dr. Andonuts: Yet another brilliant inventor
also Jeff's dad
The Mr. Saturns: A race of friendly aliens that seem to be just a big-nosed head with whiskers and feet. Every single one of them's called Mr. Saturn.
The Runaway Five: A popular band that keeps getting into financial trouble.

MOTHER 3/Earthbound 2
This game came out for the GBA in 2006, Japan only. It's got a far darker and sadder theme than the rest of the series yet it's still hilarious at times.
Plot:
The story begins in the peaceful, rural village of Tasmily. A forest fire breaks out one night. Flint and the other villagers must save some fellow villagers stuck in the burning forest. Little did they know that what seemed to be just a typical, natural event would cause some serious changes to the place. (Fuck, this one's even harder to write about without spoiling D:)
Characters:
Playable:
Flint, father of 2 children.
Claus, son of Flint. He's very energetic and slightly reckless.
Lucas, Claus' younger twin brother. He's very shy and a bit of a crybaby.
Duster, a crafty theif.
Kumatora, a tomboyish girl that's very gifted with PSI.
Boney, the dog of Flint's family.
Salsa, a mistreated monkey
Others:
Hinawa, Flint's wife and the mother of Claus and Lucas.
Wess, Duster's dad.
Alec, Hinawa's dad.
Yokuba/Fassad (depending on the language), a mean ass bastard. Can't reveal too much about him.
Frogs: They save your game!
Mapson: He gives people maps.
The Dragos: Playful dinosaur like creatures. Though they look dangerous, they're very friendly.
The Masked Man, a strange, evil guy...
The Magypsies: 7 transvestite like people, what the fuck. They have a far longer lifespan than humans and they're gifted at PSI. They raised Kumatora.
DCMC: A rock band.

Also, a good link: www.starmen.net for all your MOTHER and creepy over-obsessed fan needs.
Ffff, I forgot that you shouldn't call them threads megathreads no more
Giygas is fucking creepy :crying:
I never got past Threed in Earthbound. Possibly because I was eight at the time.
Daymn, I have to play that again sometime.
EDIT: Also, one of the bosses in SSBB is from Earthbound. I don't want to say anything else but I know it's gonna spoil the game for me, knowing who he is etc. etc.
god damn pokey.
Uh...
[sp]Depending on how you look at the translation, "Ninten" and "Ness" are the same character. Just with the classic Nintendo "I forgot everything I used to know for the sake of making the game about me finding it again" restart. Also, "Giegue"/Giygas is a chick. At least, Japanese art supports this, Mother treated it slightly ambiguously and "he" tends to be depicted as either androgynous or female.[/sp]

Fuck yeah! Loved Earthbound. I'll need to play Mother 3 soon.
"Ninten" and "Ness" are the same character.
Uh-huh.
Where does it say this?
Reguardless, if Ninten=Ness, Ness would be twenty-something in Earthbound.
Anyways, I tried playing Earthbound awhile back, but the beginning part had so much GRINDAN that I stopped.
Now I'm playing it on my Wii, and It's really starting to grow on me.
Reguardless, if Ninten=Ness, Ness would be twenty-something in Earthbound.
Uh...no? There's no solid dates, they pulled a Megaman on that. And it's what gives weight to the "Strikes Back" portion of the story.
I said it depended on the translation- or, you know, if you can read Japanese- it can come off differently than you're assuming. Besides, "Ness" was only picked due to size issues, and Ninten was 12. Ness, in Earthbound, is 13.
Makes sense. Then again, what, Mother 3 ends with the entire goddamn continuity thrown into a shredder, so you may as well go with whatever made sense in whatever language you played it in.
Edit:
Eh, fuck this anyway, I need some Porkey music.

They've said in interviews again and again that Mother1 takes place in a early-80's setting, and Earthbound in an early-90's setting.
Who's "they"?

If you can't gather, I love the music and subsequent remixes of the music.
Itoi and co.

Eh, fuck him, he doesn't know anything.[/sarcasm] But really though, that doesn't mean much besides design aesthetic. They used X's for the year, for all you know 198X is 1989 and 199X is 1990. I mean, there's no explicit break between the two.

I apparently need to get one song I like from this series in each post I make.
Oh and repostan my fatass self from the Halloween thread

So who else basically came in their pants when they heard Brawl's versions of some of these?

I love his themes only because of how childish they are. There's just something hilarious about a song with that basic of a melody thundering about like the national anthem.
Well, I never played any of the Mother games until after I got brawl, so I don't experience any of the nosatlgia-goggle effect
Wish there a working save fix for the MAC.
I playing earthbound on a emulator right now. It's awesome but kinda hard.
Hahahaha...Poo...
Giygas is utterly fucking creepy. Seriously, I watched some gameplay videos and it's really cute/funny but then you get to the final boss and it scared the shit out of me.
Possibly the creepiest thing about Giygas is, in his/its third and final form, there is a[sp]silhouette that looks like a foetus[/sp]in the background. Worst mindfuck ever, and I only saw it after someone told me. :crying:
I really couldn't get into this game. The story sounds hilarious, but I just got bored so fast with the combat system.
Also, the unused boss, Rope Snake, probably caused by Energizing shrooms from Mother 3.
Causes mass nausea, beware.

I'm not your friend buddy
that's actually the original last boss of the game. it makes perfect sense if you actually fought the real last boss
[sp]Lucas's Mom dies. Porky is the leader of all the bad guys, he's old now. He brainwashed Claus to do stuff for him. Claus dies at the end of the game by killing himself with lightning. Fassad is the last magypsy, you kill him before you find out.[/sp]
I don't plan to play Earthbound 2 again until I get the SNES cartridge, it's just not the same. I mean the memories of playing it when I was a wee lad, I just can't do it.
When I do get it (probably around the time I get a job, which could be soon.) the nostalgia alone should make my penis erupt with cum.

Good luck, It's a GBA game.
EDIT:
Wait, do you mean Earthbound?
I know there's a lot of name disputes among the neckbeards of the internet about the title, but calling Earthbound 2 is just a stretch
Am I the only one who beat MOTHER3 in Japanese? Everyone I've seen is such a pussy and afraid to play it in Japanese.
When I bought the cart, I knew no japanese or the plot of the game; I was just a huge MOTHER fan. The whole story explains itself in the visuals :geno:
EDIT: Also, starmen.net is a horrible community.
could've sworn there was a megathread a few weeks ago
What do you guys think of Earthbound 64 I've always wondered how it would have played if they'd ended up releasing it. Personally I think Mother's better in 2D, but the preview's pretty cool to watch.

Apparently it would've had an even more fucked up theme.
I just finished Mother 3 an hour ago (thank you fan translation!) and it was just amazing. I'm kinda depressed now. Same feeling I got with EB (one of my top 3 games ever) only more, because I know this is the last Mother game (as far as we know).
Anytime I hear either of the two 8 Melodies, Pollyanna, or the Theme of Love, I get really emotional. Everyone needs to play these games.
Jesus the Mother Series is goood. I have Mother 1 and 2 on GBA all in Japanese. I also have Earthbound on the SNES. I haven't played 3 yet. I don't want to download a GBA emulator. Bubble Monkey makes my heart giggle.

ninten and ness had separate stickers in brawl FYI
if they were the same character and it was a translation error they would have fixed that
[sp]none of the official artwork depicts giygas as female, the female giygas/giegue typically seen in fanart originated from a japanese artist who goes by the name of "morphine"[/sp]
