• How are racing games on the PC?

I never tried one before, except some game at my cousins house, don't recall what it was though. But anywho, Since I've gained more interest using my pc as my primary gaming "system" I wanted to know how games other than FPS's and RTS's feel.
Really good. I don't have a wheel, I just use a keyboard, but I really enjoy games like rFactor, GRiD and GTR
If you are going to play it on the PC, you'll really want some kind of analog control.
They are a zillion times more realistic than on consoles. rFactor and Live For Speed (LFS) seem to be popular. If you don't want extreme realism you can always go with DirT or GriD or even Need for Speed.
Race Driver Grid looks really great, and isn't that process intensive, so you get pretty good FPS in it.

I can't imagine running F1 cars at Toban, downshifting 5 gears in 1.5 seconds, while turning and not slamming or spinning using a keyboard, Hell it's hard enough on a wheel =(
I like racing games better on a keyboard than I do with a wheel/analog sticks, controls pretty well.
They do quite good, but I'd say get a gamepad (or a steering wheel with gear selector for the extra realism) to play them good.
Good. Plus you can mod them.
The Trackmania series is one of my favourites (not a 'serious' racing game), and Nations is completely free and has a large online community of multiplayer servers and custom content.
Though I would suggest a controller, wheel, or joystick, even keyboard control can work if you're good. I wouldn't suggest mouse though.
I have an xbox 360 controller for playing Trackmania. You can do pretty well with just a keyboard but now that I have analog controller I'm finally beating all of my best times.
GRID is absolutely awesome.
GRID is absolutely awesome.
Indeed. But teammates suck.
I have Need for Speed Most Wanted, and it works perfectly with a gamepad. I plan on fixing up my old PS2 steering wheel, and modding it to USB. I really want GRiD and DiRT 2.
Are you looking for realistic or acade ones? If you're aimaing for realistic ones like rFactor get yourself a steering wheel. If you want to play arcade ones like Need for Speed or GRiD I suggest you get an xbox360 controller or something similar.
Test Drive Unlimited is the only driving game I actually use a wheel for. I use my keyboard for Grid and Burnout Paradise, which are all great and fun games.
Absolutely fantastic with the right equipment.
How in the fuck do you play rfactor with a Keyboard? Turning is impossible :v:
Test Drive Unlimited is pretty good, The range of cars is nice and the island is HUGE. There are a few things that annoy me on it though, turning, repetitive sounds and why does everybody drive with their fucking headlights on during the day.
GRID is awesome, the AI is sometimes quite easy to beat though, even during the downhill drift events the AI is quite easy to beat.
GRID is fine with a keyboard. I'd rather use a gamepad but mine doesn't work with it. Although a keyboard is good because you can turn very slightly.

I completely suck though. :v:
I said I enjoy playing them. I completely suck though. :v:
Ha, without a doubt they are fun, much more fun with a wheel I'd think, the only game that was ever popular and keyboard accessible was Nascar Racing Season 2003... It had a setting called Driver Assist... Pop that baby to 100% and all you have to do is hold up the Up arrow. Used to drive with a guy quite a bit and he was good.. able to hold the Middle at 3 wide and such, which is hard in that game online... come to find out months later, he only uses a keyboard

I got 2nd place using a keyboard with the hardest difficulty. :smug:
They are excellent, but get a controller or a wheel or something. They are hard as fuck to play with a keyboard.
try rFactor The best one you'll get.
Racing games and emulators are the ONLY thing I ever use with a controler... Pick a decent controller up with analog sticks and if possible, triggers that are on an axis. The best thing would be an old wired Xbox controller with the USB hack.
GRiD was great, but the steering is very sensitive if you're using a keyboard.
Yeah GRID has to be the best. I heard burnout: paradise was good as well, here are some GRID videos I made.. Multiplayer in GRID is good too so long as you don't find people who crash into you to slow down on corners.
