http://web.archive.org/web/19991003221720/www.sierrastudios.com/games/teamfortress/ Am i one of the only ones who has not forgotten about this unreleased valve title? It looked fucking awesome. I have so many magazines still that showcase some early screenshots. Too bad Valve ditched the project when Steam launched. (NOT MY SCAN) http://www.kupoartist.eclipse.co.uk/gman/extraimg/tf2promo1999.jpg Kind of makes you wonder why Gman is in one of the screenshots? Possible Black Mesa tie-in. I remember reading that the game would support 32 players. Featured a game mode where one team had to defend a bridge from the other team. The defending team would have a controllable tank and the other teams objective was to destroy the bridge so the convoy could not move across it. For those of you who don't know valve was working on another version of the working title on the source engine. Team Gaben is re-creating that: Was also able to pull some stuff from a very old website about TF2:
Classes: Marine The standard army grunt, just like the soldier in TF, and TFC, armed with a sturdy assault rifle and carrying a disposable SMAW for heavier targets. Apparently you need to kneel to shoot the SMAW. SMAW: a standard issue Rocket Launcher for the Marine class. Basically, it is similar to the Half-Life RPG, taking 20 meters to arm. There are several advantages with this, one of them being the increase in realism in the game, but with advantages come disadvantages, no more rocket jumping. Machine Gunner The heavy backup, essential for laying down covering fire while your Marines and Rangers advance. If he can find a sandbag to rest his machine gun's tripod on, he can pin down an entire enemy squad. The engineer reloads the machine gunner's tripod gun. Sniper The ever-efficient TFC Sniper, with a few extra tricks up his sleeve. One major difference is the 'lag dot' has apparently improved over the network. We will be the judge of that. The sniper can blend into his surroundings as a camouflage, as long as he stays still and doesn't make too much noise. Commando The only class capable of destroying large installations, the Commando often needs protection for the few undisturbed seconds it takes to set his charges. Flame-Thrower The perfect class for cleaning out the enemy squads held up in bunkers and trenches. The flamethrower has a lot more possibility in TF2 compared to the TFC pyro. Shoot into the right size room and everyone inside will be burnt to a crisp because of the new "volumetric" flame technology (same thing that used for the fog and smoke) So this guy is definitely going to be a threat, much greater than in TFC, when shooting in or into confined areas. Though, the flame will not be as annoying, as in TFC. It won't burn on you for ages and ages, and you wont loose your aim like the snipers do in TFC. Officer The core of a squad, the Officer increases the morale, and hence combat abilities, of all his teammates around him. His IR goggles and smoke grenades make him the perfect class to lead an attack. A little Q&A was done to further investigate what how this "moral" system works: Q: I understand that the officer class will improve the nearby players speed and precision, but what happens when he is killed and the team sees it? Will those players return to normal status or will they drop beyond it (due to morale issues)? A: The players return to normal morale status. One of our goals in TF2 is to encourage players to move together in squads. We provide a lot of incentives to do so, using the morale system to make the members of the squad more powerful. At the same time, we try to avoid giving players any reasons to not want to be in squads, which would be the case if you were penalized below your normal level if your Officer died. We stick to positive reinforcement wherever possible. Ranger The lightest and fastest combative class, similar to the scout in TF, and TFC. The Ranger's the perfect choice to lead the charge against enemy emplacements. Dangerous when up close, he is often able to flank an enemy squad and hit them from the side. Field Medic Quite a useful team member. He can now not only heal you, but re-supply your armor. Even more amazing, is he can now revive you by performing CPR if he gets to you in time. Still, he can infect other team members, but his virus will not be as deadly as in TFC, or TF. Engineer (The guy looking at his feet, reloading ammo) The key to defense. Not only can he build sentry guns and fixed guns (as explained in 'weapons') but he can still build those handy ammo dispensers. His placement of sentry's and fixed guns will be very important as to the success of the team. Spy The infiltration and assassination class, the Spy maintains his ability to disguise himself as an enemy. He's perfect for taking out lone enemies and disappearing without a trace. A couple more notes on the spy, he will be able to intercept enemy voice communications, but he will have to be in very close range to do so. Also, like in TF and TFC, he will be able to disguise himself, however the system is slightly different, he dons the uniform of the enemy he's killed. (unknown if he can grab uniforms of other dead bodies.) And if he is not discovered while attacking, he will keep his disguise, so he can take out one or two stray people, and as long as they don't sound a warning, he'll be able to lurk away unnoticed, or join the main group and reek some havoc. Garrote Wire - this is the Spy's stealth weapon for sneaking up behind an enemy and killing them silently by slitting their throat. Spyder Grenade - How this bad boy works is unknown, (guesses are you take the view of the spyder to search around) but Robin had the following to say about it, "perfect for scouting out the enemy base." Instructor The Instructor's not actually a physical player in the game. His only function is to train other players. He sees through the eyes of his trainee and, through the use of a laser pointer and voice link, he teaches the trainee how to play the game. Commander The class responsible for the team's strategy, the Commander sees the entire battle from above. He has an interface identical to most RTS games, enabling him to give orders, set waypoints, use voice to chat to team members, and ultimately to give his team enough information for them to win. Engine: The TF2 engine will include numerous technologies all devoted to enhancing the overall gameplay, while allowing the lower-lined computer systems to handle the advancements. One such enhancement is the use of MRM Technology so that the computer isn't bogged down by the high poly-gon count by reducing the count at farther distances... Valves exact words on this particular enhancement: Volumetric Fog is a technology that can display numerouse impressive effects. The pic on the left you can see the affect a smoke grenade has when used outdoors, we'll see variations of gas grenades to, Gas, Smoke, Fog, Flames, and even explosions will all use the same system that will make them very effectice, and realistic. In a small room, when a smoke grenade is used it will be near impossible to see, and will billow out a door, down a hall, as the volume of a room dictates.
Interesting
I want this beta, then again I expect it would just be DODS with TF2 classes.

0:27 I love that. I remember seeing another scan around here, I'll have to dig it out from an old thread. It was a PC Gamer scan from 2000.
I'm so glad TF2 became what it is today. This looked really generic.
I'm so glad TF2 became what it is today. This looked really generic.
not back in the old days.
http://teamfortress.wikia.com/wiki/Team_Fortress_2%3A_Brotherhood_of_Arms This page has everything about BoA.
I'm so glad TF2 became what it is today. This looked really generic.
At the time it wasn't nearly as generic as it is today. What with all the modern war games around. Edit: Damn, Beardy beat me.
Invasion(the second build of TF2) is a pretty interesting read too: http://teamfortress.wikia.com/wiki/Team_Fortress_2_(Invasion) It probably was for the best though that these projects were scrapped. For the TF2 we know and love today is amazing.

Anyone else think BoA sounds a lot like what Battlefield 2 would eventually be?
as far as i remember, most of the stuff in the trailers and videos were just scripted sequences, no real gameplay at all
[IMG_thumb]http://i41.tinypic.com/9km7tu.png[/IMG_thumb] GENTLEMANNE OF SERVICE? I think so ps: click the image to enlarge it
I'm so glad TF2 became what it is today. This looked really generic.
This guys is right. Every war games are becoming the same except some of them and TF2 for me is awesome because of the comic appaerance and funny sounds.
Ah imagine how different times would be if this was released instead of the current TF2 and the Half-life 2 described in raising the bar was released instead of HL2.
I think it would be neat to have both this and the current TF2 (I don't know how, and I don't expect Valve to do it). This one looks pretty fun, but as said before, kinda generic.
I'm so glad TF2 became what it is today. This looked really generic.
1999, This looked phenomenal. We really had nothing like it back in those days. Of course i was only 10 years old then. [editline]08:12AM[/editline]
[IMG_thumb]http://i41.tinypic.com/9km7tu.png[/IMG_thumb] GENTLEMANNE OF SERVICE?
as far as i remember, most of the stuff in the trailers and videos were just scripted sequences, no real gameplay at all
Pretty much. Also, there's some strings in tfc\titles.txt from the italy map, as well as two other maps (war and doublemint).
Wow, that game still looks good to me. Only if they released it, then the TF2 we play today would be 100% different.
TF2 would have probably became TF3. But it makes you think, if Valve would cancel a game after all the publicity they had and media releases, they could do it again.
Pretty much. Also, there's some strings in tfc\titles.txt from the italy map, as well as two other maps (war and doublemint).
the textures in avanti and the skybox in dustbowl are from tf2:boa
I still want to see this in some form. Not even Battlefield 2 comes close to the features mentioned in BoA.
I want.
"We've got incoming" what :v:
I love the Commander idea. It seems real neat.
We know more about Invasion than anything else (from leaked source code). It's really REALLY different, and incredibly complex. For example, suppressing fire from someone would affect how accurate your fire was.
See once Half-Life 2 was released, i really thought they would base the next team fortress on the 7 hour war. That would have been cool.
Instantly remembered this.
Instantly remembered this.
That was really well done. Right down to the facial expressions. Near perfect.
If BoA was released, TF2 wouldn't have been centered around collecting hats :saddowns:
Even with the hat collecting tf2 is still amazing. Also does anyone else wonder why they decided to make tf2:boa a realistic shooter?
