• Difference between Blocking and Removing friend on Steam

Title says it all. If I remove a friend on Steam will they still be able to see me online/talk to me? Or do I have to Block All Communication too? If I Block All Communication does that mean they can't talk to me in-game if I coincidentally bump into them?

Removing him as a friend is... well... Removing him as a friend.
block all communication blocks all communication they can't see you're online (and can't talk to you / do anything) except if they go to your profile page, i think removing a friend on steam may result in her/him still being able to talk to you if you share groups in common (you have to accept a discussion invite though)

You have to remove them to appear offline.
OP, why are you asking this. Are you getting porn-spam messages from your friends?
Thanks for the insight guys.
OP, why are you asking this. I don't want anything to with them on steam ... in-game I don't mind because I can just simply leave the server, but I don't want them bothering me on steam.
If you're in a group chat together and you just remove him he can still talk through you through that chat. If you block him, you won't see his chat text anywhere.
Just remove them, chances are they'll be too lazy to go looking for you.
Removing them simply takes them off the list, you can still interact with them like normally. Including IM. Blocking simply prevents you from receiving communication from the other person. You'll still see the other person's text in-game, but you cannot see their text if they IM you or are talking in chat. They can't leave profile messages too. They'll still see when you're online/offline though.
Wait, I was at a LAN party a couple of days ago and I blocked everyone who wasn't there for convenience, does that mean they were probably still talking to me and just didn't get any reply? I had no idea it would make me look rude.

I blocked my long-time Steam friend and when I unblocked him it said we were only friends for a day. Just a warning if you care about such things.

The only way to tell if they are really online is to view their profile on their community page. They'll still be in your friends list if you two added each other as friends before the block, but for the blocker you won't be listed in their friends list. At first you won't take notice to it until you try to engage contact with the person. I have had experience with this.
If any of you guys are gonna block someone like a well known friend, have the balls and the courtesy to let them know you're going to block them. If it's a dick move to block them and not tell them or at least warn them that you will block them. Anyways, with the latest rendition of Steam when you are blocked, it will always show the person online, you can send messages, but they will not receive them. If you look at their page it will say " settings on this account do not allow you to add comments." Also, yeh. I necroposted. Deal with it.
