Yes, there is a thread down below, but the owner is perma'd, so i wanted to make a thread that i can edit.
Orbiter!
Orbiters a free space flight simulator, where you can launch shuttles into orbit, put satellites into geo-stationary orbit, go to the moon, go to mars, and beyond! Orbiter is very realistic, keep that in mind when you try to do anything. It simulates almost every aspect of orbiting, like gravity, trajectory, speed, height, and more.
Orbiter is a hobby of the author, so don't expect it to be updated a lot. Its really the community that drives this on.

Orbiter has a very extensive SDK, which allows addon dev's to make massive mods. Lets take a look at some of the mods.
Project Apollo:
Apollo 7 Launch "Saturn 1B"

The fully functional cockpit (all switches work!)

It also includes a virtual cockpit, crappy, but hey, its there!

Project Apollo is an open source Apollo mod, which lets you launch, and control every aspect of the mission. From T-60 seconds, to Lunar orbit, its covered!

Another great mod, is the Delta Glider IV, which is an improved version of the default delta glider.

the DGIV is a fantastic addon for those who love realism, as it allows you to monitor your crew, change the pressure in the cabin, it also lets you change the amount of oxygen, too. Setting it too high, can kill your crew, and sometimes knock them out.

Doug' makes very great spacecraft, too, including the XR1, XR2, And XR5.

Questions? Ideas? Suggestions? post here!
I played this once. I tried to fly to mars. I believe ended up overshooting everything and flying past jupiter.
EDIT: Probably because I set it to X50000 speed and stopped paying attention or something. Wait, no, I remember. I ran out of fuel and couldn't slow down.
ive got it installed on my desktop an my laptop....makes a very long train journey fly bay trying to dock with the ISS manuel'y

o rly?
I played this once, and it was pretty cool, but it took me ages to get to the moon, and if I sped up time, I wouldn't have enough time to make adjustments and I'd overshoot it and gah fuck everything would go to hell.
May download again sometime.

You should, and re-try getting to the moon, as the best way is to PLAN it properly, and do a proper TLI. Set the date to July 1969, and copy the data used by Apollo 11, if you can find it.. I believe you can copy it using the NASSP mod using one of the trajectory MFDs. (I didn't mean the real data, but if u can find it, then hehe, awesome)
I am utterly addicted to Orbiter.

Duh, it's a game.
Why am I finding it impossible to figure out how to do anything in this game
I love me some Orbiter

Jesus, compared to the textures on the plane, you'd think they could make the runway look a little better than something made in minecraft...

there is some high detailed textures, that's just the default. Remember, this game was designed in 2001, so don't expect it to be anything more than that, + some development into 2006.

If you understand how a trans lunar injection works, then you can easily make it to the moon from the ISS, with some proper planning on a Delta Glider. :downswords: :nms:
( love the emotes :quagmire:)

Take a look at that, and try it.
If you want to go to the Moon: Hypothetical Orbit, I haven't done it in a while but in lamen's terms:
Align your ship to follow the same Orbit as the Moon does around earth (In relation to the earth's surface map) You can set on an MFD to show a hypothetical orbit (I think it's called) that'll be a dashed green oval, extending out as you extend it's distance... There should be a yellow line representing the Moon (You have to have it set as the target) You want to intersect the Dashed green Eclipse with the yellow line, once done, you should be able to see when you want to do a burn for the moon, you stop the burn once a SOLID green line lines up with your dashed Hypothetical one. Also I keep my ship in Prograde when I do this
No worries if you did too much or too little, you, can speed up a bit or slow down along the way to insert perfectly into position, once at the Moon you can close the orbit by going Retrograde with the moon and slowing down
You also won't have the Moon in front of you (And 'front' relates to the direction you're traveling, not looking) for quite a bit into the journey, Moon orbits earth every month, and it takes about 4 days in the Glider to get there using this method, so it will move
Kind of hard to describe actually, now that I read that confusing hunk of shit I just typed
Oh the hell with it, you know what's fun, getting a shuttle launch up on youtube, play it, hop in orbiter (Make sure you have that soundpack installed) let the video count down as you're in orbiter, soon as they lift off, you lift off... the game matches up with the real life video and audio transmissions almost to the second, some of them even play at the same time... It's amazing how Close Orbiter is to the real thing in terms of Scale
Good tips up there
Anyway, it is quite fantastic from the sounds to the accuracy. Just total immersion. I wish all sims were like this :crying: :crying: :crying:

Never really got into it. Maybe should try this timel.
I could take off but could not sustain orbit, interface was slightly confusing, as in, the two monitor screens you get in the glider, which have 5 screens on them I dont understand as of yet (Well I know you use them to do inter plantery travel and sustaining orbits and stuff, just do not understand the numbers on them).
One of the MFD's should show, as you lift off, this solid green Oval that extends in length the higher in altitude you go, Going straight up won't get you into orbit, you'll go up, reach a maximum altitude before earth's gravity pulls you back down, that's the green Oval showing your path
Instead, you climb a bit, but at an angle, so you go downrange as well, not just straight up, by the time you're at the altitude you want to orbit, your attitude should be nearly 0, and that green oval line should be almost a circle around a white circle, which represents earth, once that green line completely circles the outside of the white one, you're in a sustained closed orbit
If it's a bit lopsided, just wait until you're at the TOP of the orbit, set yourself up into Prograde orientation, fire your engines... The BOTTOM of the orbit will extend out, Of course if you want to shrink the orbit (Bring it closer to earth's surface so you travel faster, used to chase/catch up to the ISS or Hubble) You'll wait until you're at the Bottom of the orbit, do a Retrograde burn, do it as many times as you want, just remember to do these burns at the Top/Bottom of your orbits, also marked by Solid and hollow circles on your orbit path
My orbit was very oblong, but still sustained, and my altitude was shooting upwards like a rocket, so I waited a bit to get to Periapsis, and next thing I know, my Altitude is dropping like a brick.
Apparently being over 2M meters from the Earth still doesn't let you escape from Gravity.

You have to be going a certain speed to get away from earth's gravity, else you just get pulled back, To un-oblong the orbit, at the bottom of your orbits, do Retrograde burns, it'll shrink and even out
I went and downloaded that XR2, very sweet addon, it's like the DGIV, only without the Do It For You Autopilot, and much higher detail

I was going to do said Retrograde burn, but then I get pulled into Earth at approximately 1000 m/sec.
the easiest way imo is go to the moon, as it is easier to get away from the moon than the earth, even though you are in both orbits, they are still weak.
Preforming a trans lunar injection isn't that hard if you have the dates right.
