• Tricking and Out-Of-Map in Valve Games Megathread v1 - "Stacking boxes like there's no tomorrow"

Let's face it. Half-Life 2 has great replayability but there will always be a point where it just doesn't seem to be as interesting as it used to be on the first few playthroughs. As I played HL2 a while back I decided to try something new for once. To set some challenges. To break from the boundaries that Valve created, and wander around the outside of maps without using cheat codes. So I decided to try a trick a friend told me about. And it's pretty fun. In this thread, let's discuss unique methods to escape from Valve map boundaries, tricks to skip certain areas of any Valve game, or just simply useless (or useful!), but fun tricks to do. My personal favorite tricks and out-of-map methods in Half-Life 2 are stacking boxes to climb onto invisible walls, and punt-launching myself with the Gravity Gun while standing on a metal plate.
the best ones are where you have to surf a metal shard through the air imagine gordon surfing through the air on a piece of metal
Half-Life is also counted as Valve game, right?? If so: Half-Life: Use tripmines to skip through the room with full of placed tripmines. Use tripmines to get over the wall, at the place where you just picked up the Hornet gun, on the long road before opening the army warehouse with full weapons and ammo. Opposing Force (Demo) Foxtrot Uniform chapter: The Demo will end when you damage the big monster, right? Try to ignore it, kill all the Shock Troopers. Get under that big peice of debris. (Behind the monster) Jump on the left debris. (A bit tricky here) Get on the roof. Now you can swim on the map. (You can fall down if not careful)
hl2dq was full of awesome shit in it, half-life engine has some neat tricks and glitches in it that not a lot of people know about
I remember accidentally finding that swimming glitch caused by new computers on HL Uplink (Since you can run around really damn fast on HL compared to older pcs) Found a few in HL. HL2+Eps is fun if using just props rather than surfing or launching. The area where Alyx gets stabbed you can glitch out of with just boxes.
Did that a long time ago. I also had a huge 30+ minute video of how to get out of the coast maps in HL2. I deleted it awhile ago :C
I use a SMG grenade to reach the top of the fence in the first video. Works wonderfully.
oh god someone kill that SMG model
It's tacti-cool.
It's tacti-cool.
Its 2 years old.
Another useful trick, in Ravenholm, is to stack boxes on the roof where Grigori gives you the SPAS-12, jump onto his catwalk, and from there you can freerun across Ravenholm's rooftops and go straight to the cart sequence.
I can't help but feel that Episode 3 will have a catastrophic shortage of boxes.
I'm sure many people found this out, but I've never seen anyone mention it and I found it on my own, so: [thumb]http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/469737224427236844/07D6FA9A85D9E90711A34CAAFF3A0659EEB4C950/[/thumb] First laser room in Portal 2, after the wall on the left falls in a little, you can put a portal on the ceiling that overlaps the wall, allowing you to slip behind the wall and into the black abyss. There's no way to return, but there's some non-lethal water you can swim around in. :v:
I can't help but feel that Episode 3 will have a catastrophic shortage of boxes.
Crates, now a critically endangered species with only two left in the entire world, currently kept in captivity. Specimens appear to be sterile and cannot breed. As a result, weapons and ammunition are now found in Russian nesting dolls.
actually, there's now a yellow sticker item that you can place on appropriately sized crates to turn them into ammo crates
I cant find a video right now, I know theres an article on it somewhere, but that one bit in Water Hazzard where you have to leave your airboat, and go through a combine base to open the gate. You can skip that section by throwing a grenade over the gate so it dislodged the rope (Or whatever it was) holding the gate shut. Quite a hard shot to make though. Then you see the dropship fly past and all these soldiers spawn out of nowhere.
Personally I always stand atop my airboat and shoot at the explosive barrel with my pistol to open the gate.
I the first fling room of Portal 2, if you hold your forward key, when flinging, you'll fly up to hole in the ceiling.
I remember how in HL2 a weird physics bug once caused the bridge in the crane part of Hway 17, the one you're supposed to knock down, to disconnect from the axis, and it fell down on the ground. Well yeah, no way across, game over, right? I called bullshit and used a grenade jump :v:

In the portal 2 coop hub you can get stuck at the bottom without dying.
I don't think I've ever found anything like this in a source game, though in Deus Ex HR, I stacked almost every single crate in detroit to get on top of the monorail :v:
Once I got trapped under the smoke stack that falls over in Water Hazard (I think it was WH). I sped up to try to get passed it and ended up under it. :v:
Mine is probably from L4D1 I loved doing this so much to annoy my friends.
one everybody knows at the part of half life 2 where you get back from nova prospekt, theres a part with a bunch of mines. if you stand on the metal plate next to the rebel and shoot it with the grav gun, you can usually get over the fence pretty quickly

Then the container (which was attached to the magnet) flew from left > right (Normaly it has to move slowly from right>left) and then stretch the bridge's physics joints to their max. Then the container was pushed back, killing the CPs, and the bridge fell down to the ground. Shame i didn't have FRAPS back then.

I found this a year or two ago; you can skip the Gonarch battle in Half-Life (quite easily): If you want to conserve explosives, I'm fairly sure you can still break the hole in the ground at the end by hitting it in the right spot with the crowbar like 100 times.

Why did they make it like that? The only reason I knew about that was because HL1 kept glitching for me on the final part and the damn Gonarch wouldn't fall down and die.
This actually reminded me of my video I have of getting outside of the tram in the original Half-Life. Crouching and moving forward is all you have to do. It's around 1:43 that it happens.
