I searched already but didn't find a Portal Megathread, I'm sorry if this belongs in the Portal 2 megathread, but I don't know anything about ARG, so I don't really know.
I know it was called an "Alternate Reality Game," but then it just looked like they added a bunch of radios or something, and then somehow you end up with these ASCII pictures. I haven't played Portal and don't have it [i]yet[/i], this just kinda confused me.
Can someone explain to me all of this? Why it's called "Alternate Reality Game," what it is exactly, and about the radios/ASCII pictures and their purpose.
An alternate reality game is a game where the actions of the game require you to do things in real life, like call a phone number and talk to someone or go to a real location and find something left there.
The radios added to the game played some strange sounds, many of which decoded in to slow-scan television (SSTV) pictures. In these sounds, one could decipher the phone number of a BBS, which was a kind of early message board system from the 1980s that you could dial your modem into. If you cracked the code of the pictures, dialed into the BBS, and logged in, you could acquire several things, such as ASCII versions of Portal 2 concept art and screenshots and BASIC code that read pictures that hinted at Portal 2's co-op mode (or would have had Game Informer's article not leaked a bit early).
