So I was playing on my test my zelda map and my friend had this REALLY weird particle effect on him I have no idea WTF it is.

Isn't that an old texture for the Strider's obliterating beam thing? I think it's materials/sprites/striderball.vmt or something like that.

This. It was used in the original HL2 underneath the warp beam until they moved it to the Orange Box engine which, like EP1 and EP2, removed it.
I believe it was also used in the beta, although I may be wrong on that.

Reminded me of the Hoverballs from Garrys Mod. Anyways, neat texture, would surely give some cool effects, for a Portal map or the like.
A server-side mod on HL2DM has been using this particle effect for years. Nothing new, really.
