I just learnt of the up coming release of Napoleon:Total War, and quite frankly, was shocked. It is set for release in february 2010 less than 12 months after the release of Empire. I bought Empire and although its great, it does have the X factor missing that was in previous TW games. I just wondered what other peoples views are in this quite suprising release, or have I missed something and is it a Expantion Pack. The screenshots released look very similar to E:TW and I would feel a bit cheated if this was a full sequel to Empire. Is this CA's answer to the bit of a let down that was Empire?

They're releasing it less than a year after their last game! Boycott it, quick!
Its not just that, looking at the screenshots it looks like its just an improved version of Empire
inb4 L4D2 like boycotts
I'd much rather see CA release official modding tools and revise their patch schedule. Even Hearts of Iron III was more buggy than Empire Total War 1.00 and the patches arrived in the next few days.
I must say that out of the Total Wars, Empire was the one I liked the least, it might be because of the factions having very similar troops, or something else, I don't really know.
I was looking for more Editor tools too. The curent maps on custom battle are lame, and no decent mods can be released, as no new units can be made!
I don't like the lack of custom options in the 'custom' battles ( like limited money) and the lack of other options in the campaign
it will be shit just like etw
they shouldn't of gone past 1500

to me it just didn't feel like a total war game
it was boring
I liked Rome total war the best.
Guns kinda ruined it.
UPDATE: Just found out that it is officialy a 'Standalone Exspansion' to E:TW (or Expandalone!) and I hope because of this it will not be sold as a Full price Sequel. Other wise I am quite excited about this release, and cannot wait to beat up those French as Lord Wellington himself in my favourite War era of all time!

I wouldnt buy it, you would play as the french so you would lose every battle. Whats the point?
You get to play as Sharpe and snipe Frenchies half a mile away with your Baker rifle
tac error, Now that I would Love! riflemen will win the day! maybe you get to eat the drummer boys as hagman :) (mentioned In Sharpe's Waterloo movie)
And The Rifleman, According to the description you can fight against the French.
How is IS Napoleon, anyway?
Smurfy what do you mean??? (sorry if I am Being dumb)
the "dewd" has no source, howd'we know it's not an expansion (yeah, they exitst too, funny how that works eh?)

see that what happens when i do not read thraeds
It is indeed an expansion, which is good, because that should also mean a nice big patch full of bug fixes.
Personally, I'm anxiously awaiting a '20th century' total war. That would be incredible.

I doubt that will happen, the latest I think Total war will go is 1880/90, if they go further than napoleonic times anyway. In the 20th century tactics changed so rapidly that for the whole period you could possibly need 2 different game engines
It was pretty obvious this was going to be the expansion. As for a 20th century TW, I can't see it working.

It wouldn't fit the total war style. It is all about huge amounts of men and formations. I think the Napoleonic era is the latest they could go.

With 20th century warfare, the engagement ranges and the insane micromangement involved wouldn't be suitable for CA's style of large formation-based battles.
If you want a Total War game set in the modern era, take a look at Order of War.
Only problem is with this is that battles like waterloo involved well over 100 thousand soldiers, so I guess they'll need to scale it back a lot.

Or we could just lower the graphics down to Shogun levels.
Not very likely however.

all the soldiers like cardboard cutouts?

More like they'll scale down the battle to just 1500 men.
Speaking of Napoleonic games, not even CA can come close to the depth and realism of this upcoming wargame. Instead of commanding your troops on an overhead view, you play through the view of a colonel, with the need of messengers to bring the orders to your subordinates and all that!
God damn it, what happened to the multiplayer campaign? I'm so pissed off that they still haven't included that.
It's delayed so it will come in a patch a week after Episode 3's release.

In Valve time, that's shortly after Duke Nukem Forever (after the fiscal year in 3-)
also it will have what basically amounts to supply lines (according to the IGN article (http://uk.pc.ign.com/articles/101/1014877p2.html))
I can see how a 20th Century based game would have to differ, but it wouldn't be impossible. I'd be personally intrigued to see how it would all work.
