What is Il-2 Sturmovik?
Il-2 Sturmovik is a world war 2 flight simulator, and probably the most realistic flight simulator ever made. It focuses on eastern front of WW2, including fights between Russia, Germany, Japan and to a small extent America.
It was released in 2001, but it's graphics were very advanced for the time and its gameplay unparalleled. The game features single missions, many pilot careers which include dynamically generated campaigns, and multiplayer support for up to 64 players.
Why should I get this game?
Well for one, it's most probably the most realistic flight simulator ever made, with every microscopic detail on aircraft being accounted for.
Second, if you buy it off steam, you get all the expansions for free, which adds tons more content. Four expansions were released for this game: IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles, Forgotten Battles Ace Expansion Pack, Pacific Fighters and 1946. I'm not going to go into them in detail but each expansion features new aircraft, more maps and more campaigns. With all expansions included, the game has over 220 different aircraft which all work, fly and fight differently, and about 200 missions.
This is one of my favourite games to play even though I'm so terribly bad at it and have only owned it for a week. If you are an impatient person, do not get this game, because learning it will melt your brain. It's unbelievably realistic, down to the tiniest details. An example of this would be a mission I did earlier today. I was fighting an enemy plane and I got within 200-300 metres of him and started shooting him. I could see the shots explode on his plane, but he kept flying. I kept this up and after 20 whole minutes I couldn't shoot him down (yes it's partly because I suck, but also because you can't just shoot anywhere and expect to shoot down the plane, you have to hit the engine or something else that keeps the plane in the air like one of the wings (which won't go down with one shot mind you)
Anyways, on another mission I'm fighting a plane from 400-500 metres a way so it's harder to hit him and I start shooting at him. One shot and it hits his tail off and he spirals down to the ground and blows up. As you can see mindlessly shooting at a plane won't send it to the ground, unless you're lucky. Dogfights in this game are really intense. Sometimes the plane can start to shake when it goes really fast and you can even black out from the pressure sometimes (in game of course...) If it's too hard with all the realism, you can turn down some settings to make it easier, although it isn't the same experience.
If you want to get serious about this game however, you will need a joystick, because it's a lot harder and boring as hell without one. The Logitech extreme 3d pro is a pretty cheap and reliable joystick if you're looking for one.
The missions are historically accurate, and there is even a 3 part mission on the bombing of pearl harbour.
All in all, this is an extremely accurate and realistic flight sim, and I recommend anyone who is interested in flight sims buy it immediately. It is available on Steam for $10 and it comes with all four expansions which is a really good deal, because you get a ton of content.
Multiplayer
Normally you can't browse servers in IL-2, you have to enter the IP address, so here are the instructions so you can play IL-2 Multiplayer.
Go to http://hyperfighter.sk
Download the latest version of HyperLobby
Run the Installer, click the exe to start it up and you'll be in the lobby.
MAKE SURE YOU CLICK "FORGOTTEN BATTLES" INSTEAD OF IL-2 STURMOVIK, CLICKING REGULAR IL-2 STURMOVIK WILL NOT WORK WITH THE STEAM VERSION.
Enter a username and password and press connect.
Once you've clicked connect it will ask you to locate the exe if you haven't done it already. For the steam version the path is "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\il 2 sturmovik 1946\il2fb.exe" Without the quotation marks.
Choose a server from the "Games in Progress" menu and it will connect you to the server.
Be advised, pretty much everyone on multiplayer knows how to play well, so if you're new to the game you will most likely get your ass kicked.

This game is amazing. Too bad the servers are nearly always empty.
Very good game. worth the every bit of the $10 and more.

Thanks for the edit, Dr. Horrible
i remembered this game, i crashed into a tree or something after i spent 3 hours getting off the ground
i remembered this game, i crashed into a tree or something after i spent 3 hours getting off the ground
Yeah, learning to take off in this game for me when I started was a nightmare. I remember rejoicing when I got ONE wheel off the ground, only to come right back down again and break the propeller
I would like to remind everyone that this really is the best combat flight simulator around.
This is probably my favourite game of all time. I started with the Original and have bought every one of the followup games since. The latest one with all the content is Il2 Sturmovik 1946.
I've also made some crash videos using it.

New: Climbing as high as I could

I never found taking off hard...but then again I've been playing flight sims since i was very little.
Taking off isnt really hard at all. Put your flaps in takeoff position, maximum throttle and use the rudder to keep it straight down the runway. Pull up slowly at about 200-250 kph and raise your flaps and gear. Although I probably also find it easy seeing as I have been playing this since I was 10.
Does anyone know a good server browser for this game? Because you can't browse servers in the game, you need to enter the IP. I tried hyperlobby, but it asks you to locate the exe, something which can't be done with steam. If anyone can recommend a good, stable server browser I'll add it to the OP.

Man there has got to be a way to use Hyperlobby because that is *the* Il2 server. At peak times there are upwards of a thousand people online.
I strongly recommend getting the 1946 pack retail if Steam will prevent you from using Hyperlobby.
Also, only the 1946 edition can be played online as the earlier versions cannot be patched up to the current version.
You should add info about Hyperlobby to the OP anyway. It is by far the dominant option, I'm not even aware of other options.
A quick tip while I think of it: don't fire at 400 - 500m, it's a waste of ammunition. I have my sights zeroed for 250m and I've been thinking of reducing it to 200m or less. You shouldn't need to use much ammo - if you're in a cannon-equipped fighter, one hit from the cannon is usually a kill. The whole reason the fighters are loaded with so many guns is so that for the split second you are lined up, you can put sufficient firepower onto the target that you disable it - not so that you can chase them around the sky spraying.

Wow...
that train crash at the end was the most amazing thing I've ever seen in this game. The fact that your plane was shot down, crashed on the ground with one wing off and visible bullet holes in the glass, only to end on a train track and get blown up is a testament to the awesomeness that can happen in this game.
Also, please add this clip to the OP, IMO it is the best movie made using Il-2 out there.

How do you reduce the sight distance? I can't even move the sights for some reason. I set the move sight left control for a button, then I pressed the button and the sights didn't move. I checked the controls again to see if I had actually set the control to that button, and I had. What do I do?

You should find the exe easy. The games folder is under (or should be) Steam/steamapps/common/*game*

Found the exe but when I put it in to hyperlobby it says it's invalid.
You sure you're using "Forgotten Battles" (right under IL2) and not the IL2 game choice itself in the connect menu?

Ah sorry, yes that is a bit deceptive. The sight controls are for the bomb aiming sight in medium / heavy bombers that have a bomb aimer position. They are relatively tricky; you need to adjust them relative to your height above the target and your airspeed, and you need to be flying very flat when you drop the bombs. It's easier to skip or dive bomb, but also more likely to end when a piece of angry flak lodges in your plane. I haven't ever succeeded at using the bomb sight to bomb accurately from height... I am terrible at bombers, basically.
Anyway, you can't change the weapon convergence ingame, but you can set it from your loadout screen. It's at the bottom along with rocket convergence and bomb fuse. I would say set it to what suits you, BUT, remember that you are in a plane travelling at hundreds of kilometers per hour and capable of very rapid changes in heading, so weapon dropoff is much more noticible than in an FPS and leading the target through turns is crucial. The closer you are to your target, the less delay in getting your bullets into their fuel tanks. I will usually fire at someone up to 350m away but most of my kills have been <250m, and all of my favourite / spectacular kills, have been from 150 - 200m. Another thing, resist the temptation to hold the trigger. Squeeze it in short bursts, as if you're trying to single-shot. The only exception would be bombers, since they are large targets and you really want to fuck them up as much as possible in a short time so you can get away from the insanely accurate AI rear gunners.
Eh, I hope all this doesn't come off preachy, I just really love the game and ww2 aircraft in general so I really enjoy talking about them.

thanks!
added multiplayer instructions to the op
I love this game. I have IL2 1946 and I use hyperlobby to play online. Hyperlobby always has servers with atleast 30 people on.
Is there a demo or anything?
By Default DEL, END, and PG DOWN are 3 levels of zoom/fov
Also there's a toggle gun sight view which will align your vision with the gun sight in the cockpit (so it's not off centered).

Hah yes. Most planes you don't need to do that but it was very puzzling in the 109 before I figured that one out.
Also worth knowing I think either CTRL + D or SHIFT + D, I forget which, but it removes the cover on the gunsight on some planes eg. the Aichi Val.
My personal preference is left hand on joystick, right hand on mouse, so I look around as if I was in an FPS. I have right mouse bound to a smaller (more zoomed in) field of view and left mouse bound to restore it to default, I find it very intuitive, although a friend of mine swears by just using the keypad look keys.
Personally I always go for full or near-full realism, nothing beats dogfighting from the cockpit and the nervous game of trying to identify approaching dots to figure out if they're friendly or not.

I'd love to have the game on full realism, but I suck too much to do it :(
Anyone know how to get the Unified Installer to work with this on the Steam version for mods?
http://allaircraftarcade.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8863
Instead of using hyperlobby you could, and probably also should use xfire. No hassle.
Oh and a screenshot i took a while ago.

Oh and it's not that realistic. Planes don't actually have many parts. Flaps couple wing sections and tail. Especially shooting someone doesn't look very realistic as just the texture changes until you've done enough damage for that part to pop off.
