Cave Story is a Metroid-ish game with RPG elements and a weird, but interesting story. It was developed by one crazy Japanese guy and release for free on PC in 2004. The game kicked so much ass that fans made an English translation patch for it. Now a remade version with new graphics and music has been released for download on Wii Ware.

Buy it and you will be happy forever!
FUCKING [sp]HELL[/sp] BOSS MAN, HATED HIM
And I wouldn't like him more on Wii :<
Huzzah!
Truly great game.
Be sure to take the time to get the real ending.
At 0:20. God damn. I fucking hated that piece of shit, I ragequit so many times before I could actually bring it down.
Make sure to not trade away the Polar Star for "greater" weapons, the Spur is the strongest weapon in the game.
I can't wait to buy some Wii Points to get this.
I bought the game. :D
I know that $12 might be a little expensive, but the original developer made and released his game for completely free, and after getting more value from it than many retail games, I feel completely obliged to somehow give this man my money. He doesn't accept donations, so it looks like I'll have to deal with getting something in return for supporting this team.
But, according to my friend, Balrog doesn't say "Huzzah!" any more, he says, "Oh Yeah!"

While bursting through a wall it seems :v:
I don't know about you guys but I think the older music was better.
This game looks bat-shit crazy. Reminds me more of Contra though rather than Metroid. I think its just the colour pallet used that reminds people of Metroid.

Depends on how you play kinda.
Is the new music for the egg corridor still an ear-splitting pile of obnoxious beeping sounds?
wish i had some wiipoints to spend

Cant you just get one of those Wii points cards?
I bought one today actually. 2000 points, im might buy this. How many wii points does it cost?
Actually played cave story for the first time a few days ago and I've become obsessed... but since I own it for pc I don't think I'll blow the dust off my console just yet

meh
Well I watched that 10 minute video. I saw that:
-Balrog doesn't say "huzzah" anymore
-The fight music against Balrog was annoying as hell
-Toroko looks dumb as shit
-Kazuma says "LOL"
The last one isn't so bad, and I'm at least glad that this game comes with the original graphics and music as options, (or so they told us during development) but I wish they hadn't fucked with the script, especially "huzzah." I bet some of the new music will be better, but I'll be switching back when I get to one of those parts with shitty songs.
And at least there's always the PC version to fall back on, but it'll be fun to see a version with enhanced (in most cases) graphics and to play on a TV with a classic controller.
But I don't believe I'll be playing this until May when I get out of school because my Wii is at home. Sucks that it comes out the week after my spring break, since I've been waiting since like 2008
It's a little disappointing so far. I think they should have left the script alone. Balrog not saying Huzzah is unforgivable.
I really liked Cave Story, but I found Balfrog too difficult (I think it was that boss battle... the one in the deserty place with the dogs that you return)
Looking around, I'm finding more problems with the game... Like when you play the original music, it's on a shitty loop that pauses every time the track repeats, or some songs that have an intro and then repeat after a certain time now repeat the intro every time.
I hear one of the offenders with this is Oppression, one of the best songs of the game.

Also, even though the developers went all rabid-weeaboo all over the script (MUST DO HONOR TO PIXEL-SAN'S ARTISTIC VISION) it is reported to be riddled with typos and grammatical/spelling errors, in addition to making changes like having Balrog say "Oh yeah" and changing Grasstown to Bushlands, since that was ever so critical to the script.
Just one question.
and changing Grasstown to Bushlands, since that was ever so critical to the script.
why in the hell would they do that
i mean
they mean LITERALLY the same thing and are made up of the same classification of words
What, GRASSTOWN translates to BUSHLANDS in English? Bullshit! Why did they bastardize my favorite indie game of all time noooooo
rabit dies
Ugh, I knew people would whine about the translation. I thought it was just fine, and most of the changes mean the exact same God damn thing as the fan translation. Grasstown? Bushlands? Same fucking thing. I think Bushlands fits better considering the area consists of grassy fields full of monsters. And most important to consider is the fact that Nicalis had direct communication with Pixel throughout the project. The fan translation version did not. If anything, the new version has the most merit.
Seriously, some of you are even whining that Balrog says "Oh yeah!" instead of "Huzzah!" Really? It means the same fucking thing, and at least Nicalis didn't rip off the fan translation and did their own damn work. I commend them for actually putting effort into this game instead of direct porting it.
I'm currently playing through in Curly Brace mode and I have to say I really like the job they did. Curly mode is NOT a simple sprite swap; she actually has dialog added into those times where Quote was asked questions or would've said something, and the other characters' dialog is modified to fit her better (i.e. "Where's your quiet friend" or the use of "she/her"). Really nice touches.
I am honored to finally be able to give Pixel some cash for this game that I've enjoyed for years. It really is worth the money and its high quality surpasses a lot of retail games.
NOT RELEASED IN ITALY YET

Motherfucking awesome game. Cried manly tears when the [sp]girl died.[/sp]

The other stuff I don't mind, but this is my biggest problem. Nobody had "huzzah" as a catch phrase before this (to my knowledge) but now because they changed it to "oh yeah" people just think it's a pop culture reference to the kool-aid man or Randy Savage, and regardless of how funny it might be, it's not as good as something unique. Plus, those pop culture references stopped being funny in the 90s
I played through cave story in Japanese so I don't care much that they messed with the script I am buying this
Wait, it's nintendo. Have they reduced the difficulty level down to "autistic five-year old"?
[editline]01:11PM[/editline]
I hope not I'm buying it anyway
You guys are forgetting that the ORIGINAL translations were not 100% correct. The Wii version has exact translations. Balrog saying "Huzzah!" was just something funny they replaced "Oh yeah!" with. "Oh yeah!" is the real translation. Same with GrassTown/Bushlands.
Personally, I think this version is completely ruined. They put really loud footsteps, made the text scrolling sound more annoying, butchered the music(I put it back on original after) and the new graphics hardly look different. The dialogue was funny when it wasn't exact, as well.
The PC/PSP version is superior in every way. Especially the PSP version seeing how it's portable. Just because the Wii version isn't free doesn't mean it's better. I mean, Pixel Studios didn't even have anything to do with this, and Nicalis gets all the money. Nicalis is the company responsible for butchering everything.
Also, the Curly Brace mode hardly has any differences. Only a tiny bit of dialogue. It's disappointing in my opinion.
Was excited to hear about this.
Not so much anymore. Is it true that they put Quote in a yellow outfit? If so then fuck that shit.
I have a friend who is avid about not playing PC games, for literally no reason. Spent years trying to get him to try cave story each time reaching a astounding "NONONONO BAWW". He finally got to play it and the first thing he said was "Why did they make a character ripping off the koolaid man?"
Sigh.
