I'm rolling a hunter and I want to Know what, in your mind, is the best non-beast mastery pet.
For leveling, I think the best pet would either be a tank pet (Turtle, Gorilla, etc.) or a Cat, which gives the agility bonus.
As for raid comps, refer to the sheet below, as they all provide different buffs, but do the same damage.

Tank pet - Turtle/Beetle; send him to pull lots of mobs and AoE them down.
DPS pet - Raptor/Serpent; burn one mob at a time and send him to the next mob while you loot.
Gorilla has been my favorite for solo. Has Thunderclap for AoE and holds aggro decently
I use a wolf for instances.

All Tenacity pets have Thunderclap. Gorilla's family ability is a silence...

Whatever, I was thinking before pet talents when gorillas got thunderclap as one of their special abilties.
The best pet for soloing is more up to personal taste and playstyle. I use Petopia to help me decide on what I want, based on their special ability. Deac is right, though, you're probably going to want a Tenacity pet for it. As for DPS/instance pets, I usually stick to specific Ferocity pets. My Tauren has a devilsaur,(that she can't use, thank you Blizzard) and I think my Dwarf has a wolf.
...Although... I rather like that flowchart Deac posted, may have to start looking more towards that as I get higher level...
Get a ferocity pet and a tenacity pet. Use the ferocity for general purpose questing and the tenacity for tanking elites. I currently use a wolf and a bear.

sheet is dumb and retarded half that info is inaccurate
not all warlocks give the stam buff not all warlocks give +8% sd and no warlock worth their class uses CoT either so umm... yeah..
Turtles have the best tenacity ability.
Cats have the best ferocity ability

and

respectively
Second-best ferocity pet would be Wolf by a fairly close margin.
Wait what's wrong with wolf? I have been using one on my hunter since level 10. So much crit.
