:siren:HEY KIDS, DID YOU KNOW WE HAVE A FALLOUT 3 CUSTOM FORUM? VISIT IT NOW!:siren: FALLOUT 3 - A POST NUCLEAR ROLEPLAYING GAME Ahh, Fallout 3. Sparker of flame wars, arguments, and butthurt NMA fanboys shooting up merchandise. However much controversy it caused in the PC community, though, it is still unquestionably a pretty damn good game. Love it or hate it, I'm making a thread about it, so knuckle down and start ironing the creases of consolification out of an otherwise great game. Developed by Bethesda Softworks and released in late 2008, Fallout 3 is the 'sequel' to some of the most acclaimed RPGs of all time, Fallout 1 and 2. Set in Washington DC and it's surrounding environs, Fallout 3 takes you on an apocalyptic sightseeing tour around the American capital. Compared to Oblivion, it's closest relative, Fallout 3 has a smaller game world, but a hell of a lot more going on inside it, making it quite a bit more fun to play. Most of the locations are completely unique, meaning you'll almost never be short of a place to go. There are numerous quests, marked and unmarked, loads of unique weapons, NPCs, and even a few vaults to explore. GAMEPLAY Fallout 3 feels quite a bit similar to Oblivion, which isn't surprising when it's built on the same engine, but it plays rather differently. Some elements have been carried over from Oblivion though, like the fast travel system, and many function still exist from the other game. Your character's attributes in FO3 are defined by the S.P.E.C.I.A.L system (Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck), carried over from the earlier Fallout games. These main attributes govern the effectiveness of your skills, here's a list:
Barter - Charisma
Big Guns - Endurance
Energy Weapons - Perception
Explosives - Perception
Lockpick - Perception
Medicine - Intelligence
Melee Weapons - Strength
Repair - Intelligence
Science - Intelligence
Small Guns - Agility
Sneak - Agility
Speech - Charisma
Unarmed - Endurance
Nearly everything you do is governed by your Skills;

Barter: Trading and trade-related tasks. The ability to get better prices you sell, and lower prices for items you buy.
Big Guns: The operation and maintenance of really big guns. Miniguns, Rocket Launchers, Flamethrowers and such.
Energy Weapons: Determines how effective you are with Energy Weapons, like Laser/Plasma rifles and pistols, along with the [sp]Aliem Blaster.
Explosives: Explosives are those weapons that can either be thrown or planted, usually appearing in the form of grenades or mines.
Lockpick: Determines how hard it is to pick locks, along with what locks you can pick, the skill requirements are shown in brackets: Very Easy (15), Easy (25), Average (50), Hard (75), and Very Hard (100)
Medicine: The Medicine skill determines how many Hit Points you'll replenish upon using a Stimpack, and the effectiveness of Rad-X and RadAway.
Melee Weapons: Using non-ranged weapons in hand-to-hand, or melee, combat. Knives, sledgehammers, spears, clubs and so on.
Repair: The practical application of the Science skill. The fixing of broken equipment, machinery and electronics.
Science: The Science skill represents your combined scientific knowledge and is primarily used to hacked restricted computer terminals. If you are below a certain science skill, you will not be able to hack certain terminals, the difficulties are shown here with the skill requirements in brackets: Very Easy (15), Easy (25), Average (50), Hard (75), and Very Hard (100)
Small Guns: The use, care and general knowledge of small firearms. Pistols, SMGs and rifles.
Sneak: Quiet movement, and the ability to remain unnoticed. If successful, you will be much harder to locate. You cannot run and sneak at the same time unless you have the Silent Running perk.
Speech: The ability to communicate in a practical and efficient manner. The skill of convincing others that your position is correct. The ability to lie and not get caught.
Unarmed: Governs how effective you are with your fists, along with a few other weapons like the Power Fist.
Every weapon has a different Accuracy stat, which governs your chance to hit, and a Damage stat, which governs how much damage it does. Weapons have a health bar, and can wear out and break after extensive use/being shot too many times. Thankfully, they can be repaired with similar weapons, although the choice is quite limited. Thankfully, many mods fix this problem. Every item that you pick up (Apart from a few 'Quest Items', although there are nowhere near as many as in Oblivion) has a weight, and you have a maximum encumbrance level, which if you exceed, locks you into a walking pace, which is a lot more sensible than being rooted to the spot like in Oblivion. The Pip-boy returns as a device similar to the journal in oblivion, giving you a map of the area and the game world as well as cataloguing your quests, inventory, and stats. V.A.T.S As a homage to the earlier Fallout games, FO3 introduces VATS, a system which pauses the game and allow you to select a part of a target's body to shoot at. It then shows your character execute the shot with some bitchin' slow motion and camera angles. It may seem like a pathetic attempt to lbe like it's step-parents, but it's really fun, and never gets boring. VATS combat uses up 'Action Points', like the original games' combat did. Each weapon has a specific drain on your AP, and the Agility stat and several items contribute to it. Persuasion differs a lot from Oblivion, instead of the stupid little pie chart thingy, you get a simple percentage chance to succeed next to the persuasion option, which is a huge improvement from the Oblivion system. SOUND Fallout 3's soundtrack is excellent. The jaunty '50s tunes are wonderful to listen to, and their method of delivery through the Pip-boy radio avoids the feeling that they've been crowbarred in. The voice acting has improved from oblivion, you hardly ever feel like you want to punch the voice actor in the mouth, and the only recognisable voice carried over is the one of Mr. Burke, played by Wes Johnson, who thankfully did the best voice acting as Lucien Lachance in Oblivion. Special mention must go to the voices of the Mr. Handies, which are delightful. Liam Neeson does a very nice job of voicing Dad, and Billy Dee Williams does a nice job on Three Dog, although you'll want to slam your power fist into his head a few times after listening to GNR for the whole game. The combat sounds are repetitive, though, you'll much rather listen to the ambient sounds, which are pretty atmospheric. GRAPHICS FO£'s graphics are rather nice, but with low res textures left over from the console versions, you might want to download a texture overhaul. Being a Bethesda game, the animations are typically awful, there's no diagonal running animation and little character to anyone's walking movements. The conversation animations are improved from oblivion, with a new view showing the torso easing Oblivion's unsettluing crash zoom, and showing you the characters moveing their arms and body while talking, which is a nice touch. They still fixate you with that unwavering gaze like they're staring into your very soul however. The few niggles with the graphics prevent the game from being truly immersive , like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is, but it still holds up. People do look ever so much better in FO3 though, with new lighting effects and facial features (wrinkles, dirt, moustaches etc) making them seem more real. They're still ugly as fuck though, but at least it's not the fault of the game, more like the retards who designed them. The monsters look very nice, and some of the more disgusting ones even glisten, and the robots look and sound beautiful. the guns seem a bit floaty and unrealistic, but all that is forgotten in VATS, where every shot feels meaty. EXPANSIONS Fallout 3 expands on the idea of Official mods pioneered by Oblivion. FO3's DLC is a lot better than Oblivion's, though, and none of the DLCs feel like they can just fuck right off because they're completely superfluous and unnecessary. They all add some nice new locations, and some very nice loot, and since they're official, all the dialogue is proffessionally voiced, which is rather nice. Most of them do feel a little tacked-on though, but they're all of a generally high quality. OPERATION ANCHORAGE The first and worst DLC for FO3, Operation Anchorage is an interesting idea, but is generally absurdly linear run and gun action. You can't pick up any weapons or armour, and there are no choices or free roaming to be done at all, aside from choosing what you want to blow up next and what to blow it up with. Not reccommended, except for the nice loot you get at the end. THE PITT A lot more freeform than OA, and a lot lengthier too, The Pitt is set in ruined Pittsburgh, which has been take over by raiders, who use slave labour to make guns and ammo, which explains why there are so many working guns in a dusty wasteland 200 years after a nuclear war. Free the slaves of the town, and make an interesting but predicable moral choice along the way. not as much interesting loot as OA, but a lot more fun to play through, and the Auto Axe, which cuts through people's limbs with ease, is all the loot you'll want. BROKEN STEEL - SPOILERS!!!! Broken steel raises the level cap to 30 and adds a few new perks and monsters, while also abolishing the awful ending and allowing neverending free roam This is mostly for the console tards, as we PC gamers have numerous free mods that do that already. It also expands the main quest, with the BoS mopping up the remnants of the Enclave and the clean[sp]?[/sp] water being distributed across the wasteland. Quite a lot of content, it's unfortunate that a lot of the new enemies are just reskinned or slightly remodelled older enemies. Still excellent though. POINT LOOKOUT In my opinion, the best DLC yet, Point Lookout adds a steam ferry which takes you to the south, an area not hit by the bombs, and full of mutated, inbred hicks, who are unfortunately horrible stereotypes. There are also new weapons (the double barrelled shotgun is great) , bad trips, and a host of new NPCs to help or brutally murder. There are loads more quests, marked and unmarked, to do, and a large chunk of wasteland to dick around in. Fucking awesome. MOTHERSHIP ZETA You've been abducted by aliens, responding to the distress call sent off from the crashed spaceship in the vanilla game and they have decidedly less than friendly intentions. This DLC follows your (not entirely linear) quest to escape and to stop the aliens destroying the world... again, and will be the last official addon. New weapons include the Alien Atomizer, Alien Disintegrator, Cryo Grenade, Drone Cannon, and Shock Baton and new armours include the Gemini Era spacesuit and Samurai Armour. You'll be able to fight aliens and robots and pick up alien power cells for your alien blaster that ran out of ammo back home, and even encounter some other abductees along the way. Hopefully there'll be a Fellout plugin available after release to get rid of that fucking green tint that shouldn't even exist on an alien spaceship. HOLY SHIT A FELCHING VIDEO GODDAMN Zeta has ow been released! It's pretty good, but a little sterile and with little incentive to come back to the spaceship. MODS (!!) Being a bethesda game, the game is not without its annoying problems, but being a Bethesda game, there are a host of mods to correct them. The FO3 modding community isn't as thriving as Oblivion's community, but there are definitely some awesome mods out there, and the main reason why there aren't so many mods, that the game's set in a wasteland, also helps discourage the creators of awful anime mods. The popular ones are updated regularly with new features, and you can keep a track of what's hot on the Fallout3Nexus Top 25/50/Whatever. Here's a list of some of my faves: ESSENTIALS!

FALLOUT MOD MANAGER (You NEED this if you want to use mods. The launcher's data files menu is completely broken. FOMM allows you to change your load order, which is very important, many problems are caused by load order conflicts. It also allows you to install FOMOD files as well. It's not quite as polished as OBMM yet, but it's still an ESSENTIAL utility)
Fallout Script Extender (Due to the increased tech of the Fallout universe over Oblivion's, there is an increased demand for mods that do awesome unique shit. Enter the Fallout Script Extender, a adaption of the Oblivion utility, and needed for awesome mods like Enclave commander)
Archiveinvalidation Invalidated (to use custom textures in Bethesda games, you must add a line to your 'Archiveinvalidation.txt' file. This is a time consuming and annoying method of doing things, so Archiveinvalidation invalidated negates the need to do this when you run it, and it never needs to be run again! Saves so much annoyance)
GODDAMN AWESOME MODS

FallOut Overhaul Kit (This is the greatest mod for FO3 ever. It adds hundreds of new weapons and clothes, retextures shitloads of items of clutter that the big texture packs don't touch, improves the diversity of outfits and weapons among NPCs, completely reworks the repair system to be less retarded, toughens up enemies, retextures a few weapons and clothes, and FULLY supports the awesome Enclave commander mod)
Fallout 3 Re-Animated (If you've played any Bethesda games, you'll know how awful the stock animations are. This reworks the animations, making about them much nicer looking, and so much cooler too. Although the author hasn't yet fixed the fucking lack of diagonal running animations, this is still an indispensible mod. Dowwnload it now.)
SJMod (Operation:Sporktrooper) (This is a mod by our very own Spork-JuCt, which is his response to the FallOut Overhaul Kit, currently in beta form. Includes new weapons and armors, and is semi-compatible with FOOK. Wait what the fuck I didn't write this)
Mart's Mutant Mod (The FO3 version of Mart's Monster Mod for oblivion, this adds a host of new monsters, improves the faction relations system, adds better wounding effects, varies the size of monsters depending on their power, and generally makes the wasteland a more varied place)
Weapon Mod Kits (Allows you to modify your weapons with silencers, larger magazines, faull auto mechanisms, laser sights etc at any workbench. Utterly cool. You'll need FOIP to get it to work with FOOK though)
Fallout Interoperability Patch (Improves compatibility between FOOK, MMM, WMK, FWE (Fallout Wanderer's Edition), XFO (Fallout Balance Overhaul) and UPP (Ultimate Perk Pack). The FOOK and WMK compatibility is great, it allows you to modify the new weapons added by FOOK with the mod kits)
Texture Packs - Weapons and Ammo - Hi-Res BoS armour - Terrain Pack and Rocks Addon Pack - Megaton Texture Pack - Rivet City Texture Pack (These mods increase the texture resolution of the game and even redo some of the textures. Ths makes the game look acres better and not like it was shat out of a console at all!)
Type V Body and Armour Replacer (Wondered why FO3 is an 18 rated game but there's no nudity? Well, it's to please the soccer moms who can handle extreme gore but flinch at the sight of a bare arse. Anyway, this adds nude females to the game, along with the dirty and ghoul textures, and it also replaces the armour with versions that fit the body. It's far better than the more popular Type 3 replacer as well, and you can use the custom clothes for Type 3 with it too, not that you'd want to)
Fellout (This mod gets rid of the horrible green tint on everything in the game, which is probably supposed to be dust, which would have 'Fellout' of the sky after 200 years. This may not seem like a big change, but it really changes the game's aesthetic, and I think it looks quite nice)
Project Beauty (This mod may seem like a bad concept, but it's really good. It's original intention was to make all the female NPCs look better, which is fine, because nearly all of them looked utterly shit. It does this with aplomb, although it doesn't seem to be able to wipe out Moira's ugliness. It has branched out now to encompass raiders and male NPCs. It makes the faces fit the characters better and look nice while they're at it. Load it last in your load order to ensure it works)
Enclave Commander (Allows you to summon a vertibird full of enclave soldiers free to command at your will. You can choose where to land the vertibird, what units you want, their combat stance, you can give them move orders, get them to take prisoners, blow shit up, or you could just shoot them and get their armour. Requires FOSE)
Hair Pack - Saram Hair Pack ('What's this, Monk? Have you turned into a fucking weeaboo?', I hear you cry. Not so. While it is true that most of the hairstyles from these packs are ripped straight from that shit we call anime, there are a few decent ones in there which look better than the vanilla hairstyles. Pair it with an attractive character (which are fucking hard to make, mind you) and perhaps you won't be asking your Dad who the hell he screwed)
TROUBLESHOOTING Into each game, some rain must fall, but if too much is falling on yours, perhaps you should check out my FAQ: My radio keeps stuttering! This is a codec issue. I found that removing my current codec pack and installing the CCCP fixed it for me. I keep crashing! If you have FFDShow (most codec packs come with it) add fallout3.exe to your 'do not use ffdshow in...' list. I KEEP crashing! Re-read all the readmes for your mods and see if you can spot any problems with your load order. Disable all your mods and try again and see if the crash still happens. FUCK THIS SHIT GODDOMMOT I KEEP CRASHING WHILE LOADING If you have any texture packs uninstalling them or getting a lower-res version might help. The Gamebyro engine throws a hissy fit if it has to load too much data. If you're adamant about keeping your ultra-high res textures, then typing 'pcb' in the console before going through any door might help. My data files keep getting unticked! Get FOMM. My game keeps freezing when I click 'done' after I select a perk! You save could be corrupt. Try earlier saves until you find one that works. This could be the fault of fiddling around with mods, or maybe just too much saving and loading, I honestly don't know. Save your game in new slots as much as possible. If you have any more questions I could add to my FAQ, please, post them. Hope you enjoyed my thread, and I'll leave you with the message that the PC version of this game is far superior to the Xbox version, and if you have any sense, you'll get it, both for the improved graphics and gameplay, and of course the mods.
We still have a whole forum for this...
We still have a whole forum for this...
I know. However, it's about as active as the chick who weighed half a tonne and had to be airlifted out of her house by a crane.
Try putting the link in the OP and see if it helps. Here it is: http://www.facepunch.com/forumdisplay.php?f=141
I was going to suggest in the Oblivion thread a few times but i didn't bother, but be sure to put FOOK and MMM on the mods list :buddy:
Try putting the link in the OP and see if it helps. Here it is: http://www.facepunch.com/forumdisplay.php?f=141
Ahaha, I did that, then refreshed the page and saw your post.
Should I have gotten point lookout instead of broken steel?
i will reinstall this again when i get my mony so i can buy some dlc and then i will get some mods i will give this game a second chance becase i got bored a few weeks the first time
Besides Bethesda outdoing itself on the bugs, this random quote sums up my first impression:
Fallout is a depiction of a post-apocalyptic future as viewed through the goggles of late 40’s atomic paranoia, not some attempt at showing a realistic portrayal of post-apocalyptia.
Although based on the context of the E3 trailer, they were probably going for that.
God damn now I feel like reinstalling Fallout 3
How are the weapons in FOOK? Are the quality of them about as bad as the STALKER Arsenal Mod?
You should have some info about Mothership Zeta, it's coming out soon
How are the weapons in FOOK? Are the quality of them about as bad as the STALKER Arsenal Mod?
There's a stupid number of MR30 variants and I've never even seen most of added weapons in either vendor or loot lists. It certainly comes close to beating the variety seen in the old games.
Besides Bethesda outdoing itself on the bugs, this random quote sums up my first impression: "Fallout is a depiction of a post-apocalyptic future as viewed through the goggles of late 40’s atomic paranoia, not some attempt at showing a realistic portrayal of post-apocalyptia." Culturally and historically, it's very insightful, but it doesn't do much else besides smother any kind of development with 40s/50s culture and Cold War notions, all of which would have been destroyed by the war and gradually washed out by generations out of the vaults. The whole point is that what's left of the human race is trying to become a new civilisation by rising out of the ashes, not one trying to squirm back into its old shape.
You should have some info about Mothership Zeta, it's coming out soon
Jesus fuck I had meant to but I completely forgot. Adding now. [editline]02:30AM[/editline]
How are the weapons in FOOK? Are the quality of them about as bad as the STALKER Arsenal Mod?
They look utterly horrible without the FOOK retextures installed, which are available on the download page anyway, so you'd be stupid not to install them, but with the retextures they look pretty nice.
Besides Bethesda outdoing itself on the bugs, this random quote sums up my first impression: Although based on the context of the E3 trailer, they were probably going for that.
All the fallout games were based on that perspective.
Save your game in new slots as much as possible.
Fuck I didn't know that. I've been saving my game in the same slot since I started (yesterday). Thanks for that.
I'm giving my copy of Fallout 3 to my brother, after seeing what Zeta looks like, any optimism I had left died :froggonk:
I don't like that Rivet City texture pack, it looks like someone just rubbed alot of brahmin shit on all of the gray walls.
Fuck I didn't know that. I've been saving my game in the same slot since I started (yesterday). There was way too much performance loss to justify it. (Actually, there was only a tiny bit of performace loss, but my game crashed as soon as I changed cells near rivet city so I got rid of it. It worked, but it was too much for the engine)
Whats wrong with what Zeta looks? I think it looks Awesome.
It looks generic, I'm seeing nothing new, and if the main character wasn't wearing the vault suit you wouldn't know it was Fallout, same goes with Point Lookout. but that's just my opinion.
Whats wrong with what Zeta looks? I think it looks Awesome.
It sounds like it's going to be an over-glorified linear dungeon crawl a la Anchorage, a DLC which proved how not to do additional content for an RPG, let alone a Fallout game.
So what? Beth's just trying to add something a little different into the franchise, there's nothing wrong with that. They're going to have to work very hard to make that worth toiling through hours of shooting little green men.

Zeta is definitely not going to be their best DLC but I'm going to buy it anyway
