Decided to make a thread about this game due to the upcoming release for XBLA. I'm also sorry if most of this is copy and paste. It has already been summarized better so I'll use the resource but I'll add on to it as well. General Info Perfect Dark is a first-person shooter video game originally released for the Nintendo 64. The game was developed by Rare, creators Goldeneye 007, an earlier first-person shooter with which Perfect Dark shares many gameplay features. This game is also considered the spiritual successor to GoldenEye 007. The game features a single-player mode consisting of seventeen missions in which the player assumes the role of special agent Joanna Dark, an operative for the fictional Carrington Institute, as she attempts to stop a conspiracy by rival corporation dataDyne. It also includes a range of multiplayer options, including co-operative and "counter-operative" modes in addition to traditional deathmatch settings. Technically, it is one of the most advanced games developed for the N64, with optional high-resolution graphics and Dolby Surround Sound. This game also required an add-on for the console itself to upgrade the hardware - the "Expansion Pak" that upgraded the memory. This little gadget added more RAM. Increased it to a whopping 8 Megabytes. Shit was high end back in the day. Story As for the story it takes place in the year 2023 against the backdrop of an interstellar war between two races: the Maians, who resemble the stereotypical "greys" of alien abduction folklore, and the Skedar, reptile-like extraterrestrials who can disguise themselves as humans, bearing similarities to Nordic aliens. (Kinda like The V's) Maians Skedar On Earth, there are two factions. The Carrington Institute, founded by Daniel Carrington, is officially an R&D centre but secretly operates an espionage group in league with the Maians. dataDyne, on the other hand, is a sinister defense contractor with a clandestine link to the Skedar. The player is cast as Joanna Dark, an agent of the Carrington Institute, whose impeccable scores in training have earned her the codename "Perfect Dark". On Earth, there is an on-going rivalry between two factions. The Carrington Institute, founded by Daniel Carrington, is officially an R&D centre but secretly operates an espionage group in league with the Maians. dataDyne, on the other hand, is a sinister defense contractor with a clandestine link to the Skedar. After the raid on dataDyne, Carrington is held captive at his private villa by dataDyne soldiers & forced to tell them where Dr. Caroll has been hidden. Once Joanna rescues Carrington, he informs her that Dr. Caroll has been taken to the G5 Corporation headquarters in Chicago, which is suspected to be a front for dataDyne. Joanna is set to Chicago to uncover dataDyne's plans. In the process, she uncovers a conspiracy between dataDyne and the Skedar: the Skedar plan to steal an alien "megaweapon" from a crashed spacecraft on the Earth's ocean floor and use it to annihilate the Maians. After the G5 mission, Carrington alerts Joanna that a Maian craft was shot down near Area 51 & sends her to rescue any survivors from the base. While inside the base, she rescues one survivor, a Maian Protector who goes by the name of "Elvis". When the President of the United States refuses to loan dataDyne the research vessel they need to retrieve the megaweapon, they plot to kill him and replace him with a dataDyne-grown clone. Unbeknownst to dataDyne, the Skedar also intend to test-fire the megaweapon on the Earth, destroying it in the process. To accomplish their plans, an NSA strike team led by Trent Easton invades the air base where Air Force One will be departing from. When Joanna foils this strike, the NSA along with some Skedar in human form take over the plane itself, which crashes after an attempt to detach the Skedar transport craft attached to it. Having survived the crash, Joanna eliminates the president's clone, rescues the real president & regroups with Elvis. Due to the failure of dataDyne to kill the president, Trent Easton is killed by one particular Skedar known as "Mr. Blonde". With the help of Elvis, Joanna prevents the conspiracy by taking a mini-sub to the Cetan ship & causing the weapon to self-destruct. dataDyne & the Skedar launch a retaliatory strike on the Carrington Institute, capturing Joanna. Elvis rescues her from a Skedar assault ship. Joanna then helps the Maians launch a counter-attack, destroying the Skedar's "Battle Shrine" and eliminating their High Priest, thereby issuing Skedar morale a crippling blow. Gameplay It was your normal FPS, Rare built on the success of Goldeneye and added on. They left most of the elements the same. The weapons of Perfect Dark include handguns, rifles, submachine guns, a shotgun, rocket launchers, combat knives, grenade launchers, various explosives, and several fictitious extraterrestrial weapons. Almost all of the weapons in the game have two modes of fire: a primary mode in which the weapon is used in a typical fashion, and a secondary mode which tends to use the weapon in a more unconventional manner, such as pistol-whipping or proximity detonation. Players can carry an unlimited number of weapons, and certain guns can be used in duplicate, one in each hand. Unlike in GoldenEye 007, where the guns were simply dipped below vision during reloading (No reload animations), Perfect Dark's weapons all feature unique and visible reload sequences. I'll post pictures of some of the weapons as well. Perfect dark was built on the same engine as Goldeneye, leaving all the features the same. Multiplayer was similar as well containing game modes Combat mode (DM/TDM), Capture the Case, Hold the Briefcase, King of the Hill, Hacker Central, Pop a Cap (assassination game mode). N64 to XBLA June 2 2009 Perfect Dark is scheduled for release on the Xbox Live Arcade in the northern-hemisphere's winter 2009, but in December 2009, but it was delayed until the first quarter of 2010. The best chance is for a February release. Confirmed additions include 1080p HD resolution and an improved frame rate. June 5 2009, it was confirmed that the port would offer updated HD visuals, local multiplayer for up to four players, online multiplayer, a leaderboard system and run at 60 frames per second. As for the port i believe it happened due to the fact Goldeneye was suppose to be release on the XBLA but due to MS and Nintendo (If I'm right) couldn't come up with an agreement. It was all ready for release, but it fell through. Feb 5th, but it hasn't. Most people right now are thinking around early to mid Feb the latest. But we will have to see. But that is only scuttlebutt. This game is going to be released next both during the XBLA block party. March is the release date.
This was one of my favorite shooters of all time. I'm glad to see it still gets attention.
Same here, i'll be buying this on release. Spent many hours playing this game when i was a kid.
God fucking dammit I am so excited for this. Me and my brother actually just recently fired up the N64 and played a couple matches. Throwing knife fights FTW. [editline]03:25PM[/editline] Also I hope they didn't take out the ability to throw knives and other poison weapons into peoples corpses so they would spawn poisoned.
Best game ever.
best game ever.
yes!
It was announced a while ago, but I can't fucking WAIT to play this online.
This is one of those time I wish I had a 360.
This is one of those time I wish I had a 360.
save up your money dude, with or without perfect dark, it's worth it.
I can´t find the right words to describe how awesome this game is.
Best game ever.
There they are!
Best FPS ever.
I played multiplayer with bots all the time back in the day.
I want Goldeneye :(
This game was the shit back in the day. Me and my friends would set up a zombie-esque gamemode in multiplayer by setting a whole mess of bots with only fists and giving you super blurred vision every time they punched you. It was awesome. This better come out soon this month. It was supposed to come out back in December but it never did. Can't wait to relive the old days with this game.
I have many fond memories of playing this game, and it only got better and more varied when upping the difficulty. I remember when my brother took my expansion card and I couldn't do SP any more, me so sad long-time! I wasn't thinking of renewing my subscription to live but if this comes out soon I will without hesitation.
The laptop gun was the most hilarious gun in multiplayer along with The fan gun.
I can't wait to see what Mr. Blonde looks like, also new voice acting, or the same old classic stuff?
Most likely the old voice overs with a few digital enhancements. But i know for a fact better textures and models.
Woawo! A rerelease of Perfect Dark with a graphics update?! Pardon my excitement. This is good. Very good. I can hardly wait.
This game owns This and Golden eye
FUCK YES  a
Anyone notice Area 51, was slightly inspired by Area 51 from the movie Independence day? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbxwaHyZiWM 1:26 I can't find a pic from Independence Day, but the hall ways are similar to that.
Whoah whoah wait, it's coming to XBLA? Fuck. Yes.
My god, I remember running around with two Phoenix's set to their secondary fire mod. I decimated those MeatSims. :sigh:
I hope my 360 enjoyed these 5 months of rest, it's not going to get much now when this gets released.
One of the games I spent most of my childhood playing. Such an awesome game, thanks for letting me know. I didn't know it was getting ported to XBL. I'll be looking to buy it!
Looks simple and fun,I tried the demo and it was ok.
Looks simple and fun,I tried the demo and it was ok.
I don't believe a demo is out for it. You must be thinking Perfect dark zero.
What a shame that Perfect Dark lacks Geddan.
I used to love Perfect Dark, I may get out my N64 and play it again.
