On steam it is only $9.99. http://store.steampowered.com/app/1280/ Once you purchased Red Orchestra, Darkest Hour is free to download. Darkest Hour: Europe '44-'45 is a modification for the popular game Red Orchestra: Ostfront 44-45. Darkest Hour combines armored tank warfare, with very good infantry combat. Some maps may be small and be limited to infantry only while other maps are several miles across to allow for open country tank combat. Darkest Hour supports up to 70 players!!! which makes the combat very intense. Many maps are designed to simulate real events that occurred during the war, such as Omaha beach, Ramelle, Carentan, Arnhem Bridge (A Bridge Too Far ). Darkest Hour has been updated frequently and overall is a better product than Red Orchestra. It has more tanks, armies, weapons, maps, active players, updates. My answer is why not. File size will be very small except for the levels, so it can't do any harm. Most RO levels are less than 40MB which is low for DH levels. It'll bring something fresh to those who play Darkest Hour, but never Red Orchestra. Also those that are big into tanking will have a chance to use Russian tanks with DH armor code. Why not just play RO? Well this uses Darkest Hour parent classes, so you'll have the Darkest Hour features such as mantling, fire suppression, stamina system, wounding system, tank damage code, weapon systems, etc. Also you won't need to exit DH and start RO.
If you're gonna play this you better get on the 29th's server
I used to be in the 29th. It was pretty fun for a little while, but.. God damn. It's a lot to keep up with. Fun game though, used to play it all the time.
This mod is great and I think Mare Nostrum is good too but no one plays that one, are servers still populated on this one?
This mod is great and I think Mare Nostrum is good too but no one plays that one, are servers still populated on this one?
There's several servers that are pretty full almost every time I've gotten on.
As awesome as Red orchestra and all it mods are, unless your team is organised (which it almost never is) you will never win. Needless to say this game is really intense on a 64 slot server.
This mod is great and I think Mare Nostrum is good too but no one plays that one, are servers still populated on this one?
The good servers (read: the ones that I play on) are the 29th Company (50 player) server and the [JR] Tank 40 player server.
Here is a challenge: Survive the whole round. It is the most intense experience ever, besides storming the beaches or just the entire Brecourt map as the Allies.
Here is a challenge: Survive the whole round. It is the most intense experience ever, besides storming the beaches or just the entire Brecourt map as the Allies.
Done that. Organized fire and movement wrecks people. [editline]15th March 2011[/editline] That said, the suppressive fire effects are a blessing that vanilla RO does not have. Seriously I harp on almost every "realistic" FPS that this is a must have, since at the end of the day it is a game, and to achieve realism in an environment where players don't care about dieing, you must induce other factors that will affect their ability to fight back. The only thing that pisses me off in this game is the hipshooters. Oh man, some of those fucking assholes have it down to an art.
The only thing that pisses me off in this game is the hipshooters. Oh man, some of those fucking assholes have it down to an art.
That's how machine pistols are designed to work. Not hip-fire, but it shows how the guns fire in full automatic and stay relatively on target. A lot of over games have way too much recoil, DH focuses more on realism than balance. It all comes down to what map you are playing on. Berlin_Beta7 is 90 minutes long, but is very common for the fight to hinge on the last few minutes to decide which team is victorious. The Germans have to be very cautious about their reinforcements, if they continue to run out and get cut down like lemmings they'll easily exhaust their reinforcements and hit 0% with a lot of time to spare.
As I have to repeat over and over, firing at a target range is not the same as firing at moving targets in an intensive combat scenario. Hipfire may even be preferable in a combat scenario since you can get your gun into a ready position faster, but it's still not going to be very accurate. There''s some people who can hip-shoot you from like 100 meters away in DH.
Are there any active US servers? [editline]15th March 2011[/editline] Cuz RO itself is pretty much dead in the US.
Are there any active US servers? I think their server is east coast somewhere around Virginia.

When I tried playing with 200 ping all I saw was soldiers teleporting everywhere.
When I tried playing with 200 ping all I saw was soldiers teleporting everywhere.
I usually play with like 170 ping and I'm fine and have never really had any problems. I mostly play RO and only hop onto Darkest Hour for tank action. The game just seems like it sucks the USA's cock when it comes to infantry. M1 Garand vs. Kar98k. I really cant blame the game though.

I play a lot on 29th even though I'm in Europe. RO is probably the best FPS out there, I love the realism and the immersive feeling.

Germans need to counter by focusing on supporting their MG42. Good luck getting that to happen on a public server but. Literally a well supported MG42 is death incarnate. That thing just fucking BZZTTT BZZZXTTTTT BZZZTT no more apple pie
In Darkest Hour the MG42 can easily kill infantry at any range, if you can see them you can kill them. Fire in quick bursts no longer than 1 second, the high rate of fire gives you a great chance of hitting your target. The way the gun recoils try to put the ironsight on the lower portion of your target, use low mouse sensitivity, and pull down as you shoot to compensate. It's very important to make sure you that you lead your target if they are running left or right, Darkest Hour has projectiles fired from guns, not lasers like CS:S. I've easily gotten 70+ kills and a few deaths with it. One skilled MG can greatly effect the outcome, couple that with a good team and victory is a piece of cake. For attacking MG-34 is a better choice. The hip-fire is very handy. When using the MG-34 at medium to long range, it's better to right click and single shot, the drums magazines only hold 50 rounds and tend to cause the user to reload a lot. Single shot does a great job of conserving ammo and with practice is extremely accurate down range, more accurate than burst. The ironsight on it is a bit annoying though, it tends to block your view such as windows and can cause you to get killed. MG-42 has much less obstruction in your view.

People always seem to want to play the really imbalanced and therefore shit for one team maps in this. So 25 guys get to have about 10 minutes of fun before the other team starts to leave out of frustration. [editline]17th March 2011[/editline] Its the problem with the map vote thing that most servers have.

Media release #10 for the next update has been posted. http://www.darkesthourgame.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=frontpage&Itemid=53
Major update. This may come as a huge surprise to some of you. I also updated the first post, hopefully to pull in some new players. Please help me keep this thread going because this game is great, don't let the graphics fool you because the gameplay is topnotch. The weapons handle great, even machine pistols can pick off the enemy at range.
I should probably reinstall this. Way better than that piece of crap called Heroes of Stalingrad.
I thought there was an update to Darkest Hour and was confused as hell, knew already about the new game but didn't know it was based on the British and Canadian battles so I'm looking forward to seeing what they do.
I should probably reinstall this. Way better than that piece of crap called Heroes of Stalingrad.
Download the beta, there's the game you originally bought.
