I'm a BIG fan of sandbox games, and i don't wanna pay for them.
I have Garry's Mod, but it keeps crashing all the time.

To be honest, Melon, he didn't ask for some stupid gimmick reply.
For content, perhaps Gmod 9 will work. Phun and Powder Toy are good choices, but you should check out OE-Cake as well. Fluid simulation.

Well, I suggest people should ignore that guy who tries being cool telling us to get a life and keep the topic on rails.
Sauerbraten and Platinum Arts Sandbox are pretty much the same editor with different textures and items. If you are looking for something more mature, look for Sauerbraten.
If you can get along with a rather complex interface (complex in the way you won't make awesome stuff the first time you use it), I suggest you Endorphin. There's a free beginner edition that really worths the try, and it's really cool messing up with lots of ragdolls and physics and shit. Sadly its graphics are really simple and you won't be able to make really awesome stuff with it (if you have a good computer and patience you can still create some good things anyway).
If you want games where you must change your environment, modify it, etc, try cortex command (you can dig underground etc) and of course minecraft, even though the only free version is the creative one and it's far from being as interesting as the actual survival mod (which is really low priced).
These, along with Phun, powdertoy (these two were already quoted) and the awesome OEcake (mess with physics, fluids, material mixing, etc), are the best sandbox game I know.
Now, with the ones that will need from you a little fee. Garry's mod 10, of course, Minecraft's survival mode, Cortex Command "premium" or whatever, but also a game that is not out yet but will surely get your attention (and will be sold at a very low price), From Dust, a game where you impersonate God with all his power, being able to modify the environment at your will (move objects such as lava, sand, water, dirt, etc), create new ones, make tribes survive or destroy them, etc. A really good game to come.
Also, Super Meatboy will soon have a map editor so I guess if you like creating levels you will like this.
And I forgot, get the demo of Crysis out there (or the full game if you have it) and install the Cryengine 2 sandbox. It's free if you download the demo, it's powerful, and really amusing if your computer is good enough.
Crazy Machines 1/2? I'm not sure but they seem to involve physics.

Crazy Machines 2, how did I forgot to mention this one. Very good editor, the only bad point is that most of the editor elements must be unlock by playing the game and achieving specific tasks, which is annoying tbh
