So I played Galaxy on Fire for the Ipod/phone and now I'm hot for 3d space shooters. I googled around a bit and stumbled upon a whole lot of MMORPGs and 90's 2d games. I'd rather have a decent SP 3d shooter though. Any recommendations?
Freespace is alright
Freespace is alright
.
Freespace 1 and Expansion http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/freespace_expansion Freespace 2 http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/freespace_2/ [editline]12:05PM[/editline] Not played this one but i've heard its good http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/darkstar_one
Oh and Freelancer
Freelan... I just saw the post above.
Darkstar One is pretty reasonable. Starlancer is getting on a bit, but is also good. There aren't really any very high profile modern space shooters these days, alas.
The X games are pretty good and the latest, X3 Terran Conflict, is easier to get into then previous installments but it still takes a bit of patience to get the hang of it. But once you learn, it becomes a great game.

However, Shadows of Lylat (Freespace TC and then some) is gonna be free-roam, yet fan-made. Don't get me wrong though, it looks amazing. Others not previously mentioned? Well, most of the Star Wars space shooters are alright, I particularly like Rogue Squadron II for the GC. Well then again, what type of shooter are you leaning towards? Along the lines of X or more instant-action-based?
star wars arcade game. it's wireframe but w/e
I'm currently playing through Freespace 2. It's pretty awesome... Though it's not that complex like newer games thus very linear and combat only (like if there is any mission starting with no combat there will be blood.. Like "test the sensors" "oh noes what surprise, enemies!")
Oh and Freelancer
Why did this guy get rated Dumb?, Freelancer is awesome
Eternal silence is pretty good(Free mod for HL2, it's on steam)

It's a freeroamer that doesn't push combat onto you, but if you want to blow the shit out of things 24/7 you can do that as well. And the vanilla combat is good in itself but it's infinitely better paced and more entertaining with Combat Mod 3.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 Soooo old. But soooo good,
System shock 2 and 1

The most annoying thing was the framerate drops when I shot people (this coming from a computer that can run Crysis). Freespace 2 looks awesome. Wasn't there a fan-made remake or something? What happened to that?
Some weapons have strange lag when a bullet hits. Not with Combat Mod though.
Worse still, it was with the starting ships. :saddowns:
Star Fox 64, it's the only good star fox game.
Worse still, it was with the starting ships. :saddowns:
Yeah, the PACs. The X-series is sort of like Oblivion, it's good on its own but it's much better again with some of the mods you can download.
3D Space Shooter? X3, X3, X3 and X3 . Terran Conflict is the more polished, easier to get into version of Reunion, with shit tons more content than Reunion... Play without ever firing a shot yourself, and just building a massive trade empire, or conquer entire sectors with your built up armada, it's up to you, Definitely a long-term play game, don't expect to have a Capital class Carrier within a day... or a week But naming it, and having that same ship, still kicking ass and patrolling sectors your traders frequent hundreds of hours into your game, adds a bit of Sentimental value if you don't like that game then there's always Freelancer, It's a bit less alive and more linear though
Seeing a freighter of mine unexpectedly doing it's job always made me proud in X3.
X-Wing/Tie Fighter series.

If you don't want to fork out the new-ish game price for TC, Reunion is old enough to be really cheap now, and the Xtended mod is incredibly big and will really keep you entertained until you get TC. In vanilla TC once you get your destroyers and carriers you might be put off by the fact that you have no real power - ships that are destroyed respawn, and so do stations eventually. But with mods like Conflicts and Race Patrols you can build your own galactic empire and take over the universe, or help another race do the same.
It isn't really a shooter (I know) but "Sins of a Solar Empire" is a beautiful game.
Freespace 2 looks awesome. Wasn't there a fan-made remake or something? What happened to that?
Do you mean Freespace Open? http://www.hard-light.net/
Do you mean Freespace Open? http://www.hard-light.net/
Ah, I was under the impression it was abandonware and they released the source code or something similar by now. Thanks though.
