• How hard are mods to make?

So, me and 5 freinds (two are mappers, ones a modelers/animator, and the other two are damn good artists when it comes to computers. I am concept artist since im only good at pen+paper) are thinking of making a mod, mainly beacuse we want to see what we could cook up. We have been thinking about such a thing since HL1s release, which brought about the whole "ease of modding" feature into our eyes. We have thrown about alot of ideas: and the current favourite is a deathmatch style game with lots of weapons, since making something special and all would be hard for newbies. And we would be using source, since the GoldSrc engine is, well... Dated. So, do you think we are well equipped? Keep in mind we are planing on stamping out a weapon every 2 weeks or so over the course of a year or two, and I have allready started drawing and we have a decent shotgun beta model ready to go. Only problem i can think off off the top of my head is scripters, which we lack 100%. And another thing: are we allowed to use VALVe animations, or would we need legal consent and such? We where thinking of using some, namely the FaN reload animation. Awnsers, comments etc would be VERY well apreciated.
You should be fine except coding. Either learn it or find a coder who'll help. Good luck!
What about the whole VALVe content issue? I know lots of mods use valve content, but I have no idea if they got consent. Would be nice if we could, beacuse we would not need to make custom props like barrels and boxes.
have you even read the SDK terms YES YOU CAN as long as you do not sell your mod
Then how on earth did Gmod get rights to sell? Its pretty much 100% VALVe content! Also, rating yourself informative makes you silly. Have a box.
Then how on earth did Gmod get rights to sell? Its pretty much 100% VALVe content!
Valve gets 50% of the money from Garry's Mod
so garry gets 5$ from every sale, and total of 1million sales.. he's made 500k.(this is all guessed about the total sales)
Put it this way: If you have to ask how hard it is, don't bother.
You'll be fine, learn coding though as said before. Not as hard as it seems.
Then how on earth did Gmod get rights to sell? Its pretty much 100% VALVe content! Also, rating yourself informative makes you silly. Have a box.
Gmod is 0% Valve content, because gmod is just made of 2 custom maps, and lots of code
You'll be fine just dont make something shitty like this: http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=770156&highlight=Nazi+Zombies
Make sure you have a solid and innovative idea. Unless it follows a storyline that VALVe has already set.
Make sure you have a solid and innovative idea. Unless it follows a storyline that VALVe has already set.
Its basically Deathmatch with lots of weapons, as said before (lern 2 reeed hur dur). We have decided that slot 1 will be melee, 2 will be handhelds(pistols), 3 will be scatter (shotguns), 4 will be fast firing (assualt/machine guns), 5 is accuracy (rifles) and 6 is explosive (grenades and such). I will provide a full list of guns once we got some good model pics/art of them. We have gone for the strange naming beacuse some of the weapon classes are very generic, while others are specific. While the 5 shotguns are very simmilar, the explosive and fast firing weapons are all very different from eachother. The first 4 shotguns go from single brokebarrel to quadruple broke barrel, then a pump action that holds 8 shells. We are using alot of animation hacking for these shotguns, and although we have only got the basis for two, its quite crazy. As for the whole innovative idea, we are thinking of something, but its not going well. Using some scrapped HL2:beta code (a FP user messaged me and is now our coder), we have made a very, very strange system for weapon selection and such. Users will be able to hold 2 completely different weapons at a time. For example, if I press 1, my hud will pop up showing me a pic of the weapon in my handheld slot (eg, the "gangsta" gun). Now heres the strange bit: if I left click, it goes in my left hand. Right click, it goes in the right hand. Once holding the weapon, left click to fire the left gun, right click to fire the right one. Beacuse of this very strange system, there will be no hands viewmodel. Otherwise, you may have 4 arms at once! When reloading, the actual loading of the gun is done offscreen. Eg, with the revolver, the barrels will swing out, gun goes of screen, gun comes back ready to go. If this is a go, no iron sights. Sorry. At the moment we are testing this old scripting with the CS:S Mac10 and our beta shotgun, and it feels very strange, yet fun. We have not removed the hands yet, so it is really funny to see 4 hands, 2 CS:S 2 Gordon Freemans, onscreen reloading. Also, we are not even going to think about world models until we got view sorted out. Expect lots of clipping.
I know a friend who wants to make a mod and knows how to code. I wonder if she'd be interested..
Using some scrapped HL2:beta code (a FP user messaged me and is now our coder), we have made a very, very strange system for weapon selection and such.
I do not think valve allows the beta code to be used in mods(Even that one mod that is recreating the beta is not allowed). Not a modder, so no idea though.

It would be amazing if the original leak was still available, I mean, over 30GB of pure awesomeness which was never released or used(ish). I bet there's some real useful code in there.
That makes me sad :( But holy shit, how could they make so much content in HL2:beta and NOT put it in the final product? I want the Gordon kick back!
Email Gabe about it, see if it is allowed. Even if it was allowed though, he would probably frown on it.
I'm pretty sure Gabe said they don't care about the Beta content anymore.
I'm curious where do I go to find help in PlayerModels? I'm curious cause I'd like to know how or who can help make a custom player model.
You should see their posts on Moddb...
Holy shit guys they have dead bodies on the beach Oh em gee look at that level detail :O:O:OO
Does anyone know the answer to my question?
Is it me or are you making a game like quake?
Number where a weapon selection goes should be last thing to think about.
so garry gets 5$ from every sale, and total of 1million sales.. he's made 500k.(this is all guessed about the total sales)
if he sold 1 million and made 5$ from each one sold. Wouldn't he be getting 5 million?
Holy crap you guys are you even sticking to the thread topic? I'd like some help with my question for crying out loud.
What about the whole VALVe content issue? I know lots of mods use valve content, but I have no idea if they got consent.
if he sold 1 million and made 5$ from each one sold. Wouldn't he be getting 5 million?
Yes this man is indeed correct.
Gmod is 0% Valve content, because gmod is just made of 2 custom maps, and lots of code
Yeah that's why the two custom maps use textures MADE BY VALVE and the mod allows you to spawn models and ragdolls MADE BY VALVE and all the guns and animations are, you guessed it, MADE. BY. VALVE.
