You would think that you can just battle anyone you want regardless of their skill or team, but no, you have to EV train every single one of your Pokemon and if you don't you'll never win. It's also expected that you use the pre-defined movesets that websites like Serebii or Smogon provide. I battle people using Pokemon Online, which is a battle simulator where you build a team, adjust it's EVs and there you have it. I have my custom movesets because all of my Pokemon are based on japanese giant monsters.
But why is battling competitively so hard? Why can't we just battle without having to worry about EVs or IVs or whatever serious shit we have to worry about? Why do EVs and IVs even exist in the first place? I want to do more than play through the storyline, but it's so hard that I just ask myself "Why do I even bother?"
For everyone's information, I prefer the UU tier.
Because Pokemon wasn't designed to be competitive. Nintendo just made shit unbalanced.
And I'd think you would post in the megathread instead of making a thread, but here we are.
But I digress...
I like Pokemon but I'm way more into the "singleplayer" part of the game than online fighting. Its ultra serious business against people who either create their pokemons on (for example) a cracked version of one of the games and then use it to fight online, or just grind their asses EV training which imo seems boring as fuck.
And its not fun just fighting. Main thing about pokemon games for me is going out into weird places and finding out weird and astonishing things, like some legendary pokemon's cave. Man, the feeling when playing Silver or Sapphire for the first time...

Pfff I remember when I took a team of superpowered Lv.60's with weird ass movepools and a Feraligatr at Lv.100 with Surf/Strength/Cut/Whirlpool and beat the shit out of an ex-friend of mine.
Kid was a spazzing idiot though. If he had a console and a cod game, I'd put my fucking money on him being just like a raging 10 year old, except he'd get kicked in the face by his MILF of a mom if he sweared. Asswipe deleted my save game...

I endorse this message.
Had a few pokemons with silly moves like that. They would miss and end up dying almost 50% of the times.
Actually no.
Ghastly with Curse, Nightmare and that attack that puts enemies to sleep is the most powerful pokemon.
I beat the final 4 with a lvl 20 ghastly, or something like that. Had to heal up a couple of times because of curse, but I could kill any pokemon in 5 turns.
I used to play competitive pokemon in 4th gen, and it's not that bad as you say once you learn. You said you use PO, therefore the EV and IV inbalance is removed. As for the movepool, your own movepool could throw a wrench in the meta if it's effective. EX: a special sweeper Blissey could be efective if the opponent does not realise this and sends out their frail sweeper in response. Just Live and Learn and you'll get a handle on it.

Unbalanced or not, you can do a lot of weird shit even with normally weak pokemon. There's a way to take advantage of a pokemon that has super high defense and turn it into attack

Power Swap Shuckle, although it's generally bad unless you have Trick Room set up, and even then you only have a few turns to take advantage of it.

What happens when Hypnosis misses, having 60% accuracy (iirc)?
I play with my favorites. Could care less about EVs or better pokemon, though I do care somewhat about movesets. Anyways, isn't this thread kind of pointless since there's already a pokemon megathread?
*Cough*

Its like the entire OP.
I play for fun
Am I doing it wrong
Oh, and I was less than 10 pokemon away from 250 on the original Silver.
IMO, still the best generation because of tons of things. (opinion, so shut up about "no gen is better/worse than other)

Then you get hit once, then try it again.

Assuming you ALWAYS hit Hypnosis, they can just switch. Of course, CPU elite four are stupid and wouldn't switch at all however. Even then, miss one Hypnosis and Ghastly's terrible defense kills it.
Best pokemon probably is Choice Scarf Water Spout Kyogre.
The problem with competitive battling is you build an amazing team and make an amazing strategy but then all of your friends complain about loosing to you because they play the game casually.

I just sit back and laugh when I sweep with a stall team Shuckle. Never have I seen anybody get so angry.

yeah I guess that's why they hold world tournaments right

The game still isn't designed to be perfectly balanced. it's designed to be fun. Tournaments implement certain rules and methods of playing to make it fair.
And boring as fuck like most competitive any things.

I find it VERY fun.

I can maybe understand something like Pokemon in a semi-competitive environment because there's a lot more to it than most competitive games (especially the shooters). But I don't quite see how playing in such sterile conditions and with such restrictions could be as fun as trying to actually play the game without them. It would make it a lot more varied and interesting I expect.

Sure you could play without tiers but someone is just going to steamroll you with an unrestricted, perfected team. If you use the excuse, "I'm just playing with friends" that's fine but when it comes to playing someone you never met chances are they would be the biggest scum the can be and bring something nasty to the table. NOT FUN. Tiers and clauses put a cap on that. Restricting Pokemon to a level of % usage keep pokemon with pokemon of the same level. You can use any pokemon in the tier and tiers lower. [but they must be worst if they are in a lower tier] Generaly stat wise they are but they may the the right move or ability to sync with your team. Clauses keep bullshit from happening because what fun is having all 6 members of your team asleep?
I like the strategy side of it. Makes me think (predicting moves, switches, etc). But its not for everybody.
