Does headphones help on the battery? (any handheld device)

Headphones, do they help the battery? I'm playing my PSP, I'm in doubt weather headphones help on the battery or not. I'm not entirely sure, though.

I remember on my DS the headphones allowed me to hear on the lowest audio setting, instead of using the medium high speaker setting, and the battery lasted noticeably longer.
