• SM Arcade - Seeking programmers and artists for development team

Hey. I made a Source engine mod (HL2 mod) called Source Media Arcade over the summer as like a proof-of-concept, and now I'm trying to put a team together to finish it. I know for a fact that there are talented game designers that follow these forums, so I'm posting the info about my mod as well as the plans for the next version here to hopefully attract some of them. I am now accepting applications to join the development team of Source Media Arcade. Donating your time to this project will be a rewarding experience and I'll do my best to make sure it's a time-efficient one as well. We will be working on BETA 2 of the mod which will be focused on multiplayer and correcting design issues that were found in the first public beta release. There are a limited number of positions available on the team and only the best applicants will be selected to fill these positions. Thanks in advance to ALL who apply. My personal website is www.smsithlord.com. I am 26 years old and first got into game design when I was 13 by making add-on missions for Star Wars: Dark Forces. I am currently a computer science college senior and have been developing my skills in various aspects of game design since I first got into it.
This loooks very cool, shame the only C++ i can do stuff i learned at uni and thats only physics related lol. All i pretty mcuh do is make comics so am not much help :(. Although tell me something surely you will be running both the mod and the game you start so won't that slow things down?
You need Programmers and Artists, does that leave you as the "Ideas Guy" becuase if it does and your not contributing in any major way besides telling who to do what, then this thing wont get off the ground.
I'd imagine that with him being the only person, he'd want people to fill every role, even if that means multiple people doing the same job.

As mentioned above it's probably just too big of a project for one person to get done on a decent timetable. I mean, it depends on your definition of "ideas guys." Generally, I would say an 'ideas guy' is more of a guy who says: "I think it would be cool if a group of you would make X, I have no experience and won't help at all but have a great idea of what you should make for me." Anyway, best of luck to you OP, hope your project works out.
To johnT447 - Yes, the mod remains open behind the game that you launch, but it is in a sort of sleep mode that doesn't take up too much of your system resources. The performance loss is consistently much lower than what people expect (what you raised is the primary concern of most would-be users of the mod). It does not sit there eating up all your RAM. When you close the game, the mod usually has to re-load all its textures and stuff because they were un-loaded to make room for the game to be played. I encourage everybody to download BETA 1 and try it out first-hand if you have access to Source SDK Base 2007. To coco911231 - Everybody on the team is an "Ideas Guy". I am the project leader, so one of my responsibilities is to decide which ideas get turned into features. I was the sole programmer/artists for BETA 1 which forced me to cut *lots* of ideas out of the project in order to release it on time. Meep Moop is correct when he assumes that the project is too big for just one person to get done on a decent timetable. I am capable of contributing to every aspect of development, but as project leader I will probably be working on what ever aspects need the most work at the time (usually coding). Omfgplosion mentions multiple people doing the same job. This is correct, because realistically *most* people are not going to be able to pour hours into this thing like it was their full-time job. For this reason, design jobs will be broken up into smaller jobs before being assigned to team members. How the jobs are broken up is 100% dependent on the skills and available time that the team members have to offer. Tentatively I am looking for: 1 programmer experienced with Source engine multiplayer implementation 1 programmer experienced with Source engine VGUI 1 map designer 1 prop designer 1 texture artists 1 sound designer If 1 guy is able to play the roll of both prop designer AND texture artists, all the better. I just want to make sure that the team members are working in the field that they feel most comfortable with.
