Skies of Arcadia: Most Underrated Game of All Time
68 replies, posted
HELLO, FACEPUNCH!
Long time no talk. Miss you guys.
No time for pleasantries, on to something that concerns us all. Or me. Wahtever.
I have posted many threads like this on a few different sites, and have never gotten a good response to one of them.
And PLEASE, before you trash this, hear me out.

Dreamcast cover
My favorite game, ever, is Skies of Arcadia. I'm not kidding. I've grown up in the Golden Age of the Console, I've experienced such greats as BioShock, Halo: Combat Evolved, Final Fantasy VII, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and yes, Super Mario Brothers. This is my 29th effort and attempt to get any rise or response from Sega or followers. I expect it to be my 29th failure as well.
Instead of me pouring my heart out, and asking you to "pwetty pwease" make a new Skies of Arcadia game, or make you try to care with puppy-dog eyes, I'm going to try and show how it will benefit you as a business.
The game's American release was widely accepted for the Dreamcast. I remember when I first bought the Dreamcast, Skies of Arcadia was the first game I bought with it. I remember many of my friends doing the same thing. All of my friends thought the same thing: SoA was, quite possibly, the greatest game ever. But, eh, that's a small group of people with no power or hold over the populace.
Looking at the reviews, you can see that just a few thoughts of my friends and I are not alone.
(These reviews are gathered from MetaCritic.com, a site which compiles reviews of books, movies, DvDs, games, and TV to make and average, and show what people think of them.)

For all your reviewing needs
Games Radar, Gaming Age, GamerWeb Sega, DC Swirl, Daily Radar, and Hot Games review columns all gave the game a perfect score to the game, making comments like:
"one of the most beautiful and overall well-constructed RPGs..."
"The characters and the storyline are so superbly written, illustrated and realized that it'll be impossible for any RPG fan to not find something to like in Skies of Arcadia."

"Awe-inspiring to behold, deep, absorbing and epic to the nines, Overworks' sky-faring RPG sets a standard that will most others will never attain. You have been told."
(These reviews can be found at: http://www.metacritic.com/games/plat...20of%20Arcadia)
Other reviewers, such as Game Fan, Gaming Maxx, Antagonist, Da Gameboyz, Sega X, Gamespot, IGN, Game Revolution, CNET Gamecenter, Planet Dreamcast, GamePro, and Dreamcast HQ all gave Skies of Arcadia a score of 90 or above.
The collective scores on Metacritic, averaged out to give it a 93 by critics. Compared to modern times, the collective scores are better than some huge titles as Rock Band for Xbox 360 (score of 91), Mass Effect for Xbox 360 (score of 91), Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos for PC (score of 92), The Sims for PC (score of 92), and Team Fortress 2 for PC (score of 92).
And these are all massive titles that have received a 93: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for PS3, World of WarCraft for PC, Unreal Tournament for PC, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for PC, God of War II for PS2, SSX & SSX 3 for PS2, and Soul Calibur II for GameCube.
Halo 3 got a 94. So close. So close.

"DAMN YOU, MASTER CHIEEEEEEEEEFFFFFF!"
But critics have been known to be wrong. I know I've disagreed with a fair share of reviews. So, to show you that other people think the way I do, here are some quotes from people.
From Metacritic.com, Skies of Arcadia got an astounding 9.9 our of 10 on user reviews:

"WE LOVE SKIES OF ARCADIA!!! And... And... WEED!"
"I was warned when starting this game that there is a point in the story where the player finds himself unable to put down the controller and is compelled to play for maybe an eight-hour stretch. I find that to be true every time I play. Skies is the greatest game I've ever played. If you can't lay hold of it on Dreamcast, the GameCube version is a nearly-perfect port with added side quests and backstory (and faster load time). Anyone who has ever played an RPG should play this game."

"I loved this game! If there was such a thing as Air Pirates, I would be one. A Blue Rogue. This game had a lot of unsuspecting turns and events, and it also had a great plot. I would recommend this game to any RPG Fan, and those who love Pirates! ^^"

"Best game out of the whole dreamcast's library. Not only are the normal RPG elements are here but the islands and ship battles really add a lot of flare to the whole game."
This is the only person to give the game anything below a ten:
"I won't help for me to try and explain how good the game is, cos i can't. Just buy it!!"
How about elsewhere? Let's venture to IMDB.com (internet movie database) where there are forums.
Here are the user comments for the game:
(Can be found here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363595/usercomments)
(Note: Some of these are long: people on IMDB write a lot.)
"It gets hard to find decent RPGs... most RPGs you run across are mostly Final Fantasy... The series Final Fantasy is getting old. I found Skies of Arcadia to be a fun RPG and a break from the FF fanfair. Skies of Arcadia also has a great story line. Oh sure, the graphics aren't great, but the story line is pretty addicting and cacthy. It's also good to get away from the Final Fantasy series for a while. While other good RPGs are put in the back room, they still try to stand out. I loved Skies of Arcadia... one of the best RPGs I have played next to Xenogears and Breath of Fire 4. Skies of Arcadia gets **** out of 4 stars. "

"Originally released for the Dreamcast, this game has been re-released for the GameCube with added content and subtitle: Legends. Given a beginning length of 60 hours, the storyline is as unpredictable as expansive. Each turn will come out of the blue, while also being plausible (in the game's set universe) and mostly original. Some of the characters are cliché, but it's rarely a fault (some speeches come off as a bit cheesy). The gameplay is diverse for an RPG. Included with the battle system and on-foot dungeons is manipulation of multiple different airships you can use to traverse anywhere in the overworld. To spice up flying around a bit, there are things to discover, barriers that you can pass if you progress far enough, and some detailed towns littered throughout lands separated by land barriers and recognizable cultures. Knowing exactly what to do, I ran through it as fast as I could, and it took thirty-five hours, never feeling too long or drawn-out. And throughout the entire experience, it was actually enjoyable, and only one or two times did I wish I wasn't in one of the many dungeons. I recommend this game to all my friends (who like RPGs, anyway), and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good, long game. This is what I thought of when the consoles started taking advantage of the third dimension, and is truly a shame that they don't make them like this anymore. "
There's forums about the game on IMDB, too.
(Here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363595/board)
How about this one?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363595/...t/33980343?p=1
"Picked this up for the Gamecube after finding it cheap at an independent games store (I think it was about £14), and just hearing generally good things about it. I was slightly put off with the size of the thick playing manual, but read through it anyway trying to grasp the basics. Playing through it I wasn't sure if I was going to get into it, but within the first few hours I was playing nothing but this! The whole idea of an air pirate, kind of working your way up to getting your own ship to your own crew and exploring new lands actually felt great and is a rather unique idea I'd like to see more of! I'm not really a fan of turn based battles, but I could cope with this. The English translation was pretty good too, with some moments that made me laugh (one which comes to mind is Aika seeing what might be a ghost). It's just a shame that the game has to come to an end. I believe it's now become quite rare, so finding it might be a little difficult. But if you do see it then whip out your wallet and hand over the cash!"

"I have to play this game again sometime. It could be the most underrated game ever... because no one talks about this gem!"
Or this post?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363595/...t/50294881?p=1
"i've been playing it almost constantly for the past five days, i have had approximately three hours sleep, that is addictive"
Note: Skies of Arcadia is not a movie. If it were, Dimitri Martin would play Vyse.
Let's check the Amazon.com listing, eh?
First off, holy hell, do SEE the price that a new one is? $106.72?! That must be an error, but still, pretty cool.
(For the next section, I'll be using two pages; the DreamCast page <http://www.amazon.com/Skies-Arcadia-Playstation/dp/B00004WLVV/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1253120047&sr= 8-2> and the GameCube page <http://www.amazon.com/Skies-Arcadia-Legends-Gamecube/dp/B00007KUUD/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1253120047&sr= 8-1>)
As we can see on the GameCube page, there are 96 reviews, but still a high average rating of 4.5/5 stars. But as we venture to th-... Holy mother of God. 108 reviews, and a perfect 5 star rating on the DreamCast page? The 1-star review was some idiot who says:
"i have nerver played it but it sound fruity and to many people gave it a five. By the way i just moved to china from mongola. the people here hate me and i dont no y? do u no?"
And the two star review, the ONLY two star review on the DreamCast page has this to say about the game:
"ok, the game was really good, but at first, it is very boring. untill disk two, the story is very repetitave, adn also, you fight a bad guy every 5 seconds or so, which is really bad and annoying. if that doesnt bother you, then buy this, becasue the ending of the story is great and the graphics and sounds are awesome, but i couldnt stand these two major flaws"
I can disagree with him all you like, but the fact of the matter is that, hey, look, a negative review. Only one I've seen so far. And it delights me that his/her grammar and spelling is so poor, it accommodates the content of the post, eh?
Now, turning to the GameCube section, we find, yet again, a SINGLE one star review.
Here it is, in all of it's critical glory, the review (aptly titled) "A Kid's Review."
"okay, so i bought this game cuase it looked really fun. but theres a reason y it only costs about $20. it sux!!!!
it looks good in the beginning. the graphics r a little iffy, but it seems okay. then u actually have to play the game.
the battles are repetitive and pointless. u could probably beat the game just by holding down the a button. moving aroudn dungeons is next to impossible. even when u switch the viewpoint, the camera still ends up grinding against walls. this game will get on ur nerves very quickly. if u want a turn based rpg type game, go buy breath of fire. it has better graphics, u cna move, and it actually has a plot."
He reviews games on Amazon until his daddy took the keyboard away.
He mocks the things that make the game good, invents problems to compensate for his own lack of hand-eye coordination, and had probably been beaten by the game so many times that he decided to over-compensate by making it sound ridiculously hard.
Okay, this is getting a little annoying. I'm sick of seven-year-olds reviewing games. Let's see what some more experience people have to say on the matter.
Follow me, would you, to www.google.com, where we are going to search for negative reviews.
Type in "Skies of Arcadia sucks."
The first three aren't related to the quality of the game. The fourth one, though, says:
"One of those rare games that not only sucks you in, but pins you down and gives ... There really is no substitute for a great story that Skies of Arcadia ..."
Huh. Not quite what we were looking for, huh? The fifth result says the 360 sucks (while praying for a sequel) and the sixth result says "the new nights sucks" while the article is talking about rumors for a sequel. The seventh result? It has the only negative review I've seen so far of Skies of Arcadia. It's a troll on a forums. It says "Skies of Arcadia sucks." That's it. Nothing else.
The next two results praise the game, and either talk about how it sucks you in, or parodies the people who mock the graphics.

Fan art or not, this actually looks a little gay. Don't be fooled. Vyse ends up three-waying those girls in the epilogue
LET'S TRY SOMETHING ELSE, since that was getting nowhere.
Type in "Skies of Arcadia overhyped."
The first result talks about the game. Reviewer said he bought it and wasn't sure if it was over hyped. In conclusion, here's a direct quote from the article:
"I bought a Game Cube just to play this game."
That's exactly what I did.
The rest of the results are mostly from forums doing an overhyped/underhyped comparison. Skies of Arcadia made it on the underhyped list on all of them.
Let's try one more, shall we?
We're sure to strike oil with this one:
Type in: "Skies of Arcadia boring."
First result:
"The gameplay in Skies of Arcadia is varied between character and ship interactions. More or less, when controlling Vyse, the gamer treks through dungeons, filled with random battles, to reach a certain goal. Though it irked me that Skies stuck with random battles, they aren't boring in the least. The battle system is turn-based with a few twists, such as the building up of Spirit Points to pull off magic and special attacks..."
Second result:
"The most enjoyable aspect of Skies of Arcadia is the way the game flows. RPGs that follow the typical dungeon/town/dungeon pattern get really dry and boring. In Skies, the story, as well as the ability to freely explore the map, move the game along at a brisk pace. Even the dungeon expeditions move along nicely. You won't have to endure level after level of similar looking environments, desperately looking for the next save point. With this type of gameplay, you'll never feel like you're stuck in one place for a long time."
Third result: Technical help with a scratched disc.
Fourth result:
"There are few games on the market that have an equally memorable score like the one played in SoA. The different themes change quite often and rather encourage the player to advance in the game than to get boring and repetitive over the time."
Get it? I can't find a bad review of the game by anyone intelligent. I've looked. And personally, I'd buy any next-gen console to get Skies of Arcadia 2. If you made it for the stupid PS3, no matter how much I hate the Sony consoles, I would buy one just for Skies of Arcadia.
Why it's awesome
Alright, first off, let me just say this: the battle music changes on how you're doing. If you're sucking big time, have half your health, and the outcome looks bleak, you get the crisis music. Then, if you start doing well, you get the opportunity music.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fj34EB7Jz_M&feature=PlayList&p=18E61E8D25346B78&index=26
(at 1:54 the music switches from crisis to opportunity)
Cool, right? Can't tell you how many times I've been screwed over by some big baddy trying to knock me flat on my ass and having that music play. But, along side with the fact the music changes with your skill, you get an incredible score throughout the game. Skies of Arcadia has some of the best game music of it's time.
Take a listen:
The "You're about to get fucked by normal-strength random encounter bad guys" theme:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8EYbUY_NnE&feature=PlayList&p=18E61E8D25346B78&index=8
The "Your home town was raped by the evil empire, and it's your fucking fault" theme:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LPM9WjKxy8&feature=PlayList&p=18E61E8D25346B78&index=10
The "It's time to get tactical, motherfucker" theme:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktWgd2cMdnU&feature=PlayList&p=18E61E8D25346B78&index=11
The "We're the evil empire who raped your home town, and it's still your fucking fault" theme:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YE2ioAcjVKw&feature=PlayList&p=18E61E8D25346B78&index=20
The "Shit, dude, that thing is HUGE, but let's fight it anyway" theme:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJD6CYUfPpo&feature=PlayList&p=18E61E8D25346B78&index=38
And many more!
Another thing that's cool about the game is the battle system and Super Moves.
The super moves are attacks that... Well, they're super. They have a wide range of effect, from damaging one person a shit-ton, to putting yourself in a counter-attack stance. Vyse, the main character, has the largest list of Super Moves, and, sadly, all I could find in a high enough quality to list is the Japanese version.
The animations are the same, but the voice acting is different in the American version.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQkOLjRxvyg
Here's the American S moves, but in a lower quality:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCXqR8JvgkY
Now, there's S moves, right? Fuck some shit up, it's all good. There's also magic (Like, totally, like, original, right?) you can cast. It's divided into six sections: blue for water, purple for ice, red for fire, green for earth, yellow for electricity, silver for life. Each of those has elemental spells, as well as unique abilities. Now, I can't find any videos showing the magic, but I'll give you a quick run-down.
Blue (water) has the power to make your team quicker.
Purple (ice) has the power to confuse your enemy.
Red (fire) has the power to increase your team's strength and defense.
Green (earth) has the power to heal and poison.
Yellow (electricity) has the power to drain your enemy of their defense and strength.
Silver (life) has the power to raise one of your party from the dead, or immediately kill a lesser opponent.
It takes a lot of time to learn all the spells, and there's a system of combat effectiveness with elements. Your weapons are always elemental, so you have to change on the fly to beat your enemies.
There's a great story line. It's got moons, romance, magic, betrayal, and other cool stuff.
But, there's one thing that makes it stand out from everything else.
Gilder.
Introduction to Gilder:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apgbXG2DYzU
Gilder's fucking Super Moves:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aEedrrJwyA&feature=PlayList&p=4B3ED5E17DCDC129&index=13
This is one of the only people in the game to use a gun, so you know he's got common sense.
Gilder is Gilder, and worth a buy right there.
To sum it all up, this isn't pleading or begging. I'm just showing you how one of the most under-rated games of all time slipped under the radar of even the people who made it.
Thank you for reading this. I'm tired now. My hands are cramping from typing.

Very good game, none the less. This and Tales of Symphonia were the best RPGs on the Gamecube.

Underrated is just poor advertising. The only reason Halo is so widely-known is because of Microsoft's excellent advertising campaign for a mediocre game.

Halo was fucking incredible, it was the later installments that ruined it.
Where is the content?
What the fuck is this shit? read the first paragraph and then scrolled down, looking for colorful pictures of this "Skies of Arcadia" you speak of.
But all I find is more and more rambling.
I am disappoint.

Pardon, that's what I meant. Halo 1 was good. Halo 2 was mediocre at best. Halo 3 was a travesty. But people continued to buy them out of the excellent marketing.

Fine. Now adding pictures for the obviously illiterate. Give me a few moments.

I'm far too tired for this shit... Fine, videos up in a moment.
I remember playing this on my friend's Gamecube. It's a shame that Sega decided not to release the remake for the PS2.

I hate anime with a flaming passion. It's ridiculous, stupid, and often times, creepy. So there must be something done right in Skies of Arcadia.

So if a game doesn't have realistic characters it's automatically anime?
Oh no, TF2 is anime
Mario is anime
Legend of Zelda is anime
Older Final Fantasy games are anime
What should we do with all the anime games? They'll kill us all :downs:
This game was the shit.

No, idiot, a game following the art-style "manga" (Which is very cliche, dumb, gay, and unoriginal) is an anime game.
Legend of Zelda and the older Final Fantasy games would, infact, fall under that category.
Anime (アニメ?, an abbreviated pronunciation in Japanese of "animation", pronounced [aꜜnime] ( listen) in Japanese, but typically Anime-en-US-pronunciation.ogg /ˈænəˌmeɪ/ (help·info) or /ˈænəˌmə/ in English) is animation originating in Japan. The world outside Japan regards anime as "Japanese animation".[1] Anime originated about 1917.[2]
Japanese animation, not specifically an art style. Boo hoo a character is drawn in a certain way, why the fuck would it matter? If the game/show/comic is good who the fuck cares what characters look like?
If anything, you're fucking retarded for thinking something is horrible just because of how it's drawn, are you 10 or something?
Fuck, why didn't anyone tell me it was for Gamecube, too?

Think of it this way;- if it's drawn by Japanese people, then it will have Japanese shit in it.
And we all know how fucking insane they can get.
FURTHERMORE, the title in the pic has Japanese writing in it (or whatever).
I stopped at hydra the part where you enter the ship. I kept getting 1hit ko'd by random encounters. But i will finish it someday. It's too good.
Music is enjoyable too.
The only reason i got this game was because i saw it in some random game store folder and thought "holy shit pirates and ships, must be great". It's one of the few games i actually bought myself. Most other games were bought by my brother.
I could NOT at all find the game in stores however. Very uncommon game it seemed. But thanks to shear luck i found a copy at the airport music store while going on vacation to greece. I read the entire booklet while i was there. Couple times.

go smoke some more please. Join the cool guys.
I suggest the Gamecube Version only, it's mostly a direct port, with the added online content, lessened battles (main complaint of the dreamcast game was very frequent battles) and some minor censoring (alcohol getting a new name, but who cares?)
But it's still the same game, and on a much easier to get system.
