Bunnyhopping or strafe-jumping is a technique originating from the original Quake game. Many games based on the Quake engine conserve the movement physics.
In the original Quake, it is possible to control the player in midair by holding down the strafe key and turning to that side with the mouse. Doing this gives the player a slight boost to their velocity, making it possible to get around much faster.
With the release of Quake 2, the movement physics were changed. Controlling the movement direction was made much harder, but it certainly didn't make it more difficult to achieve speed. The movement physics haven't changed much in Id Software's later games ever since.
Many maps are designed specifically for tricks and jumping, requiring the player to learn the technique well.
Half-Life has also adopted the movement from Quake 1. "Surf" and "climb" maps have then been popularized in Counter-Strike.
Random gameplay!

I never got the point of surf maps, the first 10 minutes is confusion on what the hell to do. After that it's just holding down a key while you glide along a track, occasionally needing to make precise landings and such.
i was never able to do this
I can barely do css bhop. This shit seems hard as rhino cock.
Reminds me of an old game I used to play called SkyRoads

Quake Strafe Jumping is actually really easy to do, you just need to get the hang of it. I remember first strafe jumping and it took me a few weeks to get it right, now I can do 700+ as opposed to 320 (this is the normal running speed for Quake 3/Quake Live) and strafe jumping can be really fun. Though I'm no master, but I'm able to use it to escape tough situations.
However, I find it hard to strafe jump or bunny hop in games like CS:S. Quake feels so much easier to me.
surfing is kind of a different mechanic but since you mentioned it in the OP

you haven't surfed until you've tried copy-mark's maps.
I used to be really good at counter strike sources bunny hopping, it's a really weird technique and method but the method felt really expressive and was really fun to do.
Bunnyhopping in any Source game is easy as fuck, much harder in GoldSrc games.

I remember people voting for the first Lithium map not knowing what it was and then a ~14 player server emptying out in minutes after everyone realized they couldn't come anywhere close to completing even the first section.
Nice content OP.
Anyone knows a good Bhop server in css? with script <:D
Surf eh? Never seen the point in it. And the Quake jumping is certainly impressive, but I can't see the point in wasting time on it unless you're some really competitive Quake player.
I remember trickjumping in Wolfenstein : Enemy Territory

its about as much wasting time as it is playing any other video game. he does it for fun and no other reason
Strafe jumping is invaluable if you want to win at Quake; you're far too slow and spend far too much time on the ground (rocket bait) if you're just running around.
COD4 Strafejumping and bouncing is very awesome.

I wonder why the hell they added in players being able to change their direction in the air. It creates a lot of movement glitches. Although these movement glitches are considered techniques now, I just wonder why they would enable players changing their course through the air.
What about UT2004? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrRV3iFpR30 They where jumping like shit, i cant even target them.
They're just hopping in the air for evasion. You don't see them bouncing around at 200 MPH and then jumping forward and turning 90 degrees into a hole in the wall.
This thread is ten times better while drunk.
Well in UT2004 u can also dubble tap space or D,A and it give you a nice dodge.
Why does everyone use Pendulum for their trickjumping skill-related videos? Is Pendulum like hitting the "my video is good" button or something?
Ah the Star Trek Elite Force days when every single person knew how to do this. It's pretty easy once you know how to do it, it's like riding a bike.

Actually, I play most of my singleplayer games for the story. When it's an RPG, I make up things about my character to give him or her more depth.

CSS bhopping is harder, I think. Can't bunnyhop on CSS for shit but I can kinda do it in Quake (not like some of the pros though :v:)

Lol try playing Q3 Arena without jumping around like FUCK. You will die about 50 times and get like 5 kills. You cannot do well at q3 if you don't learn to bunny hop.
Bunnyhopping, strafe jumping, surfing are all fairly interesting exploits in the movement systems and physics engines of their games. I am surprised that it hasn't slowly been phased out of the iD Tech engines, most developers would see it as a problematic bug and try and remove it (I can understand iD leaving it in due to quake, but other games based off the engine have no real reason to keep it in).
But as cool as it can be to see someone zooming around a map at obscene speeds, it adds a false difficulty to the game. It makes it nigh impossible for a new player to actually be able to beat someone who plays for most of the day, who has mastered the movement exploits as you just cannot hit them. Plus the whole thing has been ruined by fucking morons (the CoD bouncing exploits have a following of "MLG ProZZzz" who think they are now somehow a master race just because they can get into a spot with no cover at all).
Surfing has always confused me, I've never been good at it, even basic maps are hard to me as I jut don't give enough of a fuck to learn how to surf correctly. That and almost all CS: S surf maps make me want to gouge my eyes out as they are so damn ugly. Those Lithium maps are probably some of the nicest ones I've seen, and even then they are bland and not that interesting. I know that isn't their purpose, but mappers could at least put some effort into detailing it, repeating textures are bad.
It's a really fun exploit when you get the hang of it and you zoom past your team and into the enemy's spawn.

Because it is decently paced music, so it fits to just about anything.
I wonder how Infinity Ward managed to take it out for their engine, its impossible in their games unless they have promod.

I think they removed bunnyhopping in the CS:S update. The update included the ability to unlock achievements.
Holy hell that first video, I mean do people actually think they are cool when they do this?
Eh, looks boring but I guess whatever is enjoyable to some.
