Fix'd. or from what I read.
Doom is the FPS that shaped all FPS games.
Starcraft for RTS.
Doom definitely popularized deathmatch, considering it was the first one to even use the name.

Ninjas afoot tonight.
Fix'd. or from what I read.
Changed it a bit.
Age of Empires.
You know why.
Was GTA3 the first 3D free-roam game? If so then that for pretty much creating free roaming.
'Brought x genre to publicity' sounds like shit, use the phrase 'Publicized x genre' so I can take you more seriously. Or you could replace 'Publicized' with 'Popularized', whatever floats your boat.

Suggestion:
Dune - Started the whole RTS genre.
OP, Metal Gear did, not Metal Gear Solid. Woohoo for nitpicking.
Halo.
Don't lie to yourself. Games these days would be so much different if it weren't for Halo.

What did Halo ever do to help games?
It just made them easier.

Then GTA3 for perfecting it.
HL's real innovation was seamless levels, no loading screens but just brief pauses in the gameplay.

Yep, there'd be far less annoying 12 year olds.
But seriously, the whole regenerating health aspect needs a mention, I guess. But that's not really something that's completely changed the face of shooters, so no.
HL's real innovation was seamless levels, no loading screens but just brief pauses in the gameplay.
And being able to tell the story using no cutscenes or pre-written things.

I never said anything about helping. The question was what games from the past shaped games to the way they are today. The answer is Halo.
Oh and Duke 3D added the third axis, allowing you to look up and down as well as from side to side.
(At least I think Duke did that)
Also Half Life's AI is stupid. I don't understand what's so great about its AI.
