You don't need mass effect 1 to enjoy 2
It helps but you can enjoy ME2 without finishing the first

I don't even know the story to ME1 but have 2. It's good fun. You pick up a lot of the story while playing. At least enough to understand what's happened.

It's good fun, I'd recommend it.
