• Lag-like slowdowns in Red Faction: Guerrilla

I asked about this in the Red faction thread but it went mostly unnoticed. First off, specs. Video card: Radeon HD 3870 4 GB of Ram Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ 3.02 GHz I'm getting some lag-like slowdown effects in Red Faction: Guerrilla. It's not like a FPS drop or anything. The whole game slows down and then speeds back up to normal, and this happens about every second, maybe even faster. I notice it most while I'm sprinting or driving. Things I've tried: *Setting graphics to low *Changing resolution *Restarting the game *Restarting my computer *Updating my video drivers *downgrading video drivers *windowed mode *forcing vsync *reinstalling the game *starting a new game *There is a patch coming out that will fix performance issues on ATI cards. I'll just wait out this patch and see if that provides any change*
You think that's bad? My game runs 3x faster than it should, yeah, try shooting with that kind of speed.

I get helpful bullet time every time I destroy a building :smug:

All freezes / slowdowns i had in RF:G were fixed by downgrading to the 9.8 catalyst drivers, give them a swirl. Also, try forcing vsync in the catalyst control center

Where can I find vsync in the catalyst control center, I want to try that first.

It' not on the list and it worked for me (As well as others); Run in windowed mode, doubled FPS and stopped freezeups at no cost as you can hide the window borders anyway.
Windowed mode fixes everything.
Graphics control center, go to the tab marked "All" Scroll down, "Wait For Vertical Refresh" drag the slider to the right (Always on)
It was already set to always on. I'll have to try downgrading to 9.8, though not sure what good that will do since I had this problem with 9.5, before I upgraded to 9.9. [editline]10:22PM[/editline] Also windowed mode didn't work either. [editline]11:15PM[/editline] Downgrading didn't work either. Also on the subject of windowed mode, how do you make it so it doesn't go into windowed mode when you hit Caps lock? [editline]11:24PM[/editline] I just noticed that this only happens when I'm moving. Cars driving past me while I'm standing still don't cause it.
Yet another edit. This is starting to become game breaking. I just did a side mission where you ride on the back of a vehicle and shoot at EDF buildings, and It's so hard to friggin' aim with the jerking motion of the car. If anyone could throw out some more ideas I would really appreciate it. Auto-merge?
Try running it in windowed. A well-known game journalist did it, all problems disappeared.
Try running it in windowed. A well-known game journalist did it, all problems disappeared.
Tried it already, didn't work.
Desperation bump for one last chance at fixing this. Here's hoping auto-merge screws up again. Woohoo. Is it set to not merge after so many hours or something?
Automerge won't work after 3 hours last post I think. Now is the time when you should try to reinstall, even if you don't like it.
Automerge won't work after 3 hours last post I think. Now is the time when you should try to reinstall, even if you don't like it.
Reinstalling now. Hope this works, it's my last shot. I don't have my hopes up too high though.
trainer
No, windows 7.
Reinstalling didn't work. I also tried starting a new game to see if my save was corrupt, that wasn't the problem either.

It's not an ATI thing. This may sound wierd, but I had a similar problem in Mini Ninja's and after a little research I found a solution. Go to your device manager and then find the "Human Interface Devices" you probably have a number that say HID something or other. Disable a few of those, as many as you can stand to disable. This worked for me in both games. I narrowed down the problem to the HID controller responsible for the volume control buttons on my keyboard. So now I don't have volume control on my keyboard, but at least the game runs smooth. I have a Saitek Eclipse keyboard and while doing my research it seemed like this may be the cause of the problem. However there were a few others that had the same problem that this worked for as well. Good luck and I hope this does the trick :)

I disabled all of them that gave me the option to do so and even went as far as uninstalling my keyboard software and plugging in my old keyboard (going off what you said about volume controls; my old keyboard didn't have those), and it still didn't change a thing. Thanks for trying anyway. It still must be an ATI problem. The patch that's in the works or the drivers that ATI is working on with Volition may fix it, and if they don't then I'm truly screwed. :(
