What is Armored Core?
Armored Core is a game about Mechs. You get giant robots and you're allowed to customize their parts (Head, torso, boosters, generator, etc.), as well as color them and apply decals. You then go off on various missions (either storyline related or not), to unlock new parts and equipment.

What's something new in the Armored Core?
Ultimate Weapons. They are basically the one-hit-kill-anything weapon in the game. There are 5 different Ultimate Weapons in the game, and they are all pretty bad-ass. There are a lot of new and changed things in this game, so it's worth checking out, especially if you are an Armored Core fan.
Armored Core 5 is much different than the previous Armored Core games. First thing you should notice is the detail. No longer are you playing in desolate wastelands, you now get to traverse through cities and other areas that are filled with stuff to climb on. Another noticeable change are the Mech's size. In the previous Armored Core games, the mechs were 10 meters tall, but in Armored Core 5, they are only 5 meters tall. With that said, Armored Core 5 also has a greater emphasis on stealth. You can slide between buildings and other objects to hide yourself from enemies.
Armored Core 5 seems to rely heavily on it's online aspect. I don't know what it's like to play it offline, but it probably isn't very fun.
Armored Core 5 allows you to team up with a number of players to aid you through various missions, if you need it that is.
You can also battle it out online versus other teams for territory control. Or maybe you just like straight up deathmatch?
Anyway, I don't think I'm doing a great job with this OP, especially since I've only beaten one Armored Core before this...
I am currently on the PS3 and I have made a team called "Facepunch Alpha". If anyone is on the PS3 and sees this team and wants to join it, the password is "oify". I'm not sure how many people can actually be in a team at once, so that's why I called it Facepunch Alpha. I think I read somewhere that there can only be 8 to a team, so if that is the case and more people join then we could start a second group called Facepunch Beta or something, I don't know.

Still need to get to 4/For Answer. Only played the PS1/2 games extensively, playing a little of 4 though.
Ah sweet, I was going to do this eventually. I've only played a bit of 2 but fully finished the 4th gen of games.
I'll be getting the Xbox Verson on Saturday (Hopefully friday)
I think this needs a small faq and maybe a few details about the other games. But thats just me.
(I dont know how this will fare here in Facepunch, but considering how well the Souls game was handleed here, this should hopefully work)
Yeah, the only real reason I started this thread was to see if we could get a Facepunch group going or something.
Would make missions much more fun than playing solo.
Picked this up today on PS3, sadly I haven't been able to connect to the servers yet so I don't know what online is like. Only done about 8 or so levels and its good so far but the levels feel too repetitive, particularly the Order missions, compared to 4A. Alongside that I wished SP had been fleshed out abit more, it just feels like so much is missing if you're not playing online.
Well, my games been dispatched for friday. Awesome.
Hopefully this game will get more populated come friday... although chances are i'll get stuck making my emblems for the next week.
Is there a PC alternative with the up to the same standard as this game? Loved "For Answer", but then my console broke.
I want this so fucking bad
I'm a massive sucker for mechs, I'm going to buy it on 360

I remember playing Armored Core 3. Very fun game, have quite a few memories of it.
How is V by the way? I was considering getting it.
I'm a bit disappointed that it's more similar to Chromehounds than AC4A, but I'm still going to buy it.

Isnt that more of a good thing though? AC4A felt way too fast when your trying to play it online.
I heard loads of good stories about Chromehounds.
From my experience and as an AC fan, V isn't really... Armored Core. Boosting feels awkward now, if there's an ability to fly around with it rather than a gimpy jump, I've completely missed it. They've added a whole new side to armor for no real reason, so now you have to worry about KE, CE and TE armor values over just Ballistic and Energy. Visually, it's too overloaded and the simplified hud is hard for me to read on my TV. As for the missions, I've only done an handful and they have yet to really hit home with me yet.
On the flip side, there's a lot more choice with weapons and they deck you out with a starter piece of everything - so you can make some cool combos right off the bat. The audio is stunning and weapons actually sound pretty fucking scary now. Money flow is nice, and it's not as difficult to get up and get going as say, Armored Core 3 was. I still wish they'd bring back an Arena, but that's just me.
It just feels like a huge leap and I'm not really sure if I like it yet.

I liked 4A because it was fast. I really liked how movement focused it seemed to be. I never really got into Chromehounds.
Thats the odd thing with FA, There are times where it was good fast, and then there was times when it was too fast.
The only times it felt "too" fast was online, and that was when you where playing agaisnt someone who keeps playing it and knows what he's doing. Dashing and Flying around the place like he's piloting Jehuty more than anything else. Awesome to watch when two of those kind of players go at it, but fighting agaisnt them when you have no idea what they are really doing and how to replicate it (i think its second stage boosting?) is a whole different story. Its like playing Quake with Pro's basicly, its never fun getting constantly stomped by them. I would had perfered being able to play with people of my level.
The new boosting system takes a little while to get used to but im starting to like it.
playing from australia team next.
One thing I do hope for is that people won't go for "one build".
It seems like everyone in For Answer went with one kind of build, and that was so they could go super fast to the point where they teleported across maps.
I really hope to see some diversity this time around.
I am also trying to get a nice Tank built, but it's quite hard...

Don't even try to make a slow-ish build. People will still go the old route for making the fastest possible, which are still probably OP as fuck
I had a tank build in For Answer.
I had missiles equiped to everything. All I had to do was press every button at once and a barrage of missiles would fly everywhere.
It may not be the best, but it's one of those things that make you go "shitshitshit"
Aw it's console exclusive. :(
Maybe I haven't unlocked the parts yet, but do they not have the cannon arms anymore?
no
I am so very excited for this game. I absolutely LOVED For Answer
I had a tank build in FA which worked out pretty good on the Single Player against Arms Forts. Lots of Grenade Launchers and Heavy everything.
I don't know if it was me or not, but if you used a tank lower and parts which were low on energy usage you could basically fly and boost at the same time for aaaages. Infact this was the build I had when I went to fight the Answerer. Because it was just *~impossible~* to fight that thing from the ground.
Though online, yeah, everyone has INSANELY fast mech builds. Which are annoying but oh so satisfying to one shot.
[editline]23rd March 2012[/editline]
I hope they bring back the Arms Forts because those were so much fun to fight.
Should I pick up 4 and FA first? Played a few on the PS2, the PSP one and the original. Fuck SL was fun though.
So, is there an alternative for the PC? It was asked before.

I could be wrong, but aside from emulation I don't think there are many 'fast mecha' type games on the PC at all. Most are realistic, like Mechwarrior, and that upcoming Hawken game.

What about Front Mission? There's one on steam, not sure if it's a "fast mech" type, haven't played it before.

Armored Core 4 from what I heard, sucked.
I picked up FA having never played any of them before and LOVED IT. Just get FA, it's really fun.
I'll also want to let any new players aware about one thing, it's VERY Japanese in its setup and over all menu style. There is no way you can change the controls mid game. Oh and no ammo pick ups. Once you're out, YOU'RE OUT.
And another thing I cannot emphasize enough, the game reveals much more on the 2nd and 3rd playthroughs. DO DIFFERENT MISSIONS on each playthrough.
For those of you who have FA
[sp]I've never been able to beat that mission where you're teamed up with Old King and you have to quite literally fight every other NEXT in the league. Any tips?
I found the mission where you're with him and start shooting down the Cradles to be really unsettling.[/sp]
Trying to figure out a good heavy tank build, right now I'm running with plasma cannon and a KE cannon as well as those autonomous shoulder missiles.
To me AC4 was my favorite by far. I liked the speed of it.
What's the framerate like on AC5? Is it still 60 like in 4? Or has From Software screwed up like Blighttown again
