Ever wonder why you can't see your reflection on water in HL2? Also why Valve never added a single mirror into the game.
It's hard to do.
Even in mods, mirrors are usually just windows into an identical room.
Because your player model isn't rendered in first person...simple as that ?
It's different in L4D though, as you can see your character from what I remember... Though, consoles sucked big time and it was cut in L4D2.
Oh, let's not forget the Portal, it's rendering the player model.
And last thing, there was no official Gordon Freeman model made by Valve in HL2, as far as I remember, so you wouldn't even want to see yourself in the mirror in first place, with that "dev doll".
Deus Ex and Duke Nukem 3D featured working mirrors.
I think this was actually to help immersion, Valve wanted you to feel like you were the Freeman or something along those lines.
It's because (for whatever reason) valve doesn't draw your player model in 1st person. So there is nothing to be reflected.

Yeah if you're in 2001.
HL2 does mirrors fine and without much lag.
