Is it possible to look at a world map on a multiplayer server?

If it's somebody else's server, clinetside minimap mods can show you a lot, I like

To see other players and mobs show up as blimps

Dynmap is a serverside plugin for bukkit, unless you own the server it's useless for you.
Otherwise just follow the installation instructions for it, it's pretty easy to setup.

Not sure if it still works, but there's been mods which allow you to download the server map in parts. The downloaded map could be then used to generate a map.

Regenerating worlds like that doesn't work anymore since the servers don't send world seeds to clients anymore (because people did that). If you use that method and regenerate from the files it gives you, you'll get different chunks than the server would generate.

Unless you have the world files from the server, you won't be able to view it like that. Not completely, anyway.

World Downloader doesn't do that. It downloads every visible block around around you and then some(i.e. underground or just a bit in the distance) and as you walk around you download more as you see more. It also includes the stuff built on the server(sort of the point) instead of merely from a seed.

Well, yeah, but you can't get any more world than you've already explored. If that's fine with you, go ahead, but there's no way to get it to generate more of that world unless someone who can retrieve the seed gives it to you.

If its your own server, you can just download the world files through FTP and look at it in whatever program youd usually use

I always thought you needed the file to get a good look at the world map.
