Dynamap does what you need.
If it's somebody else's server, clinetside minimap mods can show you a lot, I like To see other players and mobs show up as blimps http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/240772-v125-cjb-mods-v611-08-05-2012-test-build/ Slightly nicer but can't see players/mobs as blimps http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/482147-125-jun23-reis-minimap-v32-04/

ya I don't own the server, I just wanted to know if I could see the server I'm on, like that.
Not sure if it still works, but there's been mods which allow you to download the server map in parts. The downloaded map could be then used to generate a map. http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/333322-world-downloader/
I use Rei's minimap

If you use that method and regenerate from the files it gives you, you'll get different chunks than the server would generate. Unless you have the world files from the server, you won't be able to view it like that. Not completely, anyway.
World Downloader doesn't do that. It downloads every visible block around around you and then some(i.e. underground or just a bit in the distance) and as you walk around you download more as you see more. It also includes the stuff built on the server(sort of the point) instead of merely from a seed.

If that's fine with you, go ahead, but there's no way to get it to generate more of that world unless someone who can retrieve the seed gives it to you.
If its your own server, you can just download the world files through FTP and look at it in whatever program youd usually use
I always thought you needed the file to get a good look at the world map.
