• What's so advanced about Source AI?
Source’s updated animation system brings expressive characters to life with an unlimited palette of facial expressions that allow them to convey a message without having to say a word. These characters possess the industry’s most advanced artificial intelligence, making them extremely capable allies and foes.
I never really noticed any advanced behaviours by enemies in Episode Two. The hunters were pretty cunning sometimes, but I see no evidence for this being the industry's most advanced AI. Source. (lol)
You have to admit though, the facial expressions are some of the best you can see in a game.
You have to admit though, the facial expressions are some of the best you can see in a game.
Brace for ticks.
Don't expect the AI to suddenly behave human-like. You have to have some grounds to compare how Source's AI performs against other AI's. As far as I know combine soldiers look like MENSA members when you take the retardness of Crysis' soldiers.
I still say Half-Life 1's grunts were the best except for when they dropped a grenade on the floor
And this has to do with AI how?
The facial expressions changing in different situations is a form of Artificial Intelligence.
What about the director in l4d/2?

TF2 has some very good AI actually
TF2 AI=Survivor AI
TF2 has some very good AI actually
Do the spies work properly yet?
Do the spies work properly yet?
You have any idea how difficult it would be to code an AI spy? Play against any AI long enough and you see patterns, in which case enemy spies will just become ridiculously easy kills. That's without considering all the unique situations that only happen to a spy you have to handle. They basically have to code a complete new bot JUST for the spy. [editline]10:43PM[/editline]
I still say Half-Life 1's grunts were the best except for when they dropped a grenade on the floor
They do that when they're badly injured and you are quite close to them. They're trying to take you with them. Just because you can't see their strategy behind it, and can react quickly enough when they attempt, doesn't make the action stupid. Source. (lol)
The problem is the Combine Soldiers tend to react a little too slowly and get killed too quickly. Try doing the hotel ambush on hard, stay in a room with multiple entrances, and watch how 2 squads will rush the room you are in, coordinated to flank you. Don't just judge them on reaction times, those are scaled back to give the player a chance. Look for the tactics behind their movements.
I can see how hard it would be to code the Spy, but why isn't the Scout coded yet?
Double jump
Double jump
He could at least be allowed to spawn on his own.
Yeah, I imagine getting nav_generate to properly handle double jump situations for the scout without messing up paths for the rest of them is challenging. I also imagine when they do it though, it'll also open up rocketjump/stickyjump paths as well.

But I have a config and it messes with the AI so that might have something to do with it.
L4D 1 & 2 AI are leaps and bounds ahead of their times if you know much about programming and pathing.
Anyone who ever spawned a Hunter in G-mod knows that the bastards are actually damned smart - they just need time to fully asses the situation.
What about the director in l4d/2?
That uses Havok AI.
Never say HL2's AI is fancy. A paint can can fool it.
They are a lot more helpful I mean take MW2 for example, you have teammates, but they don't do anything. ANYTHING. This AI at least has the people firing at other people. They can also HIT and KILL others.
Ignore L4D2 bots and yes, the Source AI is good.
L4D1's AI was pretty good.
I would like to see some non-scripted NPCs form their own squads in HL2.
The L4D bots are of course going to be bad though, it would be near impossible, at least with our level of technology and computing power, to make an AI that can adapt to new situations and react properly as a real player would, our brains are, after all, the most powerful computer known to man, an AI can't match that no matter how hard you try.
Remember there's 3 types of AI in L4D - survivor, common, and specials. While we all know the survivor AI isn't the best (though certain problems with them can be attributed to dumbing them down - they could very well make the game far too easy if they had perfect reaction times and aim ability, and prioritised SI) The work that went into the common infected is impressive, and the specials tend to use their respective advantages quite well. If you were to ask me what I think has the worst AI, I would say the Tank. It's basically just the HL2 zombie AI, tweaked slightly.
