Can I use a hard copy cd key to download through Steam?

Hi, I was looking into getting the Orange Box, but I don't feel like getting a $50 Visa Gift Card and prepaid debit cards are money scams. So, I want to buy the game from GameStop or Walmart. My question is:

Could I use a hard copy's cd key to download through Steam?

The main reason I want it through Steam is for Garry's Mod content.

Yes, just download all of the files off of the CD's and use the key, or you can use the key by going to My Games, then clicking on Activate a product on Steam.

As long as you buy the PC version, yes. Once you apply a CD key to Steam, the game(s) are connected to your Steam account, not the disc. The code at that point is unusable, and the discs just supply another way of installing the games.

Once the games appear in your Steam "Games" tab, their content will appear in GMod.
