Advance Wars - "Where the hell is that artillery?"

Advance Wars is a turn based strategy game that originally started in Japan as Famicom Wars. This was only released in japan and was popular. Then Nintendo made the Gameboy Wars that still only came out in japan. Soon the Gameboy Advance came out and Advance Wars was made.

This was the first wars game to come out officially to Europe and the US in 2001-2002. The story is about the orange star nation is finding out why all the other nations are battling each other.

game play
The objective is to defeat the enemy army. There are two ways to defeat an opponent: destroy every one of his units on the map or capture his headquarters. However, some maps have specific objectives, such as capturing a certain number of cities to claim victory. The available modes of play include a campaign mode which carries the game's storyline, the "war room" which is a collection of maps on which the player strives for high scores, as well as multiplayer modes and a map design mode.
Battle System
The battles of Advance Wars are turn-based in nature. Two to four armies, each headed by a commanding officer, take turns building and commanding units on grid-based maps.
All units are limited in the types of units they can attack. What dictates a unit’s ability to attack different targets are its primary and secondary weapons. For example, the Mech unit has a bazooka that can only be fired at land vehicles, but are more powerful for that purpose than their secondary weapons, machine guns, which Mechs can use against other Mechs, Infantry, and helicopters.
The amount of damage done to the enemy in combat is proportional to the number of hit points the attacker has. The majority of the weapons have a limited supply of ammunition. Units with secondary weapons will resort to these when their primary weapon's ammunition runs out.
Terrain
The terrain on a map affects unit movement, vision, and the defense attribute of units stationed in the terrain. Weather conditions can also affect vision and movement of ground units. Fog of war may also be enabled, whereby a player's vision depends on the individual units' lines of sight, which varies from unit to unit.
Units
There are 18 different types of military units in Advance Wars. Each unit has a set amount of attack power, vision range in Fog of war, movement range and type, and fuel supply, and some units have two weapons which can be used against different types of enemy units. There are both direct and indirect attack units, as well as transport units. All of the units are either infantry, vehicles, ships or air units. Units have specific strengths and weaknesses.
Multiplayer
In Multiplayer mode, players can compete against the AI or against other human players. Multiplayer matches feature a variety of settings that can be changed pre-battle. Multiplayer comes in two forms: Versus mode and Link mode. In Versus mode, only one GBA system is used, which every participant in the game uses. One person will take their turn, then pass the system to the next person. Link mode is the same game as Versus mode gameplay-wise, but multiple consoles are used, one for each person. It can be played with just one game pak or with one game pak per player.
Commanding officers
Armies are led by Commanding Officers (COs) who control units. All COs except Andy provide units with special advantages and/or disadvantages, such as extra firepower or a shorter unit range. COs also have a Power Meter which fills up by defeating enemy units or when on the receiving end of a brutal offensive attack. When the meter is full, a CO can unleash his or her CO Power, which gives a temporary positive effect to friendly units and/or a negative effect to enemy units. For example, Nell gives a Critical Strike bonus, Olaf makes it snow, disadvantaging his opponent, and Hachi lowers the price of manufacturing new units.

This continues through out with all the advance wars.

Nearly the same as the last one, but with more content and a new story.
The story this time is that the Black Hole army [sp]who caused the wars in the first one[/sp] has risen again and is trying to take over the other nations while making a secret weapon.

Advance Wars: Dual Strike

Dual Strike came out for the DS and was almost the same again, but with even more content. The main difference with Dual strike is the Double CO mode, and the Dual front mode. Double commanders let you partner up commanders even from different nations to do a Dual Strike power that is much more powerful if the COs are compatible, and can cover the weakness of one CO. The dual front mode lets you see two battles, one on the top screen, and one on the bottom. Front one is your main one. Here you can send units purchased in here to be transported to front two. Units from Front two can not be transported back.
The story is that Black Hole has a new leader, and something sinister is happening to Omega land.

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin \ Dark Conflict

This also came out for the DS , but it took a much darker tone compared to the other advance wars. The plot was that 90% of humanity has been wiped out from a massive meteor strike causing a huge dust cloud to block out the skies, and all that is left is survivors and two war nations that still attack each other even though the circumstances. It starts with a boy named will climbing his way out of a mess hall and is saved from raiders by meeting a military group called Brenner's Wolves.
This game got rid of the double front and COs, and replaced it with new environments.

Loved these games, and Battalion Wars. Also I think I speak for everyone when I say I kept making horribly unbalanced maps in the map editors where I brutally destroyed the enemy each time
This is probably the only tbs game series I don't hate.

Well you do speak for me.

two years ago my friend made a map with 4 islands with 4 bridges making a box. he set it to 9000 resources per city and we had a 4 player game on it. till this day, no one has won on it.
I remember playing the original Advance wars on my friend's GBA back in the day. I would still buy it today, if I could find it somewhere :smith:
Damnit Days of Ruin... Way to screw up the unique art style that was half the point of the game. Dual Strike though? Fuckin' A.
I actually remember when I was 8, being pissed off going to gamestop/eb games they didn't have this game on the release date.
Fucking 9/11.
Favorite strategy series on handheld by far.

I like the change in style...although the cheesy line writing was....full of stuff to...

Combined with this:

Means you win by HQ capture in one turn.
(also, handy link to character themes. There's too many to list so just pick one of the first two and look at related)
whenever i go on vacation, i bring the good old DSL with dual strike on it. its really nice going back to it after playing hours and hours of FPS games and fallouts and all that jazz.
i do suck at the game though, i can barely win half the games in the war room and i ragequit the campaign after a cousin deleted all my progress. eagle is my favorite character, his super co power is very usefull.
Was fun to play back in the day.
Any news if theres going to be another Advance Wars? Thats pretty much the only DS game's ive played longer than just a few hours and get bored of it.
Ive only played the first one, but loved it thoroughly.

3DS says yes

Are the other games alright? I've only ever palyed the first two.

dual strike is the best one. the only thing that made me mad was the mission where you have a time limit and have to capture these missiles silos before they can call in a large satellite to crash. It is still the best.
I love this game so much, when it came out I played all night without breaks.
Today I still play it when I'm on the toilet taking a huge shit.
now that I think about it, it would be awesome to have an sequel with the 3DS. Like a hologram battle map and 3D battles.
Days of ruin is my favorite DS game of all time. I poured a retarded amount of hours into these games. For dual strike, I systematically remade every single map without a game breaking object (like a laser) and tested little changes that would make it harder.
I love this series to death, even as someone who kind of hates strategy games. I feel that Days of Ruin definitely had the best gameplay, but they fucked up the wonderful style.
I remember my brother bought the thing that let the gamecube play GBA games, and we played Advanced wars on our wide screen TV.
I love this game so much. I normally play as Jess as she has land vehicle strength with no infantry penalty.
