Penumbra Overture
Penumbra: Overture is a first person survival horror game. It is the first part of their Penumbra series developed by Frictional Games, which are the same developers of Amnesia: The Dark Descend. The last part was supposed to be Penumbra: Black Plague, but the developers created an expansion Penumbra: Requiem, which doesn't continue the story in any way. Overture was also released in the "Humble Indie Bundle"
Gameplay
Although Frictional Games describe Penumbra as a First-Person Adventure game, it's actually a mix of Horror, Shooter and Puzzle type which include physics-based puzzles and physics-based combat. There are no firearms in the game, so during combat the player is limited to improvised melee fighting with a hammer or pickaxe, or throwing objects at attacking creatures. The game is designed to emphasize stealth and avoidance over direct conflict.
Story
Penumbra is set in the year 2000 which follows the story of Philip, a thirty-year-old physicist whose mother recently died. After receiving a mysterious letter from his supposedly dead father, Philip follows a series of clues that lead to him to a mysterious location in uninhabited northern Greenland. The harsh cold forces him to take shelter in an abandoned mine. Unfortunately, the mine's entrance collapses as he enters it, and he is forced to move deeper inside. Within the mine, Philip discovers diary extracts written by a scientist of some sort, who was alone and gradually resorted to eating cave-dwelling spiders as an alternative food source as his supplies diminished.
The unknown person also describes discovering a psychoactive toxin in the spiders and deduced that, after eight months of consuming them in the mine, it was beginning to have an effect on him, physically. Philip also begins receiving radio messages from Tom "Red" Redwood, a man driven insane by cabin fever. Red promises that if he is found, he will give Philip answers. The game follows Philip as he descends deeper into the mines in search of Red while unravelling the secrets of the mine's previous and current inhabitants.

The game is really interesting, and kinda creepy. Totally worth the money. It's only :10bux: on Steam.
I fucking hate spiders. Damn this arachnophobia. I got this with the humble indie bundle and i didn't get so far. Them caves man.
The spiders aren't scary to me. They're just annoying as fuck and hard to kill.
Black Plague was much scarier, but this wasn't too bad, especially not with the Novint Falcon :3:
Got it with indie bundle :buddy:
Overture pales in comparison to it's sequel Black Plague.
If you liked Overture you should buy that too, it's 10x more scary.
I actually had all the games before the indie bundle... and when I got the indie bundle for $0.10 (Im a heartless bastard, I know) I felt TOTALLY RIPPED OFF!
Garry should add a banner to the top of every new user's page that tells them to use search before making threads in a explicit manner.
For some reasons I prefer penumbra overture and black plague to amnesia.
Oh and yeah, http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1000874-Frictional-Games I know it's a big forgotten but really, use this, don't make a whole thread for this game.

I liked the theme more. Felt like The Thing + Lovecraft.
got in the bundle
I'm terrible at horror games
can somebody tell me when you first see an enemy that can hurt you

You first see one of those zombie dogs, in the beginning, after leaving Storage. But it goes away if you crouch. The first one that attacks is when you get to the same map place, which is locked, in the place where there are explosives, the dog breaks the door.
I also liked Penumbra more than Amnesia, that beginning scene in Overture is still stuck in my head, I thought it was just so iconic. In Amnesia I honestly wished you could kill the enemies, they weren't scary for me, just annoying and ruined the whole exploration and story because they took you out and outran you so easily.
I know lots of people complain about the dogs in this game, but they are so easy to kill.
1. Throw an medium to large object (there are plenty of rocks and cannisters. Use them).
2. Crouch near the body, ready to attack (a swing is easier than a stab) -- Pickaxe recommended, but a hammer is fine too.
3. WAIL ON THAT FUCKER EVERYTIME HE TRIES TO GET UP (he's literally invincible when he's on the ground, so don't bother).
:smug:
Never completed it.
Got kind of stupid when i just smashed every enemy's face with that hammer.

You only encounter one enemy before you get the pickaxe.
I've played this game once, I should play it some more but Its so goddamn scary.
Penumbra has kind of a more awesome story twist and theme than Amnesia but Amnesia kept me scared and nervous (and addicted) throughout the whole game were the Penumbra games weren't as scary when you had played somewhat far. Just my experience.
I got stuck at the second cave, where you have to decode some morse code to get a number that opens a gate.
Or at least that's what I thought I had to do.
I found it had a scary atmosphere, but the control system grated on me.
i felt like a total badass after solving the morse code part.
The ending really caught me by surprise.
I liked Overture the best out of the trilogy. Black Plague was kinda meh'd out. Requiem was just useless. I luckily found all three of them in a collection at Gamestop for $10. I didn't have to think twice about buying the pack.
I used to have this series for my Novint Falcon but I had to start fresh on my computer a while ago so I don't know if I have the keys or if I just need to go on my other account for it (which I don't remember the user and password and such),every once in a while I still want to play them, bad :sigh:
I was really surprised how Black Plague was more scarier than Overture.
[sp]I miss Red. I couldn't stand incinerating him, and afterwards hearing him pound on the walls of the incinerator, begging you to turn it off. He was your only friend.[/sp]

Also, in Black Plague, I named the Tuurngait victims Ralph. Whenever they'd chase me I'd say, "RALPPPH! I THOUGHT WE WERE FRIENDS! GODDAMN IT RALPH PUT SOME PANTS ON!"
