It's 11:51. It's okay, I guess.
Beyond Black Mesa is a short independent fan film Inspired by the Half-Life video game series. This is an action packed short film centering around Adrian Shephard and a band of resistance fighters struggling to get out a warning about the impending invasion. - Independent short film - 2 years in the making - Endless hours of post - 1 Canon HV20 - 7 Friends - $1,200 budget for the full short film. This film is not HL,HL2 or Opposing Forces. It's a short fan film that takes place in the Half-Life world. Also, as a completely independent film, we wanted to have a creative voice in the movie and make it a movie that we would enjoy shooting. We took artistic freedoms and liberties, unfortunately most of those decisions were determined by our limited resources. Interesting that they spent 2 years for 11 minutes and 51 seconds. Pretty cool anyways I guess, especially for such a small budget AND an independent film.

THAT'S STUPID AS FUCK!
That was the best 11:51 minutes of my life.
Awesome.
Arrgh the ending So many inaccuracies arrgh I'm going to put that off as something that happens on low budget movies, though.
Thats no HL!
Ninja Combine? :raise:
Filming and acting was amazing, but story was a bit rushed and weird. Thought it pretty ridiculous when that combine suddenly had a sword and they both knew Kung Fu and shit, and I'm having trouble figuring out how he so quickly merged in with the troops that captured the chick without being noticed. Also kinda neutral on how they deviated from the normal Half life lore with the zombies. But otherwise it was incredibly good, and they should do more.
Imo, it sucked. Headcrab-less zombies, Ninja Combines with Melees. Its more like a crossover with L4D and a Ninja movie.
Damn, that was great but weird
Could have at least made it 12.
That was the best 11:51 minutes of my life.
Wow, your life must really suck then.
It was good but then there was weaboo.
I liked it, I think the part with the Ninja combine was supposed to be cheesy. It was entertaining, would watch a part two but they kind of just killed every main character so not sure how thats gonna work out.
You guys are being harsh because it's not exactly like the HL2 you know and love, but keep in mind they didn't have much to work with. Headcrabs would have just looked dumb honestly, it's better this way. Voice acting sucked... Few artistic faux-pas here and there, such as the constant use of blood-splatter on the camera lens. Also the pacing of the story felt off, I didn't like it at all. However the fight choreography and the cinematography were both amazing, acting wasn't half bad, and post processing was beautiful (except for the blood splatter of course). Overall, this was a pretty great film and I'm looking forward to what else they put out.
L4D crossover wit those zombies.
I have to admit, I LOVED the part with the crowbar, especially when he smashes it into the combine's head.
i lol'd when the fat kid got killed
It was definitely an above average flick and I certainly enjoyed it, though there are a few problems here and there. I'm starting to think like a media student, so I'mma cut it short and say that was the most awesome thing I've seen all day.
There is functionally no way to make a more awesome Half-Life-based movie than by having Adrian Shephard escape from CPs and Common Infected, team up with Zoey, and sword-fight a Combine Soldier using a crowbar. Functionally. No. Way. Well, maybe if they replaced the Combine Soldier with a Combine Assassin, and included a Tank or Spy somewhere.
heee when they were dragging her and it was all blurry and stuff she didn't look like she had no pants on hee
Needed ninja zombine.
I only wish the CPs looked a bit more like they do ingame, but that's just about it.
It was good but then there was weaboo.
I would like to ask you sir, do you know the definition of the word, weaboo?
It was awesome except for the stupid part with the SAMURAI COMBINE SWORDFIGHT BACKFLIP "FUCK THIS CROWBAR I'LL BREAK YOUR LEGS"
Eh, that was pretty good. Some nice use of special effects and what not. I didn't like how there was only narration and no one actually talked. And the super ninja combine was a serious WTF for me. In a good way.
In all honesty, it was both brilliant, and, well, not too good. The main detractor was that lack of coherence. All in all, it was a lot of brilliant scenes, stitched together really badly. The lack of voices and general hint of sillyness about the whole thing was what stopped this being Escape from City 17. The latter was improv'd and wasn't flashy. As a result it felt far more realistic. In short, I think it's very good. But it's a little self-indulgent, as cmanatlan pointed out (namely the gratuitous blood splatters).
The HL universe feels dragged in so they could lift on the fan base. The inaccuracies in both the story, zombies and fighting makes it feel like they didn't bother studying the HL universe, but rather just an action flick with HL slapped on it. I know taking artistic liberties is fun and all, but you could just as well pick your own plot and universe instead. As for the actual quality, I guess the effects are pretty good. Story felt a bit lousy (ending was unnecessary) and they seem to have trouble keeping the cam steady.
Would be much better if it was centered around the L4D universe.
