Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds is a real-time strategy game developed by Rage Software Limited and published by GT Interactive in 1998 for the PC. It is based on Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds — which is itself based on H. G. Wells' novel The War of the Worlds.
The player chooses to play as either the defending Humans or the invading Martians. It was unusual at the time, as instead of having pre-set missions, battles only take place when one sides' forces are sent to a sector occupied by the other. Unit building and the inter-sector movement of forces is done between battles. In this respect, it is somewhat similar to the computer game North & South.
The game is set in Great Britain and starts in the late 19th century. The map of Britain (the "War map") is divided into approximately 30 sectors. Each sector held by the players forces can be examined in detail in a separate "Battle map". The player can set up unit and structure building tasks and queues here. Time only passes on the War map. Research tasks are set on the War map as well.
Unlike most RTS computer games, units typically consist of multiple vehicles, except for highly specialised or utility units. The Martians use large vehicles with powerful weapons, which can take a lot of damage. The Humans have smaller, weaker vehicles, but have more per unit, and quicker build times. The humans rely mostly on mobile artillery, WWI-style tanks, and ironclad warships. Playing on the Martian side, players can expect to be attacked by more than a hundred human vehicles in a single battle, on some occasions. The Humans can build water units, such as Ironclads, which can devastate Martian defences, while requiring the Martian ground forces to wade out into the ocean to retaliate. The Martians can build a number of extremely specialised vehicles, varying from the Mind-reading and -manipulating Xeno-Telepath, to the Tempest, an extremely powerful machine that carries two heavy Heat-Rays and black smoke canister launcher.
Resource usage is different from the trend of the time. There are no gathering units that manually gather resources, and the resources are not used to build or purchase units. Instead, each sector has three resources (steel, oil and coal for the Humans and heavy elements, copper and Human blood for the Martians), in certain levels of abundance. Players can build facilities that will extract these resources at a certain rate. Each unit and manufacturing or repair facility in the game uses certain amounts of the resources depending on the resource type (Martian buildings don't need to feed on human blood, for example, while units do), and the action currently being performed. These resources are drawn from the sector the building or unit is in, and the sectors directly surrounding it. Deficiencies in resources will result in decreased efficiency, and increased time for unit/structure building and repairs.
I know this is old and i know lots of people probably hate wotw but has anybody else played this? i've just tracked down a copy and i must say it is fucking fun, good timewaster.
Woah, that looks incredibly good for a '98 game. Never had the chance to play it tough.
I played this. Was pretty cool. To be honest through, i barely remember anything about it at all.
I remember another alien based game i played around the same time period i think, but i don't remember the name, and its impossible to track down :( Was also an RTS, and may also have been WotW.
Oh god.
I remember this.
Reinstalling now.
I have the original musical on my iPod. it's such an epic musical.
EDIT: why the fuck was I rated dumb? it's a great musical!
Argh, can't find my old discs.
Hah, me and my brother were talking about this just the other day and decided to find the discs again. It's a fucking awesome game, I like how the Martians have the initial advantage but if you let the game go on long enough, the humans will get a lot stronger.
Oh, and the music, the music was bloody fantastic. I have Jeff Wayne's original WOTW album, but I really like the remixes in this.
Good to see this didn't start in a flame war like all my other threads about wotw,
Also can someone give me advice on my current martian game? i'm confined to about 3 sectors and moving forward just gets even tempests turned to rubble

Time to play humans for a bit i think.
HOLYSHIT i have this also(it was hard do find a copy that was not 60 pounds or more)
This game is awsome
Yeah i ended up having to search through charity shops and the like for about a year
I found a copy of it at my Grandma´s a few weeks ago.
Does this game have the Jeff Wayne soundtrack included?

Jeff Wayne himself produced the musical arrangements for the game, consisting of 45 minutes of material from Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds re-scored and remixed in a newer electronica style with techno beats. The games menu features a music player.

Looks like an interesting game, graphics remind me of the old Bullfrog games,
Musical... War of the Worlds? Is that a joke?
Having read the book, it doesn't seem like a story that would lend itself to song and dance.

I've got the musical version sitting right here on my desk. It's awesome.

It's not song and dance, rather not a musical but rather a Musical interpretation, here's a sample:

In that case, I'll go looking around for it. Very interesting.
Ooh, the Jeff Wayne musical is awesome, PostmanX3, I definitely recommend it :D
I have that game, I fucking love it, Ships are fucking epic in this game.
Wow, despite being puny the human weaponry is way too overpowered with way too long a range to be actually fair
Bumping this because this game is fucking awesome. I wasted hours on it this morning building tempests.

That + this game is underrated. severely.
I loved this game, shame its not freeware :crying: I lost my copy...

Also the game remixes were fucking sweet!
This game is fucking hard as the Humans. It kicked your ass, but man it was such a good game.

Hard as humans? You gotta be joking, if you managed to reinforce your frontlines and then build a whole fucking load of tanks you could steamroll the Martians, because of that, I tweaked the registry of JW's WotW to make the Martians more powerful and have the Tempest in like 2 weeks of ingame time, a good challenge it was...

I'm 1000 ingame days in and have only just produced 4 tempests and barely was able to take down one sector.

Bloody humans invading my sectors, MARTIAN RIGHTS NOW!
[editline]02:43PM[/editline]
Humans. Coming into our sectors. Taking our Communication Centers.

Martians are harder, because the requirements for their units are much, much, much higher than the Humans' units, best thing to do is to make fighting machines early in the game, research the general shared unit improvements and then try to take over areas and make loads of resource mines and blood farms.
It has been a while since I played the game, but I remember the game just being hard in general. Martian resources were hard to get, but Humans were hard to fight as.
